श्रिया जाज्वल्यमानेन दीप्यमानैश्च रश्मिभिः। उदयास्तमयौ चक्रे मेरुपर्यन्तगामिना
Blazing with splendor and shining rays, he made the circuit from sunrise to sunset, reaching to the ends of Mount Meru.
त्रिदिव द्वारचक्रेण तपसा लोकमव्ययम्। सहस्ररश्मियुक्तेन भ्राजमानेन तेजसा
With the triple-heaven's gate as his wheel, by his ascetic power he pervaded the imperishable world, joined by a thousand rays and shining with brilliance.
चचार मध्ये देवानां द्वादशात्मा दिवाकरः। सोमः श्वेतहयो भाति स्यंदने शीतरश्मिमान्
In the midst of the gods, the twelve-formed Sun moved about; Soma, with white horses, shines in his chariot, bearing cool rays.
हिमतोयप्रपूर्णाभिर्भाभिराह्लादयञ्जगत्। तमृक्षयोगानुगतं शिशिरांशुं द्विजेश्वरम्
With beams full like icy waters, he delights the world; that ruler of the twice-born, with cool rays, follows the conjunctions of the stars.
शशच्छायांकिततनुं नैशस्य तमसः क्षयम्। ज्योतिषामीश्वरं व्योम्नि रसदं प्रभुमव्ययम्
His body marked by the hare's shadow, he dispels the darkness of night; lord of the luminaries in the sky, he is the imperishable bestower of sap.
ओषधीनां पवित्राणां निधानममृतस्य च। जगतः परमं भागं सौम्यं सर्वमयं रसम्
He is the repository of pure herbs and of nectar; the supreme portion of the world, gentle, all-pervading essence.
ददृशुर्दानवाः सोमं हिमप्रहरणं स्थितम्। यः प्राणः सर्वभूतानां पंचधा भिद्यते नृषु
The Dānavas saw Soma, armed with frost, standing there—he who is the life of all beings and is divided fivefold among men.
सप्तस्कंधगतो लोकांस्त्रीन्दधार चकार च। यमाहुरग्निकर्त्तारं सर्वप्रभवमीश्वरम्
He, having seven branches, supports and creates the worlds; whom they call the maker of fire, the lord from whom all arises.
सप्तस्वरगता यस्य योनिर्गीर्भिरुदीर्यते। यं वदंति चलं भूतं यं वदंत्यशरीरिणम्
His origin is said to dwell in the seven notes; whom they call the moving being, whom they call bodiless.
यमाहुराकाशगमं शीघ्रगं शब्दयोनिजम्। स वायुः सर्वभूतायुरुद्धतः स्वेन तेजसा
Whom they say moves through space, swift, born of sound; that is Vāyu, the life of all beings, exalted by his own brilliance.
ववौ प्रव्यथयन्दैत्यान्प्रतिलोमं सतोयदः। मारुतो देवगंधर्वैर्विद्याधरगणैः सह
He blew, agitating the Daityas, against the current, with rain-bearing clouds; Māruta played together with the gods, Gandharvas, and hosts of Vidyādharas.
चिक्रीड रश्मिभिश्शुभ्रैर्निर्मुक्तैरिव पन्नगैः। सृजंतः सर्पपतयस्तीव्रं रोषमयं विषम्
He sported with bright rays, like serpents released; the lords of serpents emitted fierce, wrathful poison.
शरभूता विलग्नाश्च चेरुर्व्यात्तानना दिवि। पर्वताश्च शिलाशृंगैः शतशाखैश्च पादपैः
Beings in the form of arrows clung together, roaming the sky with gaping mouths; mountains, with rocky peaks, and trees with a hundred branches,
उपतस्थुः सुरगणान्प्रहर्तुं दानवं बलम्। यः स देवो हृषीकेशः पद्मनाभस्त्रिविक्रमः
Approached the hosts of gods to strike the army of Dānavas; that god is Hṛṣīkeśa, Padmanābha, the three-strider.
युगांते कृष्णवर्त्मा च विश्वस्य जगतः प्रभुः। सर्वयोनिः समधुहा हव्यभुक्क्रतुसंस्थितः
At the end of the age, the Lord of the universe, the path of Krishna, the source of all beings, who consumes the offerings and abides in sacrifice, was manifested.
भूम्यम्बुव्योमभूतात्मा श्यामः शांतिकरोरिहा। अविघ्नममरादीनां चक्रे चक्रगदाधरः
He, whose essence is earth, water, space, and the elements, dark-hued, bestower of peace here, the wielder of the discus and mace, made things free of obstacles for the immortals and others.
सव्येनालभ्य महतीं सर्वायुधविनाशिनीं। करेण कालीं वपुषा शत्रुकालप्रदां गदां
With his left hand he grasped the great mace, impossible to obtain, destroyer of all weapons, in the form of Kālī, the bringer of death to enemies.
शेषैर्भुजैः प्रदीप्ताभैर्भुजगारिध्वजः प्रभुः। दधारायुधजालानि शार्ङ्गादीनि महाबलः
With his other blazing arms, the Lord bearing the serpent-banner, of great might, held arrays of weapons such as the Sharnga bow.
स कश्यपस्यात्मभवं द्विजं भुजगभोजनम्। भुजगेंद्रेण वदने निविष्टेन विराजितम्
He, resplendent, bore the twice-born son of Kashyapa, destined as food for serpents, placed in the mouth of the king of serpents.
अमृतारंभसंयुक्तं मंदराद्रिमिवोच्छितम्। देवासुरविमर्देषु बहुशो दृष्टविक्रमम्
Joined with the nectar-waters, raised up like Mount Mandara, whose valor had been seen many times in the battles of gods and demons.
महेंद्रेणामृतस्यार्थे वज्रेण कृतलक्षणम्। विचित्रपत्रवसनं धातुमंतमिवाचलम्
Marked by the thunderbolt of Mahendra for the sake of the nectar, adorned with wondrous feathered garments, like a mountain rich in minerals.
स्फीतक्रोधावलंबेन शीतांशुसमतेजसा। भोगिभोगावसक्तेन मणिरत्नेन भास्वता
With swelling wrath as his support, radiance equal to the moon, adorned with a shining jewel attached to the coils of the serpent.
पक्षाभ्यां चारुपत्राभ्यामावृतं दिवि लीलया। युगांते सेंद्रचापाभ्यां तोयदाभ्यामिवांबरम्
Covered in the sky by his two beautiful, feathered wings in play, like the sky at the end of the age with Indra’s bows and clouds.
नीललोहितपीताभिः पताकाभिरलंकृतम्। अरुणावरजं श्रीमानारुह्य समरे प्रभुः
Adorned with banners of blue, red, and yellow, the illustrious Lord mounted the younger brother of Aruna in battle.
सुवर्णवर्णवपुषं सुपर्णं खेचरोत्तमम्। तमन्वयुः सुरगणा मुनयश्च समाहिताः
The gods and concentrated sages followed that foremost of sky-farers, Suparna, golden-bodied.
गीर्भिः परममंत्राभिस्तुष्टुवुश्च गदाधरम्। तद्वैश्रवणसंश्लिष्टं वैवस्वतपुरःसरम्
With supreme mantras they praised the mace-holder with their words, he who was joined by Vaishravana and led by Vaivasvata.
वारिराजपरिक्षिप्तं देवराजविराजितम्। पवनाबद्धनिर्घोषं संप्रदीप्त हुताशनम्
Encircled by the king of waters, resplendent with the king of gods, with a roar bound by the wind, blazing like sacrificial fire.
विष्णोर्जिष्णोः सहिष्णोश्च भ्राजिष्णोस्तेजसावृतम्। बलं बलवदुद्रिक्ते युद्धाय समवर्तत
The army, filled with the brilliance of Vishnu, Jishnu, Sahiṣṇu, and Bhrajiṣṇu, mighty in strength, assembled for battle.
स्वस्त्यस्तु देवेभ्य इति बृहस्पतिरभाषत। स्वस्त्यस्तु दैत्येभ्य इति उशना वाक्यमाददे
Bṛhaspati spoke, 'May there be welfare for the gods,' and Uśanas replied, 'May there be welfare for the daityas.'
ताभ्यां बलाभ्यां संजज्ञे तुमुलो विग्रहस्तथा। सुराणामसुराणां च परस्परजयैषिणाम्
From those two powers arose a tumultuous conflict, as the gods and asuras strove for victory over one another.
