Shankara, Shiva, Shambhu, Ishvara, Maheshvara, Ganesha, likewise Skanda, Gauri, Bhagirathi, and Shiva—
The king Nala of holy fame, Janardana of holy fame, Vaidehi of holy fame, and Yudhishthira of holy fame—
Aśvatthāman, Bali, Vyāsa, Hanumān, Vibhīṣaṇa, Kṛpa, and Paraśurāma—these seven are the long-lived ones.
Whoever remembers these every day upon rising in the morning, that person is freed from sins such as the killing of a Brāhmaṇa; of this there is no doubt.
O dear one, by reciting them even once, one attains the fruit of all sacrifices and enjoys the merit of giving a hundred thousand cows.
Then, in a clean place, one should pass stool and urine—facing south at night, and facing north during the day.
Afterwards, one should use a tooth-stick made of grass, udumbara, or similar wood; then, at the time of twilight, the twice-born should practice self-restraint.
In the forenoon, one should meditate on Sarasvatī as red in color; at midday, as white; and in the evening, as dark, according to the proper method.
Then, one should carefully perform bathing as prescribed, and after washing the limbs, one should apply clay to the body.
On the head, forehead, nose, heart, between the eyebrows, on the arms, sides, navel, both knees, and both feet—
One portion on the organ, three at the anus, ten on the left hand; seven on both hands—thus should clay be applied by one desiring purity.
O Earth, trodden by horses, by chariots, by Viṣṇu—O clay, remove the sin that I have accumulated previously.
Whoever applies clay to the body with this very mantra, for that person all sins are destroyed and he becomes pure.
Then, according to Vedic instruction, the wise should bathe—whether in a river, stream, well, pond, or lake.
Also in a body of water, on an embankment, or by pouring water from a pot—one should bathe according to rule, for the destruction of all sins.
Bathing in the morning is highly meritorious and destroys all sins; a Brāhmaṇa who does this regularly is honored in the world of Viṣṇu.
Near the morning twilight, for as long as four daṇḍas, water is like nectar for the ancestors.
After that, for two ghaṭikās, up to one yāma of the day, water is like honey and increases the satisfaction of the ancestors.
Then, for half a yāma, water is considered to be like milk; water mixed with milk is so until four daṇḍas have passed.
After that, water is so for three praharas; beyond that, it is said to be like blood, until the sun sets.
In the fourth watch, during bathing, or at night, one should offer libations to the ancestors; the water thus used is considered pure, even without ritual for warding off demons.
I have previously prepared water for all sacred purposes; for its protection, yakshas are appointed as guardians.
The ancestors who have departed to other worlds do not obtain this water; it is difficult for them to access, except through their own descendants living on earth.
Therefore, disciples, sons, grandsons, great-grandchildren, relatives, and others should perform offerings to the ancestors, observing the ancestral rites.
Narada said: Tell me the deity of water and the procedure for the offering; O Lord of the gods, you should explain it to me so I may know the truth.
Brahma said: Vishnu is praised as the deity of water in all worlds; whoever is purified by water becomes Vishnu, and thus becomes auspicious.
By drinking even a mouthful of water, a person is purified; especially when in contact with kusa grass, water surpasses nectar.
I have fashioned darbha grass as the abode of all the gods; at the root of kusa is Brahma, and in the middle is Kesava.
Know that Shankara is at the tip of kusa; these kusa blades are established thus. One holding kusa is always pure, if he recites hymns and mantras.
Everything is said to be a hundredfold greater at a sacred place, and a thousandfold so. Kusa, kasha, durva, barley leaves, and rice grains—
