अगस्त्यभवनं चैव यदगस्त्यकृतं पुरा। सिद्धचारणसंघैश्च विप्रकीर्णं मनोहरम्
And the dwelling of Agastya, which was formerly made by Agastya, was scattered with assemblies of perfected beings and celestial bards, and was enchanting.
विचित्रनानाविहगं सपुष्पितमहाद्रुमम्। जातरूपमयैः शृंगैरप्सरोगणसेवितम्
It was adorned with various wondrous birds and great blossoming trees, with peaks made of gold, and attended by groups of apsarases.
गिरिः पुष्पितकश्चैव लक्ष्मीवान्प्रियदर्शनः। उत्थितः सागरं भित्वा विश्रामश्चंद्रसूर्ययोः
There stood the mountain Puṣpitaka, beautiful and rich in fortune, having pierced the ocean and serving as a resting place for the moon and the sun.
रराज स महाशृंगैर्गगनं विलिखन्निव। चंद्रसूर्यांशुसंकाशैः सागरांबुसमावृतैः
That mountain shone with great peaks, as if scratching the sky, covered with the waters of the ocean and radiant like the rays of the moon and sun.
विद्युत्त्वान्पर्वतः श्रीमानायतः शतयोजनम्। विद्युतां यत्र संपाता निपात्यंते नगोत्तमे
That illustrious mountain, extending a hundred yojanas, was filled with lightning; there, the flashes of lightning would strike upon the best of mountains.
ऋषभः पर्वतश्चैव श्रीमानृषभसंस्थितः। कुंजरः पर्वतः श्रीमानगस्त्यस्य गृहं शुभम्
There was the mountain Ṛṣabha, glorious and standing like a bull; and the mountain Kuñjara, splendid, which was the auspicious home of Agastya.
विमलाख्या च दुर्द्धर्षा सर्पाणां मालती पुरी। तथा भोगवती चापि दैत्येंद्रेणाभिकंपिता
There was the city called Vimalā, unconquerable, belonging to the serpents, and Mālatī; and also Bhogavatī, shaken by the lord of the Daityas.
महासेनगिरिश्चैव पारियात्रश्च पर्वतः। चक्रवांश्च गिरिश्रेष्ठो वाराहश्चैव पर्वतः
There was the great mountain Mahāsena, and also the Pāriyātra mountain; Cakravān, the best of mountains, and also the Vārāha mountain.
प्राग्ज्योतिषपुरं चापि जातरूपमयं शुभम्। यस्मिन्नुवास दुष्टात्मा नरको नाम दानवः
There was also the city of Prāgjyotiṣa, auspicious and made of gold, where the wicked-hearted Naraka, the Dānava, once dwelled.
मेघश्च पर्वतश्रेष्ठो मेघगंभीरनिस्स्वनः। षष्टिस्तत्र सहस्राणि पर्वतानां विशांपते
There was the chief of mountains, Megha, with a deep, thunderous sound; and there, O lord of men, were sixty thousand mountains.
तरुणादित्यसंकाशो मेरुश्चैव महान्गिरिः। यक्षराक्षसगंधर्वैर्नित्यं सेवितकंदरः
There was the great mountain Meru, radiant like the rising sun, whose caves were always attended by yakṣas, rākṣasas, and gandharvas.
हेमगर्भो महासेनस्तथा मेघसखो गिरिः। कैलासश्चैव शैलेंद्रो दानवेंद्रेण कंपितः
There was Hemagarbha, Mahāsena, and the mountain Meghasakha; and Kailāsa, the lord of mountains, shaken by the lord of the Dānavas.
हेमपुष्करसञ्छन्नं तेन वैखानसं सरः। कंपितं मानसं चैव हंसकारंडवाकुलम्
There, covered with golden lotuses, was the lake Vaikhānasa, and the lake Mānasa, shaken and crowded with swans and cranes.
त्रिशृंगः पर्वतश्रेष्ठः कुमारी च सरिद्वरा। तुषारचयसंच्छन्नो मंदरश्चापि पर्वतः
There was Triśṛṅga, the foremost of mountains, and the excellent river Kumārī; and Mandara mountain, covered with heaps of snow.
उशीरबीजश्च गिरिर्भद्रप्रस्थस्तथाद्रिराट्। प्रजापतिगिरिश्चैव तथा पुष्करपर्वतः
There was the mountain Uśīrabīja, and the king of mountains, Bhadraprastha; also the mountain of Prajāpati, and the mountain Puṣkara.
देवाभः पर्वतश्चैव तथा वै वालुकागिरिः। क्रौंचः सप्तर्षिशैलश्च धूम्रवर्णश्च पर्वतः
There was the mountain Devābha, and likewise the sandy mountain; Kraunca, the mountain of the seven sages, and the smoky-colored mountain.
एते चान्ये च गिरयो देशा जनपदास्तथा। नद्यः ससागराः सर्वाः दानवेनाभिकंपिताः
These and other mountains, regions, and peoples, and all the rivers with their oceans, were shaken by the Dānava.
कपिलश्च महीपुत्रो व्याघ्रवांश्च प्रकंपितः। खेचराश्च निशापुत्राः पातालतलवासिनः
Kapila, the son of the earth, and Vyāghravān were shaken; and the sky-dwellers, sons of the night, who dwell in the depths of the underworld.
गणस्तथापरो रौद्रो मेघनामांकुशायुधः। ऊर्द्ध्वगो भीमवेगश्च सर्व एतेभिकंपिताः
Another host, fierce and named Megha, armed with a goad, ascended upward with terrifying speed; all these were shaken by him.
गदी शूली करालश्च हिरण्यकशिपुस्तथा। जीमूतघननिर्घोषो जीमूत इव वेगवान्
Wielding a mace and a trident, grim-faced, was Hiraṇyakaśipu; his roar thundered like a raincloud, swift as a storm.
देवारिर्दितिजो दृप्तो नृसिंहं समुपाद्रवत्। स तु तेन ततस्तीक्ष्णैर्मृगेंद्रेण महानखैः
The arrogant enemy of the gods, born of Diti, rushed upon Narasiṃha; but then, by the sharp claws of the lion-lord,
तदोंकारसहायेन विदार्य निहतो युधि। मही च कालश्च शशीनभश्च ग्रहास्स सूर्याश्च दिशश्च सर्वाः
Aided by the sound of Om, he was torn apart and slain in battle; and the earth, time, the moon, the planets, the sun, and all the directions,
नद्यश्च शैलाश्च महार्णवाश्च गताः प्रसादं दितिपुत्रनाशात्। ततः प्रमुदिता देवा ऋषयश्च तपोधनाः
The rivers, mountains, and great oceans found peace at the destruction of Diti's son; then the delighted gods and ascetic sages,
तुष्टुवुर्नामभिर्दिव्यैरादिदेवं सनातनम्। यत्त्वया विधृतं देव नारसिंहमिदं वपुः
Praised the primeval, eternal God with divine names: 'O God, this Narasiṃha form which you have assumed—'
एतदेवार्चयिष्यंति परापरविदो जनाः। ब्रह्मोवाच-। भवान्ब्रह्मा च रुद्रश्च महेंद्रो देवसत्तमः
'This alone will be worshipped by those who know the highest and the lowest.' Brahmā said: 'You are Brahmā, Rudra, and Mahendra, best of the gods.'
भवान्कर्त्ता विकर्त्ता च लोकानां प्रभवोऽव्ययः। परां च सिद्धिं च परं च सत्वं परं रहस्यं परमं हविश्च
'You are the creator and destroyer, the imperishable origin of the worlds; the supreme attainment, the highest essence, the supreme secret, the greatest offering.'
परं च धर्मं परमं यशश्च त्वामाहुरग्र्यं परमं पुराणम्। परं च सत्यं परमं तपश्च परं पवित्रं परमं च मार्गं
'The highest dharma, the greatest glory, you are called the foremost, the supreme, the ancient; the highest truth, the greatest austerity, the supreme purity, the highest path.'
परं च यज्ञं परमं च होत्रं त्वामाहुरग्य्रं परमं पुराणम्। परं शरीरं परमं च ब्रह्म परं च योगं परमां च वाणीम्
'The highest sacrifice, the greatest oblation, you are called the foremost, the supreme, the ancient; the highest body, the greatest Brahman, the supreme yoga, the highest speech.'
परं रहस्यं परमां गतिं च त्वामाहुरग्य्रं परमं पुराणम्। एवमुक्त्वा तु भगवान्सर्वलोकपितामहः
'The supreme secret, the highest goal, you are called the foremost, the supreme, the ancient.' Having spoken thus, the blessed grandsire of all worlds,
स्तुत्वा नारायणं देवं ब्रह्मलोकं गतः प्रभुः। ततो नदत्सु तूर्येषु नृत्यंतीष्वप्सरःसु च
Having praised the god Nārāyaṇa, the Lord went to Brahmā's world; then, as the drums resounded and the celestial nymphs danced,
