आकाशे तु स्थितो विष्णुरुत्तमं वपुराश्रितः। उवाच देवताः सर्वाः सप्रतिज्ञमिदं वचः॥१.४०.
Standing in the sky, Viṣṇu assumed his supreme form and spoke these words with a vow to all the gods.
शांतिं व्रजत भद्रं वो मा भैष्ट मरुतांगणाः। जिता मे दानवाः सर्वे त्रैलोक्यं परिगृह्यताम्॥१.४०.
Go in peace, blessings upon you; do not fear, hosts of the Maruts. All the Dānavas have been conquered by me; let the three worlds be possessed.
ततोस्य सत्यसंधस्य विष्णोर्वाक्येन तोषिताः। देवाः प्रीतिं पराजग्मुः प्राश्यामृतमिवोत्तमम्॥१.४०.
Then, by the words of Vishnu, who is steadfast in truth, the gods were pleased and experienced joy, as if tasting the finest nectar.
ततस्तमश्च संहृत्य विनेशुश्च बलाहकाः। प्रववुश्च शिवा वाताः प्रसन्नाश्च दिशो दश॥१.४०.
Thereafter, the darkness was dispelled, the clouds vanished, gentle winds blew, and all ten directions became clear.
शुद्धप्रायाणि ज्योतींषि सोमं चक्रुः प्रदक्षिणम्। न विग्रहं ग्रहाश्चक्रुः प्रसन्नाश्चापि सिंधवः॥१.४०.
The radiant stars shone brightly, the moon was circled in reverence, the planets did not cause conflict, and the rivers flowed serenely.
विरजा अभवन्मार्गा लोकाः स्वर्गादयस्त्रयः। यथार्थमूहुस्सरितश्चुक्षुभे न तथार्णवः॥१.४०.
The paths became pure, and the three worlds—heaven and beyond—were cleansed; the rivers surged as was proper, but the ocean did not.
आसन्छुभानीन्द्रियाणि नराणामंतरात्मसु। महर्षयो वीतशोका वेदानुच्चैरधीयत॥१.४०.
The senses of men became luminous within their inner selves; the great sages, free from sorrow, recited the Vedas aloud.
यज्ञेषु च हविः पाकं शिवमाप च पावकः। प्रवृत्तधर्मसंवृत्ता लोका मुदितमानसाः॥१.४०.
In the sacrifices, the oblations were properly cooked and purified by fire; the worlds, established in righteous conduct, were joyful in heart.
विष्णोः सत्यप्रतिज्ञस्य श्रुत्वारिनिधना गिरः। ततो भयं विष्णुमुखाच्छ्रुत्वा दैतेयदानवाः॥१.४०.
Hearing the words of Vishnu, who is true to his vow and speaks of the destruction of enemies, the Daityas and Danavas became fearful upon hearing from Vishnu's mouth.
उद्योगं विपुलं चक्रुर्युद्धाय विजयाय च। मयस्तु कांचनमयं त्रिनल्वांतरमव्ययम्॥१.४०.
They made great preparations for battle and victory; Maya created an imperishable golden fortress with three walls.
चतुश्चक्रं सुविपुलं सुकल्पितमहायुधम्। किंकिणीजालनिर्घोषं द्वीपिचर्मपरिष्कृतम्॥१.४०.
It was a four-wheeled, immense chariot, skillfully equipped with mighty weapons, resounding with the jingling of bells, and adorned with tiger skins.
रुचिरं रश्मिजालैश्च हैमजालैश्च शोभितम्। ईहामृगगणाकीर्णं पक्षिसंघविराजितम्॥१.४०.
It was splendid with rays and golden nets, crowded with eager animals, and radiant with flocks of birds.
दिव्यास्त्रशस्त्ररुचिरं पयोधरनिनादितम्। स्वक्षं रथवरोदारं सूपस्थं गगनोपमम्॥१.४०.
Adorned with divine weapons and shining arms, echoing like thunderclouds, its own grand chariot stood ready, resembling the sky.
गदापरिघसंपूर्णं मूर्तिमंतमिवार्णवम्। हेमकेयूरवलयं चंद्रमंडलकूबरम्॥१.४०.
Filled with maces and iron clubs, it appeared like a living ocean, decorated with golden armlets and bracelets, and a hub like the moon's disc.
सपताकध्वजोपेतं सादित्यमिव मंदरम्। गजेंद्राभोगवपुषं क्वचित्केसरवर्चसम्॥१.४०.
Fitted with banners and flags, it shone like Mandara with the sun, its form like an elephant's coil, and in places, radiant with lion's mane.
युक्तमृक्षसहस्रेण सुधारांबुदनादितम्। दीप्तमाकाशगं दिव्यं रथं पररथारुजम्॥१.४०.
Drawn by a thousand bears, resounding like streams of nectar, blazing, celestial, and airborne, it was a chariot surpassing all others.
अध्यतिष्ठद्रणाकांक्षी मेरुं दीप्तमिवांशुमान्। तारस्तु क्रोशविस्तारमायामे च तथाविधम्॥१.४०.
Eager for battle, he mounted it, shining like the sun on Meru; its width was a krosha, and its length was equally vast.
शैलकूबरसंकाशं नीलांजनचयोपमम्। काललोहस्य रत्नानां समूहाबद्धकूबरम्॥१.४०.
Its hub resembled a mountain peak, like a mass of dark collyrium, bound with clusters of gems of black and red hues.
तिमिरोद्गारकिरणं गर्जंतमिव तोयदम्। लोहजालेन महता सगवाक्षेण दंशितम्॥१.४०.
Emitting rays like darkness expelled, thundering like a rain cloud, it was fitted with a great iron mesh and pierced with windows.
आयसैः परिघैः पूर्णं क्षेपणीयैश्च मुद्गरैः। प्रासैः पाशैश्च विततैरसंयुक्तैश्च कण्टकैः॥१.४०.
It was filled with iron clubs, throwing rods, heavy mallets, spears, extended nooses, and unattached spikes.
शोभितं त्रासनीयैश्च तोमरैः सपरश्वधैः। उद्यतं द्विषतां हेतोर्द्वितीयमिव मंदरम्॥१.४०.
Adorned with terrifying spears and axes, it rose up for the destruction of its enemies, like a second Mandara mountain.
युक्तं खरसहस्रेण सोऽध्यारोहद्रथोत्तमम्। विरोचनस्तु संक्रुद्धो गदापाणिरवस्थितः॥१.४०.
He mounted the finest chariot, yoked with a thousand donkeys; Virocana, enraged, stood there holding his mace.
प्रमुखे तस्य सैन्यस्य दीप्तशृंग इवाचलः। युक्तं हयसहस्रेण हयग्रीवस्तु दानवः॥१.४०.
At the front of his army, like a mountain with blazing peaks, the demon Hayagriva, yoked to a thousand horses, stood ready.
व्यूहितं दानवव्यूहं परिचक्राम वीर्यवान्। विप्रचित्तिसुतः श्वेतः श्वेतकुंडलभूषणः॥१.४०.
The mighty Śveta, son of Vipracitti, adorned with white earrings, circled the demon formation, arranging their battle lines.
स्यंदनं वाहयामास परानीकस्य मर्दनः। व्यायतं किष्कुसाहस्रं धनुर्विस्फारयन्महत्॥१.४०.
He drove his chariot, crushing the enemy ranks, drawing his great bow, strung with a thousand bowstrings.
स चाहवमुखे तस्थौ सप्ररोह इवाचलः। खरस्तु विष्किरिन्क्रोधान्नेत्राभ्यां रोपजं जलम्॥१.४०.
He stood on the battlefield like a mountain with its peaks; Kharas, furious, tears welling from his eyes, stood ready.
स्फुरद्दंतौष्ठनयनः संग्रामं सोभ्यकांक्षत। त्वष्टा त्वष्टादशहयं यानमास्थाय दानवः॥१.४०.
His teeth, lips, and eyes quivering, he longed for battle; the demon Tvaṣṭā mounted a chariot drawn by eighteen horses.
दिव्यव्यूहप्रतीकाशा युद्धायाभिमुखः स्थितः। अरिष्टो बलिपुत्रश्च वरिष्ठो दुर्धरायुधः॥१.४०.
He stood facing battle, resembling a divine battle formation; Ariṣṭa, son of Bali, the foremost, wielded mighty weapons.
युद्धायाभिमुखस्तस्थौ धराधरविकंपनः। किशोरस्त्वतिसंहर्षात्किशोर इव चोदितः॥१.४०.
He stood facing the battle, shaking the mountains; Kiśora, out of great excitement, was urged on like a young bull.
अभवद्दैत्यमध्ये स ग्रहमध्ये यथा रविः। लंबस्तु नवमेघाभः प्रलंबांबरभूषणः॥१.४०.
In the midst of the demons, he shone like the sun among the planets; Lamba, resembling a new cloud, was adorned with Pralamba's garment.
