Where are wives, where is union, and where is the confusion of thoughts? Was not this mind-born progeny created by Brahmā through his mind?
If you, who have mastered yourselves, possess the power of austerity, then create mind-born sons through the act of a progenitor.
The womb created by the mind should be established by ascetics; not through union with a wife or seed, for such is the vow declared for ascetics.
This so-called lost dharma, which you have fearlessly declared here, is greatly approved by the good, but regarded as false by the unworthy.
Having made my form radiant within, composed of mind, I shall create a son from my own body, without union with a wife.
Thus, my own self will generate a second self, by the method of the progenitor, as if desiring to burn up the creatures.
Varuṇa said: Urva, possessed by austerity, was made to sit with her thigh in the sacrificial fire; with a single blade of darbha grass, he churned the place for the birth of a son.
Breaking open her thigh suddenly, that excellent fire arose—Agni, desiring to burn the world, became the son.
Splitting open Urva's thigh, the fire named Aurva, the fierce one, was born, as if wishing to burn the three worlds, exceedingly wrathful.
As he was being born, he spoke to his father in a plaintive voice: 'Hunger torments me, father. Let me consume the world.'
Blazing with flames reaching the heavens, spreading in all ten directions, burning all beings, he grew like the fire of destruction.
At that moment, Brahmā, the sage, approached Urva and said: 'Restrain your son for the sake of the world; show compassion.'
'O sage, I shall provide excellent support for this child. This word is true, O son; listen, best of speakers.'
Aurva said: 'I am blessed, I am favored, O Lord, that you grant this wisdom here for the welfare of my child, O Supreme Self.'
When the morning comes and the desired meeting takes place, O Lord, by what offerings will my son be satisfied and attain happiness?
And where will his dwelling be, and what will his food consist of? O Lord, you will surely arrange for him a sustenance equal to his great energy.
Brahma said: In the mouth of the submarine fire, there will be a dwelling in the ocean. O sage, my origin is water; let this immeasurable water go forth with you.
There, he remains constantly, drinking water as his offering. Therefore, O sage, I release this expanse of water and its abode.
Then, at the end of the age, O son, both I and this being will wander together here, making the world devoid of old things.
This fire, at the time of destruction, is made by me to consume water; it will burn all beings, including gods, asuras, and rakshasas.
So be it—thus that fire, its circle of flames concealed, entered the mouth of the ocean, bowing to its father, the lord.
Then Brahma departed, and all those great sages, knowing the power of Aurva's fire, each went to their own destination.
Hiranyakashipu, seeing that great and wondrous event, bowed with his whole body to Aurva and spoke these words.
O revered one, this marvelous thing has occurred before the world as witness. Through your austerity, O best of sages, the grandsire is pleased.
I must be understood as the servant of your son and of you, O great vow-holder; you are praiseworthy here for your deed.
Therefore, see me as devoted to your worship, absorbed in it; if I falter, O best of sages, let defeat be yours.
Aurva said: I am blessed and favored, since you regard me as your teacher. There is no fear for you here, O virtuous one, because of this austerity.
Take this very power, created by my son, difficult to touch even for flames, made of fire and destructive.
This will be subject to your lineage, for restraint; it will protect your own side and destroy the enemy side.
Varuna said: This power is hard to withstand, difficult even for the gods to approach; it was formerly created by Aurva, son of Urva, with fire.
