The daughter of Himācalā will become a goddess; from her, a son will be born, like fire from the forest.
She will give birth to him, and upon his arrival, Tāraka will cease to exist; I have explained the means by which this will happen.
Now divide the remaining wealth of his power among yourselves; wait a little while with undisturbed minds.
Thus addressed by the lotus-born one, the gods departed after bowing to the lord, each according to their rank.
When the gods had departed, Brahmā, the Grandfather of the worlds, remembered that goddess of the night, who had existed from the beginning.
Then the blessed Night herself approached the Grandfather; seeing her alone, Brahmā addressed the radiant goddess.
Brahmā said: O radiant one, a great task has arisen for the gods; you must accomplish it, O goddess. Listen to the determination regarding this task.
There is a demon king named Tāraka, unconquered enemy of the gods; for his destruction, the blessed Lord will beget a son.
That son will indeed become the slayer of Tāraka; Śaṅkara’s wife, who was Satī, daughter of Dakṣa,
That goddess, angered at her father for some other reason, will be born as the daughter of Himavat, destined for the world’s welfare.
Separated from her, Hara will consider the three worlds empty; he will dwell for a time in a cave of Himavat, attended by siddhas.
Awaiting her birth, he will remain there for some time; from their intense austerities, a great son will be born.
He will become the destroyer of the demon Tāraka; and that goddess, though just born, will appear only faintly conscious, O radiant one.
Longing deeply in separation, yearning for union with Hara, the union of those two, purified by austerity, will bring auspiciousness.
If a child is born to them, even a slight quarrel of words may arise; then, greater doubt regarding Tāraka will be seen.
Therefore, when those two are united, for the sake of their attachment to pleasure, you must create an obstacle; listen to how this should be done.
While she is pregnant, you must enter the mother in your own form, causing her to lose consciousness; then Śarva, smiling, will gently tease her in jest, though troubled.
He will scold that goddess, and Satī, angered, will depart to perform austerities; thus, endowed with penance,
She will give birth to Śarva’s son, radiant with immeasurable splendor; he will certainly become the slayer of the enemies of the gods.
You too, O goddess, must slay the formidable demons, unconquerable in the world, until the goddess of the gods, endowed with all virtues, assumes a body.
Until that union, you will not be able to slay the demons; when this is done and you have performed austerity, you will accomplish everything.
O goddess, when your vows are complete and Umā is manifest, then Śailajā will regain her own true form.
Then, Bhavani will be united with you as well; joined by a portion of Uma's form, you will become her.
The world will worship you, O giver of boons, as Ekansha, with many forms and diverse appearances, fulfilling all desires.
The learned in Brahman will call you Gayatri, whose face is Omkara; you will be honored by mighty kings of great strength.
You are called Bhumi, mother of the people, worshipped as Shaivi by the Shudras; you are for the sages patience, unshakable, and for the disciplined, compassion.
You are the great means and the doubt of those who seek methods; you are policy for those who discern right and wrong; you are discernment among objects, and you are striving, the longing in the hearts of living beings.
You are liberation for all beings, you are the path for all embodied souls; you are delight for those whose minds are set on pleasure, and you are affection in the hearts of the living.
You are fame for those who are true, you are peace for those with evil deeds; you are delusion for all beings, and you are the goal for those who perform sacrifices.
You are the great shore of the oceans, and you delight in play; you are the night, bestowing the embrace of beloved throats.
