Taking refuge in its shade, the gods, standing at the forefront of the sacrifice, partake of the ghee offered thrice by the great sages.
This indeed is the cause of destruction for all the enemies of the immortals; into this wheel have entered the lineages of our foes in battle.
This is truly he who, in battles, for the sake of the gods, has given up his life; that mighty one, endowed with brilliance, hurls the discus at the enemies.
This is the very Time for the daityas, now that I, the embodiment of Time, am present; when the destined time has passed, Keśava will obtain the result.
By fate, now before my eyes, this Viṣṇu has arrived; crushed by me in battle, he will perish here itself.
By fortune, today in this combat, I shall fulfill the duty owed to my predecessors, by slaying this Nārāyaṇa, the terror of the Dānavas.
Very soon I will slay the hosts of gods in battle; even when he takes other births, this one troubles the Dānavas in combat.
This is the same Ananta, once known as Padmanābha, who, in the dreadful primeval ocean, slew both Madhu and Kaiṭabha.
Assuming a form split in two, half lion and half man, he alone once slew my father Hiraṇyakaśipu.
Aditi, the mother of the gods, bore him as an auspicious embryo; he alone, with three strides, seized the three worlds.
Now again, as the Tārakāmaya battle approaches, that god, meeting me, will be destroyed.
Having spoken thus in many ways, he quickly challenged Nārāyaṇa to battle with words that were harsh and unfitting.
Though provoked by the lord of the Asuras, the wielder of the mace did not become angry; with great strength of forbearance, he smiled and spoke these words:
Your strength, O Daitya, is slight and born of arrogance; true strength is steady and free from anger. You are slain by faults arising from pride, yet you speak of forbearance.
You are deemed base by me; shame on your boastful words. What men are there, where women roar?
I see you, O Daitya, following the path of your forebears; who, abandoning the bridge built by the Lord of Creatures, can attain well-being?
Today I will destroy you, the slayer of the gods' works, and restore the deities to their own places.
As the bearer of the Śrīvatsa mark spoke thus in battle, the Dānava laughed in anger and raised his weapon-bearing hands with the discus.
He, raising a hundred arms and all his weapons in battle, with eyes reddened doubly by anger, hurled them at the chest of Viṣṇu.
And the Dānavas too, led by Maya and Tāra, with weapons and swords raised, charged at Viṣṇu in the battle.
Though struck by the mighty Daityas, who were armed with all kinds of weapons, he did not move from his place in the fight, like a mountain shaken but unmoved.
Kālanemi, the great Asura, joined by Suparṇa, with all his strength, raised a massive mace with his arms.
In fury, he hurled the blazing, terrible mace at Garuḍa; by this act of the Daitya, Viṣṇu was filled with wonder.
Then that mace, cast by Suparṇa, struck his head; seeing Suparṇa afflicted and his own body wounded—
Vaikuṇṭha, his eyes bloodshot with wrath, took up the discus; together with Suparṇa, the mighty one increased in speed.
His arms grew, spreading to the ten directions, filling the intermediate quarters, the sky, and the earth.
He grew again in might, as if wishing to stride across the worlds; as he increased in the sky for the victory of the lords of the gods—
The sages, along with the Gandharvas, praised Madhusūdana, as he inscribed the heavens with his shining crown and head.
Pressing the earth with his feet, covering the directions with his arms, he appeared like one with a thousand arms and a thousand eyes, indestructible among enemies.
The Sudarśana discus, blazing like fire, terrifying in appearance, covered with golden dust, with a diamond-like navel, inspiring fear—
