The Blessed Lord said: Whoever has performed devotion to the parents for a day, a month, a fortnight, half a fortnight, or a year, he attains my pure abode.
If one causes distress to the mind, he must certainly go to hell; whether the worship of the parents was done or not, it is supreme from ancient times.
By performing the release of a bull, a man obtains the fruit of devotion to the ancestors; food, clothing, and dairy, both with and without meat, are included.
Everything given to relatives is said to yield a hundred thousand times its value; the śrāddha performed with all one's possessions by a wise son.
He attains remembrance of his birth and obtains the fruit of devotion to the ancestors; among sacrifices, śrāddha is supreme, and none greater exists in the three worlds.
Whatever is given here, even a little, is enjoyed as inexhaustible; elsewhere, know that a ten-thousandfold is for relatives, a hundred thousand is declared.
For the piṇḍa offering, a ten-millionfold is declared; for a twice-born, it is said to be infinite; in the waters of the Ganges, at Gayā, Prayāga, and Puṣkara.
At Vārāṇasī, at Siddhakuṇḍa, at the confluence of the Ganges and the ocean, whoever gives a rice-ball there surely attains liberation.
The ancestors obtain inexhaustible heaven and the fruit of birth; especially, whoever gives sesame-water in the Bhāgīrathī.
He attains the path of liberation, and what then of the piṇḍa offering? On riverbanks, a thousandfold is desired; in the river itself, ten thousandfold is esteemed.
Through the association with general fruits, śrāddha becomes a hundredfold; at the beginning of an age, at the eclipse of the sun and moon.
Whoever performs the parvaṇa rite enjoys an inexhaustible world; all his ancestors are satisfied, each for a hundred thousand.
Having given cherished blessings and endless enjoyment to his son, thereafter, on the festival day, the sons should joyfully perform the parvaṇa rite.
By performing this sacrifice for the parents, one is freed from the bondage of birth; the śrāddha performed daily is called the eternal śrāddha.
Whoever performs it with faith attains an imperishable world; likewise, on the other fortnight, a kāmya śrāddha should be performed according to rule.
Having performed it as desired, one obtains whatever is held in the mind; making the fifth fortnight up to Āṣāḍhī as the limit.
There, one should perform the śrāddha, whether the maiden departs or not; when the maiden has gone to Savitṛ, the following sixteen days—
—are equal to sacrifices completed with the best gifts; this kāmya śrāddha is of great merit and brings auspiciousness to the one who performs it.
In the absence of the dark fortnight at the beginning, one should perform it in Tulā; when the new moon comes in Vṛścika, the ancestors, having lost hope—
—return again to their own abode, having pronounced a most dreadful curse; by the curse of the ancestors, all of the son’s possessions are lost, so it is remembered.
Wealth, sons, fame, desired objects, and even long life—all these are obtained by humans birth after birth.
And by the boon of the ancestors alone; therefore, one should not neglect this. At the beginning of marriage, vows, or sacrifices, a twice-born should perform the Nāndīmukha rite.
He attains inexhaustible merit, and his lineage prospers; but one who does the opposite goes to hell.
Destruction of the family befalls him, and that soul becomes miserable; therefore, one should first worship Gaṇeśa, the son of Śambhu.
Then, the sixteen mothers, and after that, the collection of ancestors; in all Nāndīmukha rites, beginning with the great-grandfather.
In the Nāndīmukha, the wise should seat all the twice-born facing east; he should recite the words of salutation and elsewhere add 'svadhā.'
At the eclipse of the moon or sun, a man who gives piṇḍa and water obtains inexhaustible heaven and increases the nourishment of the ancestors.
But if one does not bathe there, or, being able, does not give piṇḍa and water to the ancestors, he attains the state of a cāṇḍāla.
All gifts of land are equal, all twice-born are equal to Vyāsa; all water is equal to Gaṅgā water when the moon is seized by Rāhu.
A hundred thousandfold merit is declared for the moon, and a million for the sun; if one obtains Gaṅgā water at that time, it is ten million for the sun and a crore for the moon.
