Desire steals away even the wise, due to the longing for results; for women, the highest birth in noble families is twofold in nature.
Here and hereafter, happiness is said to come from obtaining a worthy husband; but because it is so rare for women, even a husband lacking in virtue is considered a blessing.
A husband is never obtained by a woman without merit; for dharma is without means, and affection arises from its result.
Wealth remains with a woman only as long as her husband lives; but one who is poor, ill-favored, foolish, and lacking all marks—
The husband is always said to be the highest deity for a woman; but as you, O sage among the gods, have said, she has not yet obtained a husband.
This misfortune is incomparable, countless, and hard to bear; in the creation of moving and unmoving beings, this anxiety pervades, O sage.
Hearing that he is not born, my mind is troubled by this; it reveals the auspicious and inauspicious among humans and gods.
A mark is indeed prescribed on the hands and feet; this, you have said, O best of sages, is called 'upraised hands.'
'Upraised hands' is said to belong always to those who beg; never to those who are fortunate and blessed with auspicious rise, who do not give.
You have said her feet have a good shadow, but are unchaste; even there, O sage, no hope of good appears to us.
Other bodily marks indicate different results; thus, when the sorrowful Mountain ceased speaking—
Then Nārada, honored by the gods, spoke with a smile: 'You speak of sorrow where there is great cause for joy.'
You fall into delusion, O great mountain, because the meaning of the words is not limited; hear from me this teaching, established in secret.
O great mountain, consider carefully what I have said; the goddess has not yet obtained a husband, as I have told you, Himācala.
He is not yet born—the great god, source of past, present, and future; the refuge, eternal, the teacher, Śaṃkara, the supreme lord.
Brahmā, Rudra, Indra, and the sages, afflicted by birth, pregnancy, and old age—all are but playthings of that supreme lord, O mountain.
The lord of the worlds arises from the cosmic egg by his own will; O mountain, there is no destruction for him, even at the end of the immovables.
For the embodied being born and dying in the world, only the body perishes here; there is no destruction for the self.
This world, from Brahmā down to the immovables, is said to be afflicted by the pain of birth and death, and turns ceaselessly.
The great god is unmoving, steadfast, unborn, the father, ageless; he will be her husband, the lord of the world, free from affliction.
And what I said, O Goddess, that she is without marks—listen now to the proper explanation of that statement.
A mark is a divine sign, based in the limbs of the body, and it reveals the outcome of lifespan, wealth, and fortune.
But for infinite, immeasurable fortune, O mountain, no such mark or sign is established in the body.
Therefore, O wise one, there is no mark on her body; and as for what I said about her hand always being open upward—
This upturned hand of the Goddess is ever bestowing boons; she will be the granter of wishes to hosts of gods, asuras, and sages.
And as for what I said about her feet being radiant and variable—hear now my explanation of that as well, O best of mountains.
Her feet are like lotuses, shining with clear nails, reflecting the brilliant jewels of the crowns of gods and asuras who bow before her.
Gazing at her, with their many-colored crowns, they see her radiant feet reflected; she is the wife of the Lord of the universe, the bull-bannered one, O mountain.
She is the mother of all worlds, the source of what has been, is, and will be; this Śivā has appeared in your land, O purifier, for the sake of sanctity.
Therefore, let her quickly be united with Pinākin in proper form, O best of mountains, as it should be done.
