श्रुतस्ते दैत्यसैन्यस्य विस्तारः कुरुनंदन। सुराणामपि सैन्यस्य विस्तरं वैष्णवं शृणु॥१.४०.
You have heard the extent of the Daitya army, O descendant of Kuru; now hear the account of the army of the gods, the Vaiṣṇava host.
पुलस्त्य उवाच। आदित्या वसवो रुद्रा अश्विनौ च महाबलौ। सबलाः सानुगाश्चैव संनह्यन्त यथाक्रमम्
Pulastya said: The Ādityas, Vasus, Rudras, and the mighty Aśvins, all with their followers and forces, arrayed themselves in order.
पुरुहूतश्च पुरतो लोकपालः सहस्रदृक्। ग्रामणीः सर्वदेवानामारुरोह वरद्विपम्
And Puruhūta, the thousand-eyed guardian of the worlds, the leader of all the gods, mounted his noble elephant at the front.
सव्ये चास्य रथः पार्श्वे पक्षिप्रवरकेतनः। सुरारुचक्रचरणो हैमच्छत्रपरिष्कृतः
On his left side was a splendid chariot, bearing the banner of the foremost bird, with wheels shining like the sun, adorned with golden parasols.
देवगंधर्वयक्षौघैरनुयातः सहस्रशः। दीप्तिमद्भिश्च स्वर्गस्थैर्ब्रह्मर्षिभिरभिष्टुतः
He was followed by thousands of hosts of gods, Gandharvas, and Yakṣas, praised by radiant dwellers of heaven and by Brahmarṣis.
वज्रविस्फारितोद्भूतैर्विद्युदिंद्रायुधप्रभैः। युक्तं बलाहकगणैः पर्वतैरिव कामगैः
With clouds formed by the thunderbolt’s blast, shining with the brilliance of lightning and Indra’s weapons, it was yoked with masses of clouds like wish-fulfilling mountains.
यमारूढः स भगवान्पर्येति सकलं जगत्। हविर्दानेषु गायंति विप्रा मखमुखेस्थिताः
That blessed one, mounted upon it, circles the entire world; at sacrifices, the priests sing his praises as they stand at the forefront of the ritual.
स्वर्गसंग्रामयातेषु देवतूर्यनिनादिषु। सेंद्रं तमुपनृत्यंति शतशो ह्यप्सरोगणाः
As the celestial drums resound in the heavenly battle, hundreds of Apsaras dance before him and Indra.
केतुना नागराजेन राजमानो यथा रविः। युक्तो हयसहस्रेण मनोमारुतरंहसा
With the banner of the serpent king, shining like the sun, yoked to a thousand horses swift as the mind and wind.
सम्यग्रथवरो भाति युक्तो मातलिना तदा। कृत्स्नः परिवृतो मेरुर्भास्करस्येव तेजसा
That excellent chariot, properly yoked by Mātali, shone forth, surrounded on all sides like Mount Meru by the radiance of the sun.
यमस्तु दंडमुद्यम्य कालयुक्तं च मुद्गरं। तस्थौ सुरगणानीके दैत्यानां चैव दर्शयन्
Yama, raising his staff and a mace fit for time, stood in the midst of the gods’ host, displaying them to the Daityas.
चतुर्भिः सागरैर्युक्तो लेलिहानैश्च पन्नगैः। शंखमुक्तांगदधरो बिभ्रत्तोयमयं वपुः
He was joined by four oceans, with licking serpents, adorned with conch and bracelets, bearing a form made of water.
कालपाशान्समाविध्य हयैः शशिकरोपमैः। वाय्वीरितजलाकारैः कुर्वन्लीलाः सहस्रशः
Brandishing the nooses of time, with horses like the rays of the moon, performing countless playful acts with forms of wind, fire, and water.
पांडुरोद्धूतवसनः प्रवालरुचिरांगदः। मणिश्यामोत्तमवपुर्हारकेणार्चितोदरः
Clad in pure white garments, adorned with coral-bright armlets, his excellent dark-blue body gleamed, his waist honored by a jeweled belt.
वरुणः पाशधृङ्मध्ये देवानीकस्य तस्थिवान्। युद्धवेलामभिलषन्भिन्नवेल इवार्णवः
Varuṇa, holding a noose, stood in the midst of the gods’ host, desiring the time of battle, like the ocean longing to break its shore.
यक्षराक्षससैन्येन गुह्यकानां गणैरपि। युक्तश्च शंखपद्माभ्यां निधीनामधिपः प्रभुः
Joined by the army of Yakṣas and Rākṣasas, and by hosts of Guhyakas, the lord of treasures, mighty, armed with conch and lotus, was present.
राजराजेश्वरःश्रीमान्गदापाणिरदृश्यत। विमानयोधी धनदो विमाने पुष्पके स्थितः
The illustrious King of Kings, with mace in hand, appeared; the Lord of Wealth, standing in the aerial chariot Puṣpaka, was seen among the warriors.
स राजराजः शुशुभे यक्षेशो नरवाहनः। पूर्वपक्षे सहस्राक्षः पितृराजश्च दक्षिणे
That King of Kings, the Lord of the Yakṣas, shone resplendent, riding upon a human vehicle; on the eastern side was the thousand-eyed one, and on the southern side, the Lord of the Ancestors.
वरुणः पश्चिमे पक्ष उत्तरे नरवाहनः। चतुःपक्षाश्च चत्त्वारो लोकपाला महाबलाः
Varuṇa was on the western side, and on the northern side, the Lord riding upon men; on all four sides stood the four mighty guardians of the world.
आत्मदिक्षुचरंतश्चतस्यदेवबलस्यते। सूर्यः सप्ताश्वयुक्तेन रथेनानिलगामिना
The Sun, traversing his own directions, moved with his divine army; he rode in a chariot drawn by seven horses, moving with the wind.
श्रिया जाज्वल्यमानेन दीप्यमानैश्च रश्मिभिः। उदयास्तमयौ चक्रे मेरुपर्यन्तगामिना
Blazing with splendor and shining rays, he made the circuit from sunrise to sunset, reaching to the ends of Mount Meru.
त्रिदिव द्वारचक्रेण तपसा लोकमव्ययम्। सहस्ररश्मियुक्तेन भ्राजमानेन तेजसा
With the triple-heaven's gate as his wheel, by his ascetic power he pervaded the imperishable world, joined by a thousand rays and shining with brilliance.
चचार मध्ये देवानां द्वादशात्मा दिवाकरः। सोमः श्वेतहयो भाति स्यंदने शीतरश्मिमान्
In the midst of the gods, the twelve-formed Sun moved about; Soma, with white horses, shines in his chariot, bearing cool rays.
हिमतोयप्रपूर्णाभिर्भाभिराह्लादयञ्जगत्। तमृक्षयोगानुगतं शिशिरांशुं द्विजेश्वरम्
With beams full like icy waters, he delights the world; that ruler of the twice-born, with cool rays, follows the conjunctions of the stars.
शशच्छायांकिततनुं नैशस्य तमसः क्षयम्। ज्योतिषामीश्वरं व्योम्नि रसदं प्रभुमव्ययम्
His body marked by the hare's shadow, he dispels the darkness of night; lord of the luminaries in the sky, he is the imperishable bestower of sap.
ओषधीनां पवित्राणां निधानममृतस्य च। जगतः परमं भागं सौम्यं सर्वमयं रसम्
He is the repository of pure herbs and of nectar; the supreme portion of the world, gentle, all-pervading essence.
ददृशुर्दानवाः सोमं हिमप्रहरणं स्थितम्। यः प्राणः सर्वभूतानां पंचधा भिद्यते नृषु
The Dānavas saw Soma, armed with frost, standing there—he who is the life of all beings and is divided fivefold among men.
सप्तस्कंधगतो लोकांस्त्रीन्दधार चकार च। यमाहुरग्निकर्त्तारं सर्वप्रभवमीश्वरम्
He, having seven branches, supports and creates the worlds; whom they call the maker of fire, the lord from whom all arises.
सप्तस्वरगता यस्य योनिर्गीर्भिरुदीर्यते। यं वदंति चलं भूतं यं वदंत्यशरीरिणम्
His origin is said to dwell in the seven notes; whom they call the moving being, whom they call bodiless.
यमाहुराकाशगमं शीघ्रगं शब्दयोनिजम्। स वायुः सर्वभूतायुरुद्धतः स्वेन तेजसा
Whom they say moves through space, swift, born of sound; that is Vāyu, the life of all beings, exalted by his own brilliance.
