तिर्यगूर्ध्वं च गगने ववृधुस्तस्य बाहवः। पर्वतादिव निष्क्रांताः पंचास्या इव पन्नगाः
His arms grew upward and outward in the sky, like serpents with five mouths emerging from a mountain.
सोऽस्त्रजालैर्बहुविधैर्धनुर्भिः परिघैरपि। दिव्यमाकाशमावव्रे पर्वतैरुच्छ्रितैरिव
With many kinds of missile-nets, bows, and iron clubs, he covered the divine sky as if with towering mountains.
सोनिलोद्भूतवसनस्तस्थौ संग्रामलालसः। संध्यातपग्रस्तशिलः साक्षान्मेरुरिवाचलः
Clad in wind-blown garments, eager for battle, he stood like the mountain Meru itself, its rocks consumed by the rays of dusk.
ऊरुवेगप्रमथितैः शृंगशैलाग्रपादपैः। अपातयद्देवगणान्वज्रेणेव महागिरीन्
With mountain peaks, summits, and trees torn up by the force of his thighs, he struck down the hosts of gods as if with a thunderbolt.
बाहुभिश्च सनिस्त्रिंशैश्छिन्नभिन्नशिरोरुहाः। न शेकुश्चलितुं देवाः कालनेमिहता युधि
Struck and wounded by his sword-bearing arms, the gods, their hair cut and bodies broken, could not move in battle, defeated by Kālanemi.
मुष्टिभिर्निहताः केचित्केचिच्च द्विदलीकृताः। यक्षगंधर्वपतगाः समहोरगकिन्नराः
Some yakṣas, gandharvas, birds, serpents, and kinnaras were struck down by his fists, others were split in two.
तेन वित्रासिताः पेतुः समरे कालनेमिना। न शेकुर्यत्नवंतोपि यत्नं कर्तुं विचेतसः
Terrified by Kālanemi, they fell in battle; though they tried with all their effort, their minds were bewildered and they could do nothing.
तेन शक्रः सहस्राक्षोऽस्पंदितः शरबंधनैः। निष्प्रयत्नः कृतः संख्ये चलितुं न शशाक ह
By him, Indra, the thousand-eyed, was bound with arrow-fetters, rendered powerless in the fight, unable to move.
निर्जलांभोदसदृशो निर्जलार्णवसप्रभः। निर्व्यापारः कृतस्तेन विपाशो वरुणो मृधे
Varuṇa, lord of the waters, was made inactive by him in battle, like a cloud without water or a sea without moisture.
रणे वैश्रवणस्तेन परीतः कालरूपिणा। विलपन्लोकपालेशस्त्याजितो धनदः क्रियां
Vaiśravaṇa, lord of wealth, surrounded in battle by that form of death, lamented and was driven from his duties as guardian of the world.
यमः सर्वहरस्तेन मृत्युप्रहरणो रणे। याम्यामवस्थां संत्यज्य भीतः स्वां दिशमाविशत्
Yama, the taker of all, armed with the weapons of death, abandoned his own realm in fear and fled to his direction.
सलोकपालानुत्सार्य हृत्वा तेषां च कर्म तत्। दिक्षु सर्वासु देहं स्वं चतुर्धा विदधे तदा
Driving away the guardians of the worlds and seizing their duties, he then divided his own body into four parts in all directions.
स नक्षत्रपथं गत्वा दिव्यं स्वर्भानुदर्शितं। जहार लक्ष्मीं सोमस्य यच्चास्य विषयं महत्
He went to the path of the stars, that divine realm revealed by Svarbhanu, and seized the fortune of Soma, along with his vast domain.
चालयामास दीप्तांशुं धर्मद्वारा सभास्करं। शासनं चास्य विषयं जहार दिनकर्म च
He shook the radiant Sun, together with the gateway of righteousness, and took away his authority, his domain, and the function of day.
सोग्निं देवमुखं जित्वा चकारात्ममुखाश्रयं। वायुं च तरसा जित्वा चकारात्मवशानुगं
Having conquered Agni, the mouth of the gods, he made him subject to his own will; and having overpowered Vayu with force, he made him obedient to himself.
स समुद्रात्समानीय समस्ताः सरितो बलात्। चकाराभिसुखावीर्या देहभूताश्च सिंधवः
He brought forth by force all the rivers from the ocean, and made the seas, which are the essence of bodies, serve his pleasure and strength.
अपः स्ववशगाः कृत्वा दिविजायाश्च भूमिजाः। छादयामास जगतीं सुगुप्तां धरणीधरैः
Having made the waters, both celestial and terrestrial, subject to his own command, he covered the earth, well protected by mountains.
स स्वयंभूरिवाभाति महाभूतपतिर्महान्। सर्वलोकमयो दैत्यः सर्वलोकभयावहः
That self-born one shone forth as the great lord of the elements, the mighty demon who pervades all worlds and brings fear to all beings.
स लोकपालैकवपुश्चंद्रसूर्यग्रहात्मवान्। पावकानिलसंभूतो रराज युधि दानवः
That demon, embodying the forms of the guardians of the worlds, the Moon, the Sun, and the planets, born of fire and wind, shone in battle.
पारमेष्ठ्ये स्थितः स्थाने लोकानां प्रभवोपमे। तं तुष्टुवुर्दैत्यगणा देवा इव पितामहं
Standing in the supreme seat of Brahma, equal to the origin of the worlds, the hosts of demons praised him as the gods praise the Grandfather.
पंच तं नाभ्यवर्तंत विपरीतेन कर्मणा। वेदो धर्मः क्षमा सत्यं श्रीश्च नारायणाश्रया
But five—Veda, Dharma, Forbearance, Truth, and Fortune, all dependent on Narayana—did not approach him, acting contrary to his deeds.
स तेषामनुपस्थानात्सक्रोधो दानवेश्वरः। वैष्णवं पदमन्विच्छन्स गतो देवतायतः
Because they did not come to him, the lord of the demons, filled with anger, seeking the abode of Vishnu, went to the dwelling of the gods.
स ददर्श सुपर्णस्थं शंखचक्रगदाधरं। दानवानां विनाशाय भ्रामयंतं गदां शुभां
There he saw Vishnu, seated upon Garuda, holding conch, discus, and mace, whirling his auspicious mace for the destruction of the demons.
सजलांभोदसदृशं विद्युत्सदृशवाससं। आरूढं स्वर्णपत्राढ्यं खेचरं काश्यपं खगं
Clad in garments like lightning, resembling a rain-filled cloud, mounted on the golden-feathered bird of Kashyapa's line, moving through the sky.
दुष्टदैत्यविनाशाय दृष्ट्वा खस्थमिवस्थितं। दानवो विष्णुमक्षोभ्यं बभाषे क्षुब्धमानसः
Seeing Vishnu, standing in the sky for the destruction of wicked demons, the demon, his mind agitated, spoke to the unshakable Vishnu.
अयं स रिपुरस्माकं पूर्वेषां प्राणनाशनः। अर्णवावासिनश्चैव मधोश्च कैटभस्य च
This is that enemy of ours, the destroyer of the lives of our forebears, of those dwelling in the ocean, and of Madhu and Kaitabha.
अयं स रिपुरस्माकमसमः किल कथ्यते। अनेकसंयुगेनेन दानवा बहवो हताः
This is that enemy of ours, said to be unequalled; in many battles, he has slain numerous demons.
अयं स निर्घृणो लोके स्त्रीबालनिरपत्त्रपः। येन दानवनारीणां सीमंतोद्वरणं कृतम्
This is that merciless one in the world, unashamed before women and children, by whom the boundary and selection of demon women was made.
अयं स विष्णुर्देवानां वैकुंठश्च दिवौकसाम्। अनंतो भोगिनां मध्ये स्वयंभूश्च स्वयंभुवः
This is that Vishnu of the gods, Vaikuntha of the dwellers in heaven, Ananta among the serpents, and the self-born among the self-born.
अयं स नाथो देवानामस्माभिर्विप्रकृष्यते। अस्य क्रोधं समासाद्य हिरण्यकशिपुर्हतः
This is that lord of the gods, whom we have offended; encountering his wrath, even Hiranyakashipu was slain.
