कल्पकालं भवेत्स्वर्गं नृपो वा कौ महाधनी। प्रतिजन्म लभेतैष सुपत्नीं वरवर्णिनीम्१०० 1.52.
For a kalpa's duration, he attains heaven, or he may become a king or a great wealthy man; in every birth, he obtains a virtuous, beautiful wife.
य इदं शृणुयान्नित्यं पुण्याख्यानमनुत्तमम्। सर्वपापक्षयस्तस्य सर्वशास्त्रार्थपारगः
Whoever hears this most excellent, holy account daily, all his sins are destroyed, and he masters the meaning of all the scriptures.
लभेत सोऽक्षयं स्वर्गं नारीणां वल्लभो भवेत्। क्षत्रियो विजयी चाथ लोकनाथो भवेद्ध्रुवम्
He attains inexhaustible heaven and becomes beloved of women; a Kshatriya becomes victorious and certainly the lord of the people.
श्रुतं हरति पापानि जन्मजन्मकृतानि च। सौभाग्यं लभते लोके तथैव च वरांगना
Hearing this destroys sins committed over many births; one attains good fortune in this world, as does a noble woman.
द्विज उवाच- तुलाधारस्य चरितं प्रभावमतुलं प्रभो। वक्तुमर्हस्यशेषेण यदि मय्यस्त्यनुग्रहः
The twice-born said: O Lord, you ought to tell, in full, the deeds and incomparable power of Tuladhara, if you have favor towards me.
श्रीभगवानुवाच - सत्यभावादलोभाच्च दद्याद्यो वै त्वमत्सरात्। नित्यं यज्ञशतं तस्य सुनिष्पन्नं सुदक्षिणम्
The Blessed Lord said: Whoever gives with truthfulness, without greed, and free from envy— for him, it is as if a hundred sacrifices with excellent gifts are always perfectly accomplished.
सत्येनोदयते सूरो वाति वातस्तथैव च। न लंघयेत्समुद्रस्तु वेलां कूर्मो धरां तथा
By truth the sun rises, the wind blows likewise; the ocean does not transgress its shore, nor the tortoise the earth.
सत्येन लोकास्तिष्ठंति सर्वे च वसुधाधराः। सत्याद्भ्रष्टोथ यः सत्वोप्यधोवासी भवेद्ध्रुवम्
By truth all worlds and the earth are upheld; but one who falls from truth, even if virtuous, certainly dwells below.
सत्यवाचिरतोथस्तु सत्यकार्यरतः सदा। सशरीरेण स्वर्लोकमागत्याच्युततां व्रजेत्
One who always speaks truth and is devoted to truthful action, after reaching the heavenly world with his body, attains imperishable status.
सत्येन मुनयः सर्वे मां च गत्वा स्थिरं गताः। सत्याद्युधिष्ठिरो राजा सशरीरो दिवं गतः
By truth all sages, having reached me, have attained a firm state; by truth, King Yudhishthira ascended to heaven with his body.
सर्वशत्रुगणं जित्वा लोको धर्मेण पालितः। अकरोच्च मखं शुद्धं राजसूयं सुदुर्लभम्
Having conquered all enemies, he ruled the world with righteousness and performed the pure and most difficult Rajasuya sacrifice.
चतुरशीतिसहस्राणि ब्राह्मणानां च नित्यशः। भोजयेद्रुक्मपात्रेषु राजोपकरणेषु च
He would always feed eighty-four thousand Brahmins in golden vessels and with royal utensils.
भोजयित्वोपकरणांस्तेभ्यो दत्वा विसर्जयेत्। यदभीष्टं द्विजातीनामतोन्यद्दापयेद्धनम्
After feeding them and giving gifts of utensils, he would dismiss them; and whatever else the twice-born desired, he would give them wealth.
अदरिद्रं ततो ज्ञात्वा द्विजव्यूहं परित्यजेत्। तथैव स्नातकानां तु सहस्राणि तु षोडश। नित्यं संभोजयेद्राजा सत्येनैव विमत्सरः
Then, seeing the assembly of Brahmins no longer poor, he would let them go; likewise, he would always feed sixteen thousand graduates, the king being truthful and free from envy.
अतिष्ठंत गृहे पूर्वं चिरं तस्य जिगीषया। जितं तेन जगत्सर्वं प्राणानुग्रहकारणात्
They stayed long in his house before, wishing to conquer; by his favor to living beings, he conquered the whole world.
सत्येन चासुरो राजा बलिरिंद्रो भविष्यति। पातालस्थस्य तस्यैव भूयस्तिष्ठामि वेश्मनि
By truth, the Asura king Bali will become Indra; even while he remains in the netherworld, I dwell in his house.
निरंतरं च तिष्ठामि स्वांते पुण्यैककर्मणः। यद्वा पुरा मया बद्धो दैत्ययोनेर्विमोक्षणात्
I dwell continuously in the heart of the one whose only act is merit; or, having once bound him, I released him from the demon birth.
तलं चैवामरत्वं हि शक्रत्वं प्रददाम्यहम्। हरिश्चंद्रो नृपस्सत्यात्सवाहनपरिच्छदः
I grant the netherworld, immortality, and the status of Indra; King Harishchandra, by truth, attained the world of truth with all his retinue.
स्वशरीरेण शुद्धेन सत्यलोके प्रतिष्ठितः। राजानो बहवश्चान्ये ये च सिद्धा महर्षयः
With his pure body, he was established in the world of truth; many other kings, as well as perfected sages, likewise.
ज्ञानिनो यतयश्चैव सर्वे सत्येऽच्युताऽभवन्। तस्मात्सत्यरतो लोके संसारोद्धरणक्षमः
All the wise and ascetics became imperishable through truth; therefore, one devoted to truth in this world is able to deliver from the cycle of rebirth.
तुलाधारो महात्मा वै सत्यवाक्ये प्रतिष्ठितः। लोके तत्सदृशो नास्ति सत्यवाक्यस्य कारणात्
The great-souled Tulādhāra, steadfast in truthfulness, has no equal in the world, because of his devotion to truthful speech.
अश्वमेधसहस्रेण सत्यं तु तुलया धृतम्। अश्वमेधसहस्राद्धि सत्यमेव विशिष्यते
If truth is weighed against a thousand horse sacrifices, truth alone surpasses even a thousand horse sacrifices.
सर्वं सत्याद्भवेत्साध्यं सत्यो हि दुरतिक्रमः। सत्यवाक्येन सा धेनुर्बहुला स्वर्गगामिनी
All is accomplished through truth, for truth is inviolable; by truthful speech, that cow Bahulā attained the path to heaven.
सर्वं राष्ट्रं समाधाय पुनरावृत्तिदुर्लभा। तथायं सर्वदा साक्षी मृषा नास्ति कदाचन
Having settled the entire kingdom, return is difficult; thus, he is always a witness, and never speaks falsehood at any time.
बह्वर्घमल्पमर्घं च क्रयविक्रयणे सुधीः। सत्यवाक्यं प्रशस्तं च विशेषात्साक्षिणो भवेत्
Whether the price is great or small in buying and selling, the wise should especially be witnesses who are known for truthful speech.
साक्षिणः सत्यमुक्त्वा च अक्षयं स्वर्गमाययुः। वावदूकः सभां प्राप्य सत्यं वदति वाक्पतिः
Witnesses who speak the truth attain inexhaustible heaven; the eloquent one, entering the assembly, speaks truth as the lord of speech.
स याति ब्रह्मणो गेहं यज्ञैरन्यैश्च दुर्लभम्। सभायां यो वदेत्सत्यमश्वमेधफलं लभेत्
He goes to the abode of Brahmā, which is difficult to attain by other sacrifices; whoever speaks truth in the assembly obtains the fruit of a horse sacrifice.
लोभाद्द्वेषान्मृषोक्त्वा च रौरवं नरकं व्रजेत्। सर्वसाक्षी तुलाधारो जनानां शूर एव च
By speaking falsehood out of greed or hatred, one goes to the hell called Raurava; Tulādhāra is the universal witness and truly a hero among people.
विशेषाल्लोभसंत्यागान्नाके निर्जरतां व्रजेत्। कश्चिच्छूद्रो महाभागो न लोभे वर्तते क्वचित्
Especially by renouncing greed, one attains the state of the immortals in heaven; there is a certain highly fortunate Śūdra who never acts out of greed.
वृत्तिश्शाकेन दुःखेन तथा शिलोंछतो भृशम्। जर्जरं वस्त्रयुग्मं च करौ पात्रे च सर्वदा
His livelihood is by gathering leaves with hardship, and by gleaning grains; his pair of garments is worn out, and his hands always serve as his bowl.
