The accomplished dānavas advanced toward the fierce Kālanemi, armed with heavy maces, discs, axes, and clubs.
With pestles like the rod of Time, throwing hammers, mallets, stones like missiles, and fearsome mountains.
With spears, slings, iron bars of the finest make, deadly and weighty weapons, and also with shataghnis.
With yokes and engines hurling missiles, ploughs striking fiercely, with outstretched arms, nooses, and iron rods.
With arrows like serpents' mouths, licking and darting, with thunderbolts, and blazing spears as weapons.
With sharp, unsheathed swords, pure and keen spears, the daityas blazed forth, grasping their bows and arrows.
Then, with Kālanemi at their forefront in the battle, that host of Daityas, adorned with blazing weapons, shone brilliantly.
By whom, with all their limbs closed, as a forest at the coming of rain, even the army of the gods, protected by Indra, rejoiced.
Endowed with the coolness and heat of the moon and sun, swift as the wind, gentle, and bearing the banners of the stars.
Clad in clouds as garments, shining with planets and constellations, guarded by Yama, Indra, Kubera, and the wise Varuṇa.
That great army, blazing with fire and wind, devoted to Nārāyaṇa, resembled a flood of oceans, shining forth.
Terrible, armed with weapons, resplendent with Yakṣas and Gandharvas, that army then met the other in battle.
Just as earth and sky unite at the end of an age, so that battle became fierce, filled with gods and Dānavas.
Intent on endurance and valor, destroyers of pride and arrogance, the gods and Asuras, mighty and terrible, advanced to fight.
Excited, like clouds by the eastern and western oceans, the gods and Dānavas, delighted by their own strength, moved forth.
Just as trees in the mountains blossom in the forests, so they struck drums and blew conches repeatedly.
They filled the universe, the earth, and all directions with sound—the twang of bowstrings and the cries of bows.
The deep roar of drums drowned out the Daityas' own voices; they rushed at each other, attacking one another.
Some broke arms with arms, eager for hand-to-hand combat; the gods hurled dreadful thunderbolts and mighty clubs.
The Dānavas released swords in battle and heavy maces; struck by maces and shattered by arrows, bodies were broken apart.
Some fell heavily, while others were slain; then, with chariots, horses, flying vehicles, and foot soldiers,
They, enraged, rushed at each other in battle, grinding their teeth, faces contorted in fury as the conflict intensified.
Chariots fought with chariots, foot soldiers with foot soldiers; the tumult of those chariots, resounding with noise, was immense.
The sky echoed as if with the thunder of clouds; some chariots were broken, others crushed by chariots.
The chariots, crowded together, could not move; in the midst of battle, warriors, baring their teeth, seized each other by the arms.
Some, armed with swords and shields, struck with a roar; others, pierced by weapons, fell bleeding, slain in the fight.
Gathered like rain clouds heavy with water, they made the day of battle dark, as each showered arrows upon the other.
Meanwhile, the demon Kālanemi, enraged, swelled like a cloud being filled by surging waves of the sea.
From his body, vast as mountains, blazing clouds fell, flashing with lightning and pouring down thunderbolts.
As he breathed in anger, sweat rained from his furrowed brow, and from his mouth streamed flames thick with sparks.
