स ताड्यमानोऽतिबलैर्दैत्यैः सर्वायुधोद्यतैः। न चचाल ततो युद्धे कंप्यमान इवाचलः
Though struck by the mighty Daityas, who were armed with all kinds of weapons, he did not move from his place in the fight, like a mountain shaken but unmoved.
संयुक्तश्च सुपर्णेन कालनेमिर्महासुरः। सर्वप्राणेन महतीं गदामुद्यम्य बाहुभिः
Kālanemi, the great Asura, joined by Suparṇa, with all his strength, raised a massive mace with his arms.
घोरां ज्वलंतीं मुमुचे संरब्धो गरुडोपरि। कर्मणा तेन दैत्यस्य विष्णुर्विस्मयमागमत्
In fury, he hurled the blazing, terrible mace at Garuḍa; by this act of the Daitya, Viṣṇu was filled with wonder.
तदा तेन सुपर्णस्य पातिता मूर्ध्नि सा गदा। सुपर्णं व्यथितं दृष्ट्वा क्षतं च वपुरात्मनः
Then that mace, cast by Suparṇa, struck his head; seeing Suparṇa afflicted and his own body wounded—
क्रोधसंरक्तनयनो वैकुंठश्चक्रमाददे। व्यवर्द्धत च वेगेन सुपर्णेन समं विभुः
Vaikuṇṭha, his eyes bloodshot with wrath, took up the discus; together with Suparṇa, the mighty one increased in speed.
भुजाश्चास्य व्यवर्धंत व्याप्तवंतो दिशो दश। विदिशश्चैव खं चापि गां चैव प्रतिपूरयन्
His arms grew, spreading to the ten directions, filling the intermediate quarters, the sky, and the earth.
ववृधे स पुनर्लोकान्क्रांतुकाम इवौजसा। तं जयाय सुरेंद्राणां वर्द्धमानं नभस्तले
He grew again in might, as if wishing to stride across the worlds; as he increased in the sky for the victory of the lords of the gods—
ॠषयः सह गंधर्वास्तुष्टुवुर्मधुसूदनम्। सद्यां किरीटेन लिखन्शिरसा भास्वरेण च
The sages, along with the Gandharvas, praised Madhusūdana, as he inscribed the heavens with his shining crown and head.
पद्भ्यामाक्रम्यवसुधां दिशः प्रच्छाद्य बाहुभिः। सहस्रकरतुल्याभं सहस्रारमरिक्षयम्
Pressing the earth with his feet, covering the directions with his arms, he appeared like one with a thousand arms and a thousand eyes, indestructible among enemies.
दीप्ताग्निसदृशं घोरंदर्शनेन सुदर्शनम्। सुवर्णरेणुपर्यंतं वज्रनाभं भयावहं
The Sudarśana discus, blazing like fire, terrifying in appearance, covered with golden dust, with a diamond-like navel, inspiring fear—
मेदोस्थिमज्जरुधिरैः सिक्तं दानवसंभवैः। अद्वितीयं प्रहरणं क्षुरपर्यंतमंडलम्
Moistened with marrow, bone, fat, and blood from the Dānavas, that peerless weapon, with a razor-sharp edge and circular form—
स्रग्दाममालानिचितं कामगं कामरूपिणं। स्वयं स्वयंभुवा सृष्टं भयदं सर्वविद्विषाम्
Adorned with garlands and wreaths, desired by those who can assume any form, created by Svayambhū himself, it brings terror to all haters.
दधार रोषेणाविष्टं नित्यमाहवदर्पितं। क्षेपणाद्यस्य मुह्यंति लोकाः सस्थाणुजंगमाः
He held it, possessed by wrath, always intent on battle; at its casting, all beings—moving and unmoving—are bewildered.
क्रव्यादानि च भूतानि तृप्तिं यांति महामृधे। तमप्रतिमकर्माणं समानं सूर्यवर्चसा
Even the flesh-eating beings are satisfied in the great conflict; he, whose deeds are unrivaled, is equal to the brilliance of the sun.
चक्रमुद्यम्य समरे कोपदीप्तो गदाधरः। प्रणष्टं दानवं तेजः कुर्वाणं स्वेन तेजसा
Raising the discus in battle, blazing with anger, the wielder of the mace diminished the radiance of the Dānava with his own brilliance.
चिच्छेद बाहूंस्तेनैव समरे कालनेमिनः। तच्च वक्त्रशतं घोरं साग्निचूर्णाट्टहासि वै
With that very discus, he cut off the arms of Kālanemi in battle; and that ghastly hundred-faced head, with fiery, powdered laughter—
तस्य दैत्यस्य चक्रेण प्रममाथ बलाद्धरिः। सच्छिन्नबाहुर्विशिरानप्राकंपत दानवः
Hari forcefully struck down that demon with his discus; his arm severed, his head cut off, the Daitya trembled.
कबंधावस्थितः संख्ये विशाखइव पादपः। तंवितत्य महापक्षौ वायोः कृत्वा समं जवम्
In the battle, he stood like a headless trunk, resembling a tree struck by lightning; spreading his great wings, Garuda matched the speed of the wind.
उरसा ताडयामास गरुडः कालनेमिनं। स तस्य देहोभिमुखो विबाहुः खात्परिभ्रमन्
Garuda struck Kālanemi on the chest; that demon, arms flailing, whirled through the sky facing his own body.
निपपात दिवं त्यक्त्वा क्षोभयन्धरणीतलम्। तस्मिन्निपतिते दैत्ये देवाः सर्षिगणास्तथा
Abandoning the heavens, he fell to the earth, shaking the ground; as that Daitya fell, the gods and the hosts of seers likewise—
साधुसाध्विति वैकुंठं समेताः प्रत्यपूजयन्। अपरे ये तु दैत्या वै युद्धे दृष्टपराक्रमाः
All gathered and worshipped Vaikuṇṭha, exclaiming, 'Well done! Well done!' But the other Daityas, who had witnessed the valor in battle—
ते सर्वे बाहुभिर्व्याप्ता न शेकुश्चलितुं रणे। कांश्चित्केशेषु जग्राह कांश्चित्कंठेष्वपीडयत्
All of them, their arms entangled, could not move on the battlefield; some seized others by the hair, some pressed at their throats.
चकर्त कस्यचिद्वक्त्रं मध्ये गृह्णात्तथापरम्। ते गदाचक्रनिर्दग्धा गतसत्वा गतासवः
He cut off the face of one, seized another in the midst; scorched by mace and discus, their strength and life departed.
गगनाद्भ्रष्टसर्वांगा निपेतुर्धरणीतले। तेषु सर्वेषु दैत्येषु हतेषु पुरुषोत्तमः
Their bodies, fallen from the sky, crashed to the earth; when all those Daityas were slain, the Supreme Person—
शक्रप्रियं ततः कृत्वा कृतकर्मगदाधरः। तस्मिन्विमर्दे संवृत्ते संग्रामे तारकामये
Having accomplished the beloved task of Indra, holding his completed weapon, Gadā, in that fierce battle of Tāraka—
तं च देशं जगामाशु ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः। सर्वैर्ब्रह्मर्षिभिः सार्द्धं गंधर्वाप्सरसांगणैः
Then Brahmā, the grandsire of the worlds, swiftly came to that place, together with all the Brahmarṣis and the hosts of Gandharvas and Apsarases.
देवदेवं हरिं देवः पूजयन्वाक्यमब्रवीत्। कृतं देव महत्कर्म सुराणां शल्यमुद्धृतम्
The god Brahmā, worshipping Hari, the god of gods, spoke these words: 'O god, a great deed has been accomplished; the thorn of the gods has been removed.'
निधनेन च दैत्यानां वयं च परितोषिताः। योऽयं त्वया हतो विष्णो कालनेमिर्महासुरः
'By the destruction of the Daityas, we are all satisfied; this Kālanemi, the great Asura, whom you have slain, O Viṣṇu—'
त्वामेतस्य ॠते ह्यस्मिन्शास्ता कश्चिन्न विद्यते। एष देवान्परिभवन्लोकांश्च सचराचरान्
'Except for you, no one could have been his vanquisher in this world; he insulted the gods and all the worlds, both moving and unmoving.'
ॠषीणां कदनं कृत्वा मामपि प्रतिगर्जति। तदनेन त्वदीयेन परितुष्टोस्मि कर्मणा
'Having slaughtered the seers, he even challenged me; therefore, by this act of yours, I am well pleased.'
