व्यग्रा तु पृथिवी देवी सर्वभावात्मनोरमा। गृहीत्वा वरुणः साक्षाद्रत्नाढ्याभरणानि च
But the goddess Earth, intent with all her being, and Varuṇa himself, brought ornaments rich with jewels.
पुष्पाणि च विचित्राणि नानारत्नमयानि तु। तस्थौ साभरणो देवः सर्वज्ञः सर्वदेहिनाम्
And also various wondrous flowers, made of many kinds of gems; the all-knowing Lord of all beings stood there, adorned with ornaments.
ज्वलनश्चापि दिव्यानि हैमान्याभरणानि च। जातरूपपवित्राणि प्रयतः समुपस्थितः
And Fire, too, brought divine golden ornaments, pure as refined gold, and approached with devotion.
वायुर्ववौ च सुरभिः सुखसंस्पर्शनो विभुम्। छत्रं चंद्रकरोद्दामं हासितं च शतक्रतुः
The wind blew gently, fragrant and pleasant to the touch for the Lord; and Indra, the hundred-sacrificer, held up a bright parasol like the moon’s rays, smiling.
जग्राह मुदितः श्रीमान्बाहुभिर्वज्रभूषणः। जगुर्गंधर्वमुख्याश्च ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः
Joyful and splendid, adorned with the thunderbolt, he took it up with his arms; the chief Gandharvas sang, and the groups of Apsarases danced.
वादयंतोतिमधुरं जगुर्गंधर्वकिन्नराः। मुहूर्तादृतवस्तत्र जगुश्च ननृतुश्च वै
The Gandharvas and Kinnaras played exceedingly sweet music and sang; for a moment, the seasons themselves sang and danced there.
चपलाश्च गणास्तस्थुर्लोडयंतो हिमाचलम्। उपविष्टः क्रमाद्धाता विश्वकृद्भगनेत्रहा
The restless hosts stood, shaking Mount Himāchala; then, in order, the Creator, the Maker of the universe, and the remover of Bhaga’s eyes, sat down.
चकारौद्वाहिकं कृत्यं पत्न्या सह यथोदितम्। दत्तार्घ्यो गिरिराजेन सुरवृंदैर्विनोदितः
He performed the wedding rites with his wife as prescribed, having received the arghya from the king of mountains, entertained by the hosts of gods.
अवसत्तां क्षपां तत्र पत्न्या सह पुरांतकः। ततो गंधर्वगीतेन नृत्येनाप्सरसामपि
There, the Ender of the city, together with his wife, spent the night; then, with the singing of Gandharvas and the dancing of Apsarases,
स्तुतिभिर्देवदैत्यानां विबुद्धो विबुधाधिपः। आमंत्र्य हिमशैलेंद्रं प्रभाते जायया सह
With praises from gods and demons, the awakened Lord of the wise, at dawn, addressed the lord of the snowy mountain, together with his wife.
जगाम मंदरगिरिं वायुवेगेन शृंगिणा। ततो गते भगवति नीललोहिते सहोमया रतिमनुभूतभूधरः
He went to Mount Mandara, riding the bull with the speed of the wind; then, when the Lord Nīlalohita had departed with Umā, the mountain, having experienced delight, remained.
सबांधवो भवति हि कस्य नो मनो विशृंखलं जगति हि कन्यका पितुः। पुरोद्यानेषु रम्येषु विविक्तेषु वनेषु च
For whom, when the beloved departs with her kin, does the mind not become unrestrained in this world? Indeed, in the case of a daughter, in lovely gardens and secluded forests of her father’s house.
सुरक्तहृदयो देव्या विजहार भगाक्षिहा। ततो बहुतिथे काले पुत्रनाम्ना गिरेः सुता
With his heart deeply devoted to the goddess, the slayer of Bhaga's eye delighted in her company; after a long time, the daughter of the mountain, named Putranā, appeared.
सखीभिः सहिता क्रीडां चक्रे कृत्रिम पुत्रकैः। कदाचिद्गंधतैलेन गात्रमभ्यज्य शैलजा
Together with her companions, she played with artificial children; once, the mountain-born maiden anointed her body with fragrant oil.
चूर्णैरुद्वर्तयामास मलेनापूरितां तनुम्। तदुद्वर्त्तनकं गृह्य नरं चक्रे गजाननम्
She rubbed her body, filled with dust, with powders; taking that paste, she fashioned a man with the head of an elephant.
पुरुषं क्रीडती देवी तच्चाप्यक्षिपदंभसि। जाह्नव्या शिवया सख्या ततः सोभूद्बृहत्तनुः
The goddess, while playing, made a man and placed him in water; by the Ganges, with her friend Shiva, then a great-bodied being arose.
कायेनातिविशालेन जगदापूरयत्तदा। पुत्रेत्युवाच तं देवी पुत्रेत्यूचे च जाह्नवी
With a body exceedingly vast, he then filled the world; the goddess called him 'son,' and Jahnavi also addressed him as 'son.'
गांगेय इति देवैस्तु पूजितोऽभूद्गजाननः। विनायकाधिपत्यं च ददावस्य पितामहः
The gods worshipped him as Gāṅgeya, the elephant-faced one; and the grandsire granted him the lordship of the leaders of obstacles.
पुनः सा क्रीडती चक्रे तरुं च वरवर्णिनी। मनोज्ञमंकुरं रूढमशोकस्य शुभानना
Again, while playing, the beautiful-complexioned goddess made a tree; the auspicious-faced one caused a delightful ashoka sapling to sprout.
वर्द्धयामास तं चापि कृतसंस्कारमंगलम्। बृहस्पतिमुखैर्विप्रैर्दिवस्पतिपुरोहितैः
She nurtured it, performing the proper rites and blessings, with Brhaspati and other priests, the household priests of the gods.
ततो देवैः समुनिभिः प्रोक्ता देवी त्विदं वचः। अधुना दर्शिते मार्गे मर्यादां कर्तुमर्हसि
Then the assembled gods spoke these words to the goddess: 'Now that the path is shown, you should establish a standard.'
फलं किं भविता देवि कल्पितैस्तरुपुत्रकैः। इत्युक्ता हर्षपूर्णांगी प्रोवाचातिशुभां गिरं
'What fruit will come, O goddess, from these imagined tree-children?' Thus addressed, she, her body filled with joy, spoke most auspicious words.
एकं निरुदके ग्रामे यः कूपं कारयेद्बुधः। बिंदौबिंदौ च तोयस्य स वसेद्वत्सरं दिवि
'Whoever, in a waterless village, causes a well to be made, for each drop of water, he shall dwell in heaven for a year.'
दशकूपसमावापी दशवापीसमो ह्रदः। दशह्रदसमा कन्या दशकन्यासमो द्रुमः
'A pond equals ten wells, a lake equals ten ponds, a daughter equals ten lakes, and a tree equals ten daughters.'
एषा वै शुभ मर्यादा नियता लोकभाविनी। इत्युक्तास्तु ततो विप्रा बृहस्पतिपुरोगमाः
'This, indeed, is the auspicious standard, established for the world.' Thus addressed, the Brahmins, led by Brhaspati, then—
जग्मुः स्वमंदिराण्येव भवानीं वंद्य मातरं। गतेषु तेषु देवोपि शंकरः पर्वतात्मजां
Returned to their own homes, having worshipped Bhavani, the mother; after they departed, the god Shankara, with the mountain-born lady—
पाणिनालम्ब्यमानेन न स्वमावासमगच्छत। चित्तप्रसादजननं प्रासादाट्टालगोपुरं
Holding her hand, did not return to his own abode; he entered a palace with towers and gateways, delightful to the mind.
लंबमौक्तिकदामानं मालिकाकुलवेदिकं। सुनद्धकलधौतं च क्रीडागृहमनोगतं
Adorned with hanging pearl garlands, with platforms crowded with flower wreaths, and thoroughly washed with fragrant water, the playhouse captured their thoughts.
प्रकीर्णकुसुमामोद मत्तालिकुलकूजितम्। किन्नरोद्गीतसंगीत गृहांतरितभित्तिकम्
Scattered with the fragrance of flowers, filled with the cooing of intoxicated bees, with walls echoing the songs sung by kinnara musicians.
सुगंधिधूपसंघातं मनःप्राप्यमलक्षितं। क्रीडामयूरनारीभिरभितो रभसार्पितं
Filled with the scent of fine incense, imperceptible to the mind's grasp, and surrounded on all sides by playful peahens and women moving swiftly.
