एवं जन्मत्रयं प्राप्य मुच्यते पातकान्नरः। तत्कालं नरकं भुक्त्वा सा तु काकी तु वञ्चकी
Thus, after obtaining three births, a man is freed from sin; having suffered hell at that time, she becomes a deceitful crow.
उच्छिष्टनरकं भुक्त्वा मानुषे विधवा भवेत्। यः पुनश्चांत्यजां गच्छेन्म्लेछां वा पुल्कसां नरः
Having suffered the hell of leftovers, she becomes a widow among humans; and the man who goes to an outcaste, foreigner, or barbarian woman—
द्वित्रिचतुर्गुणं भुक्त्वा तत्र संचीर्णवंचकः। मातरं गुरुभार्यां च ब्राह्मणीं महिषीं तथा
Having suffered two, three, or four times the punishment, the deceiver there approaches his mother, his teacher's wife, a Brahmin woman, or a queen.
अन्यां वा प्रभुपत्नीं च गत्वा यात्यपुनर्भवं। भगिनीं तत्पुत्रभार्यां तथा दुहितरं स्नुषाम्
Or, having approached another's wife or the wife of a lord, he attains non-return; likewise, his sister, his son's wife, his daughter, or his daughter-in-law.
पितृव्यां मातुलानीं तु तथैव च पितृष्वसाम्। मातृष्वस्रादिकामन्यां गत्वा नास्ति च निष्कृतिः
His paternal aunt, maternal uncle's wife, and likewise his father's sister; having approached any such maternal relative, there is no expiation.
ब्रह्महा स भवेदंधो वचसा जडतां व्रजेत्। कर्णयोर्बधिरो जातश्च्यवते नास्ति निष्कृतिः
He becomes a Brahmin-slayer, blind, and attains speechlessness; he becomes deaf in both ears, falls, and there is no expiation.
उक्त्वा अश्लीलमत्यर्थमखिलं स्त्रीकृतेन हि। द्विज उवाच- एवं दुष्कृतमासाद्य कथं मोक्षो भवेत्पुनः
Having spoken excessively obscene words, all caused by women— The twice-born said: Having committed such evil, how can liberation be attained again?
तत्समाचक्ष्व भगवन्श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः। श्रीभगवानुवाच। तासां च गमनं कृत्वा तप्तां लोहस्य पुत्तलद्यं
Tell me that, O Lord, I wish to hear the truth. The Blessed Lord said: Having gone to those women, one must enter a molten iron statue.
समालिंग्य त्यजेत्प्राणं शुचिर्लोकांतरं व्रजेत्। यो वै गृहाश्रमं त्यक्त्वा मच्चित्तो जायते नरः
Embracing death, the pure one departs to another world; whoever, abandoning the householder's stage, is born with his mind fixed on me—
नित्यं स्मरति गोविंदं सर्वपापक्षयो भवेत्। ब्रह्महत्यायुतं तेन कृतं गुर्वंगनागमात्
He who always remembers Govinda, all his sins are destroyed; even ten thousand acts of killing a Brahmin, or transgressions with a teacher's wife—
शतं शतसहस्रं च पैष्टीमद्यस्य भक्षणात्। स्वर्णादेर्हरणं कृत्वा तेषां संसर्गकं चिरं५० 1.52.
A hundred, a hundred thousand, from eating forbidden meat, from stealing gold and the like, and from prolonged association with such acts—
एतान्यन्यानि पापानि महान्ति पातकानि च। अग्निं प्राप्य यथा तूलं तृणं शुष्कं प्रणश्यति
These and other great sins and offenses, just as cotton or dry grass is consumed by fire—
तस्मान्मन्नामगोविंदं स्मृत्वा पूतो भवेन्नरः। यो वा गृहाश्रमे तिष्ठेन्नित्यं गोविंदघोषणम्
Therefore, remembering my name, Govinda, a person becomes purified; even one who remains in the householder's stage, constantly proclaiming Govinda—
कृत्वा च पूजयित्वा च स पापात्सन्तरो भवेत्। भागीरथी तटे रम्ये खगस्य ग्रहणे शिवे
Having done so and worshipped, he crosses over sin; on the beautiful bank of the Bhagirathi, at the capture of the bird, in the presence of Shiva—
गवां कोटिप्रदानेन यत्फलं लभते नरः। तत्फलं समवाप्नोति सहस्रं चाधिकं च यत्
The fruit that a person obtains by giving away ten million cows, that fruit he attains, and a thousand times more—
गोविंदकीर्तने तात मत्पुरे चाक्षयं वसेत्। कामात्स भवने स्थित्वा सार्वभौमो भवेन्नृपः
By praising Govinda, O dear one, he dwells eternally in my city; by desire, remaining in his house, he becomes a universal sovereign, a king—
पुराणेमत्कथां श्रुत्वा मत्सादृश्यं लभेन्नरः। कथयित्वा पुराणं च विष्णुसायुज्यतां व्रजेत्
Having heard my story from the Purāṇa, a person attains likeness to me; and by reciting the Purāṇa, he reaches union with Vishnu—
तस्मान्नित्यं च श्रोतव्यं पुराणं धर्मसंचयं। श्रावितव्यं प्रयत्नेन लोके विष्णुतनुं व्रजेत्
Therefore, the Purāṇa, which accumulates dharma, should always be heard; it should be made heard with effort, so that in this world one attains the form of Vishnu—
अन्यद्वा स्त्रीकृते दोषे यथायोगं भवेद्ध्रुवं। निशामय प्रवक्ष्यामि तत्वतो द्विजनंदन
For any other fault committed for the sake of a woman, the appropriate result surely occurs; listen, O delight of the twice-born, I will declare it truly—
सर्वबीजस्य दानेन सांबुकुंभं महाफलम्। दद्याद्विप्राय पुण्याहे सद्यःपूतो भवेत्क्षणात्
By giving all kinds of seeds in a full pot, which is a great fruit, to a Brahmin on a holy day, one is instantly purified—
सर्वं धान्यादिकं बीजं काले दद्याद्द्विजातये। सर्वपापक्षयं कृत्वा अक्षयं स्वर्गमश्नुते
All grains and seeds should be given to a Brahmin at the proper time; having destroyed all sins, one enjoys inexhaustible heaven—
गुणं वक्ष्यामि विप्रर्षे सतीनां यादृशं दृढम्। शुद्धवंशो भवेत्तस्या नित्यं लक्ष्मीः प्रवर्तते
I will declare, O sage among Brahmins, the steadfast virtue of chaste women; her lineage becomes pure, and prosperity always abides with her—
उभयोर्वंशयोः स्वर्गो भर्तुरात्मन एव च। पतिव्रतागुणो विप्र विस्मृतः पृच्छतस्तव
Heaven belongs to both lineages, to her husband's and her own; the quality of a devoted wife, O Brahmin, you had forgotten and asked—
पुनर्वक्ष्यामि योषाणां सर्वलोकहितं शुभम्। उषित्वा पूर्वकालं च पुण्यापुण्येन योषितः
Again I will declare, for women, the auspiciousness that benefits all worlds; having lived out their previous time, by merit and demerit—
पश्चात्पतिव्रतायाश्च ताश्च गच्छंति मद्गतिम्। षण्मासं वाथ वर्षं वा अधिकं च प्रशस्यते
Afterwards, those who are devoted wives attain my state; whether for six months or a year, or more, it is praised—
पतिव्रता भवेद्या च यावत्पूता व्रजेद्दिवम्। सुरापं विप्रहंतारं सर्वपापयुतं पतिम्
A woman who is a devoted wife, as long as she is pure, ascends to heaven; even if her husband is a drinker, a killer of Brahmins, or full of all sins—
पंकात्पूतं नयेत्स्वर्गं भर्त्तांरं यानुगच्छति। कंदर्पसदृशो भर्ता सा रतीव मनोरमा
She who follows her husband, purified from the mire, leads him to heaven; her husband appears as handsome as Kāma himself, and she is as delightful as Rati.
जिष्णोरेवचिरं लोके भुंक्तेऽनंतमयं सुखम्। पतिव्रता बलाद्या च विदूरे स्वामिपातने
She enjoys endless happiness in this world for a long time, like Jishnu; but a chaste wife who, by force, causes her husband's fall, is cast far away.
चिह्नं लब्ध्वामृता वह्नौ पापादुद्धरते पतिं। पतिव्रता च या नारी देशांतरमृते पतौ
Having obtained a mark from her husband, she lifts him from sin in the fire like nectar; and the chaste woman who, except for her husband, does not go to another land.
सा भर्तुश्चिह्नमादाय वह्नौ सुप्त्वा दिवं व्रजेत्। या स्त्री ब्राह्मणजातीया मृतं पतिमनुव्रजेत्
She, taking her husband's mark, lies down in the fire and goes to heaven; the woman of Brahmin birth who follows her deceased husband.
