For health, one should worship the Sun; for righteousness and liberation, Madhava; for the fulfillment of duties, Shiva; and for all desires, Chandika.
Having worshipped the gods, one should offer the Vaisvadeva oblation. After performing the fire ritual, one should conduct the sacrifice and the offering to Brahmins.
Again, having satisfied the gods and all beings, one attains heaven. Having made the cycle of coming and going firm, through desire, one attains liberation, happiness, and the celestial world.
Therefore, with all effort, one should always perform the prescribed duties. Narada said: For what reason, O father, do the gods together with the groups of ancestors not obtain water as humans do?
They do not receive it, O all-knowing one, as humans do. Brahma said: Long ago, I created water as the nectar for all the gods.
For the protection of that very water, the Yakshas, wielders of bows, are its guardians. They strike down the ancestors and gods at our command, but not humans.
Animals, birds, and insects are established in the world of mortals; and those gods who are born as mortals, likewise, are certainly humans.
By always satisfying the teacher, they are established in the world of the gods. One who does not bathe consumes filth, and one who does not recite suffers from pus and blood.
By not performing the daily offering of water, one becomes a slayer of ancestors. Not worshipping the gods is a sin equal to killing a Brahmin.
And by not performing the twilight rites, the sinner harms the Sun. Narada said: Tell me the proper conduct and duties for a Brahmin, and also the practices for the other classes.
And tell me all the duties prescribed for the other classes. Brahma said: From good conduct one obtains long life, and from good conduct one obtains happiness.
From good conduct one attains heaven and liberation; good conduct destroys misfortune. A man without good conduct is blamed in the world.
He always partakes of suffering, is afflicted by disease, and has a short life. Surely, because of bad conduct, a man dwells in hell.
From good conduct, one attains the highest world. Listen to the truth about conduct: one should always plaster the house with cow dung.
Then one should wash the seat, wooden objects, vessels, and stone surfaces; a bronze vessel is purified with ash, and copper with sour substances.
A stone vessel is purified with oil, a ploughshare with a wisp of grass; vessels of gold, silver, and the like are purified with water alone.
An iron vessel is purified by fire and by thorough washing; also by scraping, burning, coating, and rinsing.
By the washing of rain, the earth becomes pure; so too all objects of metal, gems, and all things made of stone.
Purification by ashes and by clay has already been explained by me; a bed, wife, child, garment, sacred thread, and water pot are pure for oneself.
These are declared pure for oneself, never for others; one should not eat wearing only one garment, nor bathe with only one cloth.
One should never wear another's bathing cloth; the cleansing of hair and teeth should be done early in the morning.
One should always offer respect to teachers; with hands, feet, and mouth washed, one should partake of food while these five are wet.
He who eats with the five parts wet lives a hundred years; the command of the gods, the teacher, and even the preceptor must be obeyed.
One should not cross, at will, the shadow of a Brahmin or an initiated person; nor of a herd of cows, a deity, a Brahmin, ghee, honey, or a crossroads.
One should circumambulate them to the right, as well as renowned trees; also a cow, a Brahmin, fire, two Brahmins, and a married couple.
One should not pass between them, for even one who dwells in heaven would surely fall; one who is impure should not touch fire, a Brahmin, a deity, or a teacher.
One should not look at one's own head, a flowering tree, a sacrificial tree, or a wicked person while impure; nor ever gaze at the three fires while impure.
In the same way, one should not look at the sun, the moon, or all the stars; nor at a Brahmin, teacher, deity, king, or the best among ascetics.
Nor at a yogin, one engaged in divine acts, a twice-born who teaches dharma, nor at the banks of rivers, nor at the lord of rivers.
At the root of a sacrificial tree, in a garden, or in a flower grove, one should not relieve oneself, nor in a place where life is sustained.
