तस्य दानेन मंत्रस्य पृथ्वीदानसमं फलं। शतक्रतुसमो मर्त्यः कुलमुद्धरते शतं
By giving such a cow with the proper mantra, one obtains the same merit as giving the earth; a mortal becomes equal to Indra and uplifts a hundred generations of his lineage.
गवां च हरणं कृत्वा मृते गोरथवत्सके। क्रिमिपूर्णे स कूपे च तिष्ठेदाभूतसंप्लवं
Having stolen cows, or killed a cow or her calf, one must remain in a well filled with worms until the end of the age of destruction.
गवां चैव वधं कृत्वा पितृभिः सह पच्यते। रौरवे नरके घोरे तावत्कालं प्रतिक्रिया
Having killed a cow, one is cooked together with the ancestors in the dreadful hell called Raurava for as long as the consequence endures.
गोप्रचारप्रभग्नश्च षंडवाहनबंधनः। अक्षयं नरकं प्रायान्पुनर्जन्मनि जन्मनि
One who destroys the pasture of cows, or binds the bull of the herd, goes to unending hell, being reborn again and again.
सकृच्च श्रावयेद्यस्तु कथां पुण्यतमामिमां। सर्वपापक्षयस्तस्य देवैश्च सह मोदते
Whoever even once causes this most holy story to be heard, all his sins are destroyed and he rejoices together with the gods.
य इदं शृणुयाद्वापि परं पुण्यतमं महत्। सप्तजन्मकृतात्पापान्मुच्यते तत्क्षणेन हि
Whoever hears this most holy and great account is freed at that very moment from sins accumulated over seven births.
एकोनपञ्चाशोऽध्यायः । नारद उवाच- केनाचारेण विप्रस्य ब्रह्मतेजो विवर्धते। केनाचारेण तस्यैव ब्राह्मं तेजो विनश्यति
Chapter Forty-Nine. Narada said: By what conduct does a brahmin's spiritual radiance increase? And by what conduct does that very brahmin's radiance diminish?
ब्रह्मोवाच-। शयनीयात्समुत्थाय रात्र्यंशे द्विजसत्तमः। देवांश्चैव स्मरेन्नित्यं तथा पुण्यवतो ध्रुवम्
Brahma said: Rising from bed at the end of night, the best of twice-born should always remember the gods, as well as the truly virtuous.
गोविंदं माधवं कृष्णं हरिं दामोदरं तथा। नारायणं जगन्नाथं वासुदेवमजं विभुम्
Govinda, Madhava, Krishna, Hari, Damodara, likewise Narayana, Lord of the Universe, Vasudeva, the unborn, the all-pervading—
सरस्वतीं महालक्ष्मीं सावित्रीं वेदमातरम्। ब्रह्माणं भास्करं चन्द्रं दिक्पालांश्च ग्रहांस्तथा
Sarasvati, Mahalakshmi, Savitri, mother of the Vedas, Brahma, the Sun, the Moon, the guardians of the directions, and also the planets—
शङ्करं च शिवं शंभुमीश्वरं च महेश्वरम्। गणेशं च तथा स्कन्दं गौरीं भागीरथीं शिवाम्
Shankara, Shiva, Shambhu, Ishvara, Maheshvara, Ganesha, likewise Skanda, Gauri, Bhagirathi, and Shiva—
पुण्यश्लोको नलो राजा पुण्यश्लोको जनार्दनः। पुण्यश्लोका च वैदेही पुण्यश्लोको युधिष्ठिरः
The king Nala of holy fame, Janardana of holy fame, Vaidehi of holy fame, and Yudhishthira of holy fame—
अश्वत्थामा बलिर्व्यासो हनूमांश्च विभीषणः। कृपः परशुरामश्च सप्तैते चीरजीविनः
Aśvatthāman, Bali, Vyāsa, Hanumān, Vibhīṣaṇa, Kṛpa, and Paraśurāma—these seven are the long-lived ones.
एतान्यस्तु स्मरेन्नित्यं प्रातरुत्थाय मानवः। ब्रह्महत्यादिभिः पापैर्मुच्यते नात्र संशयः
Whoever remembers these every day upon rising in the morning, that person is freed from sins such as the killing of a Brāhmaṇa; of this there is no doubt.
सकृदुच्चरिते तात सर्वयज्ञफलं लभेत्। गवां शतसहस्राणां दानस्य फलमश्नुते
O dear one, by reciting them even once, one attains the fruit of all sacrifices and enjoys the merit of giving a hundred thousand cows.
ततश्चापि शुचौ देशे मलमूत्रं परित्यजेत्। दक्षिणाभिमुखो रात्रौ दिवा कुर्यादुदङ्मुखः
Then, in a clean place, one should pass stool and urine—facing south at night, and facing north during the day.
परतो दंतकाष्ठं च तृणैरुदुंबरादिभिः। अतः परं च संध्यायां संयतश्च द्विजो भवेत्
Afterwards, one should use a tooth-stick made of grass, udumbara, or similar wood; then, at the time of twilight, the twice-born should practice self-restraint.
पूर्वाह्णे रक्तवर्णां तु मध्याह्ने शुक्लवर्णिकाम्। सायं सरस्वतीं कृष्णां द्विजो ध्यायेद्यथाविधि
In the forenoon, one should meditate on Sarasvatī as red in color; at midday, as white; and in the evening, as dark, according to the proper method.
ततः समाचरेत्स्नानं यथाज्ञानेन यत्नतः। अंगं प्रक्षालयित्वा तु मृद्भिः संलेपयेत्ततः
Then, one should carefully perform bathing as prescribed, and after washing the limbs, one should apply clay to the body.
शिरोदेशे ललाटे च नासिकायां हृदि भ्रुवोः। बाह्वोः पार्श्वे तथा नाभौ जान्वोरङ्घ्रिद्वये तथा
On the head, forehead, nose, heart, between the eyebrows, on the arms, sides, navel, both knees, and both feet—
एका लिंगे गुदे तिस्रस्तथा वामकरे दश। उभयोः सप्त दातव्या मृदः शुद्धिमभीप्सता
One portion on the organ, three at the anus, ten on the left hand; seven on both hands—thus should clay be applied by one desiring purity.
अश्वक्रांते रथक्रांते विष्णुक्रांते वसुंधरे। मृत्तिके हर मे पापं यन्मया पूर्वसंचितम्
O Earth, trodden by horses, by chariots, by Viṣṇu—O clay, remove the sin that I have accumulated previously.
अनेनैव तु मंत्रेण मृत्तिकां यस्तनौ क्षिपेत्। सर्वपापक्षयस्तस्य शुचिर्भवति मानवः
Whoever applies clay to the body with this very mantra, for that person all sins are destroyed and he becomes pure.
ततस्तु वेदपूर्वेण स्नानं कुर्याद्विचक्षणः। नदे नद्यां तथा कूपे पुष्करिण्यां तटाकके
Then, according to Vedic instruction, the wise should bathe—whether in a river, stream, well, pond, or lake.
जलराशौ च वप्रे च घटस्नानं तथोत्तरम्। कारयेद्विधिवन्मर्त्यः सर्वपापक्षयाय च
Also in a body of water, on an embankment, or by pouring water from a pot—one should bathe according to rule, for the destruction of all sins.
प्रातःस्नानं महापुण्यं सर्वपापप्रणाशनम्। यः कुर्यात्सततं विप्रो विष्णुलोके महीयते
Bathing in the morning is highly meritorious and destroys all sins; a Brāhmaṇa who does this regularly is honored in the world of Viṣṇu.
प्रातः संध्यासमीपे च यावद्दंडचतुष्टयम्। तावत्पानीयममृतं पितॄणामुपतिष्ठते
Near the morning twilight, for as long as four daṇḍas, water is like nectar for the ancestors.
परतो घटिकायुग्मं यावद्यामैकमाह्निकम्। मधुतुल्यं जलं तस्मिन्पितॄणां प्रीतिवर्धनम्
After that, for two ghaṭikās, up to one yāma of the day, water is like honey and increases the satisfaction of the ancestors.
ततस्तु सार्द्धयामैकं जलं क्षीरमयं स्मृतम्। क्षीरमिश्रं जलं तावद्यावद्दण्डचतुष्टयम्
Then, for half a yāma, water is considered to be like milk; water mixed with milk is so until four daṇḍas have passed.
अतः परं च पानीयं यावद्धि प्रहरत्रयम्। तत्परं लोहितं प्रोक्तं यावदस्तंगतो रविः
After that, water is so for three praharas; beyond that, it is said to be like blood, until the sun sets.
