Thus addressed, she replied, 'So be it,' and that auspicious one went to the mountain; Uma too, the wondrous daughter of the mountain, went to her father's garden.
Entering the sky, shining like a mass of clouds, she then set aside her ornaments and donned garments of tree-bark.
In summer she was scorched by five fires, in the rains she dwelled in water; she lived on forest fare, sometimes fasting, lying on dry ground.
Thus, engaged in severe austerity, she remained there; knowing that the mountain's daughter had gone, a powerful demon arrived in the meantime.

The delighted son of Andhaka, recalling his father's death, having conquered all the gods in battle, that fierce warrior, brother of Baka, stood out in war.
Named Āḍi, ever watching for the crescent-crested one, the foe of the immortals, he came to the city of the slayer of Tripura.
Arriving there, he saw Vīraka standing at the gate; considering that he too had received a boon from the lotus-born one.
When Andhaka, the demon, was slain by the mountain lord, the enemy of the demons, Āḍi performed severe and terrible austerities.
Then Brahmā, pleased by his austerities, came and said: 'What do you wish to obtain, O best of Dānavas, by your penance?
The demon said to Brahmā: 'I choose to be free from death.' Brahmā replied: 'For those born in this world, freedom from death is not possible.'
Therefore, O lord of demons, death must be attained by embodied beings; thus addressed, the lion among demons spoke to the lotus-born one.
He said, 'O lotus-born, when there is a change in my form, then let death come to me; otherwise, I remain without fear.'
Thus addressed, the lotus-born, pleased, said: 'When a second transformation of your form occurs, then death will come to you.'
At that time, death will be yours; otherwise, it will not be. Thus spoken, the mighty son of the demon considered himself immortal.
At that time, recalling the means for his own destruction, I came into the sight of Vīraka, the guardian.
Taking the form of a serpent, the fierce and unconquerable demon entered through a crevice into the line of sight, evading Gaṇeśa.
Unnoticed by Ganesha, the great asura entered and, abandoning his serpent form, assumed another body.

With a deluded mind, he created by his magic an enchanting and inconceivable form of Uma, to delight Girisha.
He made it complete in every limb, enhanced with all marks of recognition, and placed within its mouth a firm, adamantine tooth.
With a sharp point, driven by confusion of intellect, the demon, having assumed Uma's form, approached Girisha with intent to kill.
Sinful yet of lovely appearance, adorned with splendid ornaments and garments, he was embraced by Girisha, who, pleased, took him for the great asura.
Believing her to be the daughter of the Mountain, complete in every feature, he questioned her, 'O daughter of the Mountain, is your nature truly virtuous and not artificial?'
O beautiful one, knowing my desire, you have come here; without you, my abode and the three worlds are empty.
Now that you have come with a gracious face, it is fitting that this should be so with you.' Thus addressed, the lord of the demons replied to him with a gentle smile.
He, recognizing by certain signs, spoke to the destroyer of Tripura: The demon said, 'I have come to Himachala, driven by desire, to obtain a boon through austerity.'
'There, Menā became the object of my passion, and thus I have come near you.' Hearing this, Shankara became suspicious and pondered in his mind.
Composing his heart, the god, with a smiling face, realized her anger and her naturally firm vow, perceiving her to be angry.

'She, whose desire was unfulfilled, has now arrived—what does this mean?' Thinking thus, Hara considered her identity.
He did not see on her left side the lotus mark on her hip, formed by a whorl of hair; then the god, wielder of the Pinaka bow,
Recognizing that this was a demoness in disguise, he concealed his awareness, and, taking up the weapon of the genital fang, struck down the demon.
