शंकरस्तमथाकर्ण्य मधुरं मदनाश्रयम्। सस्मार दक्षतनयां दयितां रंतुमानसः
Shankara, hearing that sweet sound belonging to Madana, remembered Daksha's daughter, his beloved, desiring pleasure.
ततः शिवस्य शनकैस्तिरोधा याति निर्मला। समाधिभावना तस्थौ लक्ष्य प्रत्यक्षरूपिणी
Then, the pure contemplation of Shiva gradually faded, remaining as the target, manifest in visible form.
ततस्तन्मयतां यातः प्रत्यूह पिहिताशयः। विवेश विबुधाधीशो विकृतिं मदनात्मिकाम्
Then, having become absorbed in that, with obstacles veiling his intent, the lord of the gods entered the distortion belonging to Madana.
ईषत्क्रोधसमाविष्टो धैर्यमालंब्य धूर्जटिः। निरस्यमदनंस्थित्वायोगमायासमावृतः
Slightly possessed by anger, Dhūrjaṭi, relying on fortitude, dismissed Madana and remained, enveloped in the effort of yoga.
स तया माययाविष्टो जज्वाल मदनस्ततः। इच्छाशरीरो दुर्ज्ञेयो दोषावासो महाशयः
Then, possessed by that illusion, Madana blazed forth—his form born of desire, difficult to comprehend, dwelling in faults, of great intent.
हृदयान्निर्गतः सोथ वासनाव्यसनात्मकः। बहिस्थलं समासाद्य उपतस्थे झषध्वजः
He emerged from the heart, embodying the addiction to longing, and, reaching the outer ground, the Fish-bannered one took his stand.
अनुयातो हि साह्येन मित्रेण मधुना सह। सहकारतरोर्दृष्ट्वा मंदमारुतनिर्धुतं
He was followed by Sāhya, his friend, together with Madhu; and seeing a cluster of mango blossoms swayed by a gentle breeze—
स्तबकं मदनो रम्यं हरवक्षसि सत्वरं। मुमोच मोहनं नाम मार्गणं मकरध्वजः
Madana, the Makara-bannered god, swiftly released upon Hara’s chest a charming cluster, a bewildering arrow named Mohana.
स तस्य हृदये शुद्धे नामशाली महाशरः। पपात परुषः प्रांशुः पुष्पबाणो विमोहनः
That great, renowned, and formidable flower-arrow, called Vimohana, fell harshly and tall into his pure heart.
ततः करणसंदोहे विद्धे तु हृदये भवः। बभूव भूतपो कंप्य धैर्योपि मदनोन्मुखः
Then, when his heart was pierced among the assembly of his senses, Bhava, the lord of beings, even in his steadfastness, became shaken and inclined toward Madana.
ततः प्रभुत्वाद्भावानामावेशं स्वमपश्यत। वाक्यं बहु बभाषेथ प्रत्यूहप्रसवात्मकं
Then, perceiving the overwhelming surge of emotions, he saw his own possession and spoke many words, all arising from the obstruction of his purpose.
ततः कोपानलोद्भूत घोर हुंकारभीषणे। बभूव वदने नेत्रं तृतीयमनलाकुलं
Then, from the fire of his anger, a terrible, fearsome roar arose; on his face appeared a third eye, blazing with flames.
रुद्रस्य रौद्रवपुषो जगत्संहारभैरवम्। तदंतिकस्थे मदने व्यस्फारयत धूर्जटिः
Rudra, in his fierce form, terrifying as the destroyer of worlds, opened that third eye near Madana.
तन्नेत्रविस्फुलिंगेन क्रोशतां नाकवासिनाम्। गमितो भस्मतां तूर्णं कंदर्पः कामदर्पकः
From the spark of that eye, while the dwellers of heaven cried out, Kāmadeva, the subduer of pride, was instantly reduced to ashes.
स तु तं भस्मसात्कृत्वा हरनेत्रोद्भवोनलः। व्यजृंभत जगद्दग्धुं ज्ञात्वा हुंकारघस्मरं
Having thus turned him to ashes, the fire born from Hara’s eye expanded, intending to burn the world, knowing the consuming power of that roar.
ततो भवो जगद्धेतोर्व्यभजज्जातवेदसम्। सहकारे मधौ चन्द्रे सुमनः स्स्वपरेष्वपि
Then, for the sake of the world, Bhava divided that fire: into the mango tree, the spring, the moon, flowers, and others as well.
भृंगेषु कोकिलास्ये च विभागेन स्मरानलं। स बाह्याभ्यंतरे विद्धो हरोथ स्मरमार्गणैः
He apportioned the fire of desire among bees, the mouths of cuckoos, and in various ways; thus, Hara himself was pierced both outwardly and inwardly by the arrows of love.
भागेष्वेतेषु संविष्टं वीक्षती बहुनाशनं। विभक्तं लोकसंक्षोभकरं दुर्वारजृंभितं
Seeing it established in these forms, devouring many, divided, agitating the worlds, and swelling beyond restraint—
तत्प्राप्तिस्नेहसंपूर्णकामेन हृदये किल। ज्वलन्नहर्निशं भीमो दुःखस्य वशगोऽभवत्
With his heart filled by the longing for union and the affection that came with it, he burned day and night, terrible, and became subject to suffering.
विलोक्य हरहुंकार ज्वालाभस्मीकृतं स्मरं। विललाप रतिः क्रूरं बंधुना मधुना सह
Seeing Smara reduced to ashes by the flame of Hara’s roar, Rati, together with her companion Madhu, wept bitterly.
ततो विलप्य बहुशो मधुना परिसांत्विता। जगाम शरणं देवमिंदुमौलित्रिलोचनं
Then, lamenting greatly and comforted by Madhu, she sought refuge with the god whose eye bears the moon.
भृंगानुयातां संगृह्य पुष्पितां सहकारजां। लतां पत्रद्रुमच्छन्नां जातां परभृतां सखीं 1.43.
Taking a blossoming mango creeper, followed by bees, covered by leaves and trees, she became a companion to the cuckoo.
निबध्य तु जटाजूटं कुटिलैरलकै रतिः। उद्वर्त्य गात्रं शुभ्रेण हृद्येन स्मरभस्मना
Rati, binding her matted hair with curling locks, anointed her body with the pure and fragrant ashes of desire.
जानुभ्यामवनिं गत्वा प्रोवाचेन्दुविभूषणम्। रतिरुवाच। नमः शिवायास्तु मनोमयाय जगन्मयायाद्भुतवर्त्मने नमः
Having gone to the ground on her knees, she addressed the moon-adorned one; Rati spoke: Salutations to Shiva, the one made of mind, the one who encompasses the universe, whose path is wondrous—salutations.
नमः शिवायास्तु सुरार्चिताय तुभ्यं सदा भक्तकृपापराय। नमो भवायास्तु भवोद्भवाय नमोस्तु ते ध्वस्तमनोभवाय
Salutations to Shiva, ever worshipped by the gods, ever supreme in compassion for devotees; salutations to Bhava, origin of existence; salutations to you, destroyer of desire.
नमोस्तु मायामदनाश्रयाय नमो निसर्गामलभूषिताय। नमोस्त्वमेयाय गुणायनाय नमोस्तु सिद्धाय पुरातनाय
Salutations to the one who is the refuge of Maya and of Madana; salutations to the one adorned with natural purity; salutations to the immeasurable, the abode of virtues; salutations to the accomplished, the ancient one.
नमः शरण्याय नमो गुणाय नमोस्तु ते भीमगणानुगाय। नमोस्तु नानाभुवनर्द्धिकर्त्रे नमोस्तु भक्ताभिमतप्रदाय
Salutations to the one who is the refuge, salutations to virtue, salutations to you who is followed by the fierce hosts; salutations to the creator of the prosperity of many worlds; salutations to the giver of devotees' desires.
नमोथ कर्मप्रसवे नमः सदा अनंतरूपाय सदैव तुभ्यम्। असह्यकोपाय सदैव तुभ्यं शशांकचिह्नाय नमोस्तु तुभ्यम्
Salutations to the originator of action, salutations always to you of infinite forms; salutations always to you of irresistible wrath; salutations to you marked by the moon.
असीमलीलापरमस्तुताय वृषेंद्रयानाय पुरांतकाय। नमः प्रसिद्धाय महौषधाय नमोस्तु नानाविधरूपकाय
Salutations to you, praised for boundless play, who rides the bull, who destroyed the cities; salutations to the renowned, the great medicine, salutations to you of manifold forms.
नमोस्तु कालाय नमः कलाय नमोस्तु ते कालकलातिगाय। चराचराचार्यविचार्यवर्यमाचार्यमुत्प्रेक्षितभूतसर्गं
Salutations to Time, salutations to Art, salutations to you who transcends both Time and Art; the foremost teacher, revered among moving and unmoving beings, who contemplates the creation of creatures.
