चंडविद्युद्गणोपेता घोरनिर्ह्रादकारिणः। अन्योन्यवेगाभिहताः प्रववुः सप्तमारुताः॥१.४०.
Accompanied by fierce flashes of lightning and producing terrifying roars, the seven winds, clashing with one another, blew violently.
दीप्ततोयाः सनिर्घातैः सह वज्रानलानिलैः। रवैस्सुघोरैरुत्पातैर्दह्यमानमिवाम्बरम्॥१.४०.
Brilliant with water and thunder, together with lightning, fire, and wind, they made the sky seem as if it were burning, with dreadful sounds and omens.
पेतुरुल्कासहस्राणि निपेतुः खचराण्यपि। दैवानि च विमानानि प्रपतंत्युत्पतंति च॥१.४०.
Thousands of meteors fell, and celestial beings in the sky also descended; even the divine aerial vehicles dropped and soared erratically.
चतुर्युगांतसमये लोकानां यद्भयं भवेत्। अरूपवति रूपाणि तस्मिन्नुत्पातलक्षणे॥१.४०.
At that moment, signs appeared as they do at the end of the four ages—forms without form, and all the marks of disaster that bring terror to the worlds.
तस्माद्दुष्प्रथितं सर्वं न प्राज्ञायत किंचन। तिमिरौघपरिक्षिप्ता न रेजुश्च दिशो दश॥१.४०.
Therefore, nothing at all could be clearly seen; everything was obscured, enveloped in masses of darkness, and the ten directions did not shine.
विवेश रूपिणी काली कालमेघावगुंठिता। द्यौर्नभात्यभिभूतार्का घोरेण तमसा वृता॥१.४०.
Then Kālī, taking form, entered, shrouded in clouds of time; the sky, overpowered, the sun hidden, was covered in dreadful darkness.
तां घनौघां सतिमिरां दोर्भ्यामाछिद्य स प्रभुः। वपुः स्वं दर्शयामास दिव्यं कृष्णवपुर्हरिः॥१.४०.
That Lord, tearing apart those dense, dark clouds with his two arms, revealed his own divine form—Hari, dark as a rain-cloud.
बलाहकांजननिभं बलाहकतनूरुहम्। तेजसा वपुषा चैव कृष्णं कृष्णमिवाचलम्॥१.४०.
His body and hair resembled the hue of storm clouds, and in brilliance and form he was like a dark, immovable mountain.
दीप्तपीतांबरधरं तप्तकांचनभूषणम्। धूम्रांधकारवपुषं युगांताग्निमिवोत्थितम्॥१.४०.
He wore a shining yellow garment, adorned with ornaments of molten gold, his form dark as smoke and shadow, rising like the fire of dissolution.
वृत्तद्विगुणपीनां संकिरीटाच्छन्नमूर्धजम्। बभौ चामीकरप्रख्यैरायुधैरुपशोभितम्॥१.४०.
His arms were thick and rounded, his head covered by a splendid crown, and he shone with weapons that gleamed like gold.
चंद्रार्ककिरणोद्योतं गिरिकूटमिवोच्छ्रितम्। नंदकानंदितकरं कौस्तुभोद्भासितोरसम्॥१.४०.
He radiated the light of the moon and sun, towering like a mountain peak, his hands delighting Nanda, his chest illumined by the Kaustubha gem.
शक्तिचित्रफलोदग्रं शंखचक्रगदाधरम्। विष्णुशैलं क्षमाशीलं श्रीवत्सं शार्ङ्गपाणिनम्॥१.४०.
He bore the discus, conch, and mace, his shield adorned with wondrous designs; he was Viṣṇu, steadfast as a mountain, marked with Śrīvatsa, holding the bow Śārṅga.
त्रिदशोदारफलदं स्वर्गस्त्रीचारुवल्लभम्। सर्वलोकमनःकांतं सर्वसत्वमनोहरम्॥१.४०.
He grants boons to the gods, beloved of the beautiful women of heaven, enchanting the hearts of all worlds and captivating all beings.
मायाविशालविटपं तोयदौघसमप्रभम्। विद्याहंकारमानाढ्य महाभूतप्ररोहणम्॥१.४०.
He was like a great tree of illusion, radiant as a mass of clouds, rich in knowledge, pride, and honor, the source of the great elements.
विशेषपत्रैर्निचितं ग्रहनक्षत्रपुष्पितम्। दैत्यलोकमहास्कंधं मर्त्यलोकप्रकाशितम्॥१.४०.
Adorned with special leaves, blossoming with planets and stars, it is the great trunk of the world of the Daityas, made visible to the world of mortals.
सागराकारनिर्ह्रादं रसातलगलाश्रयम्। नागेंद्रपाशैर्विततं पक्षिजंतुसमन्वितम्॥१.४०.
Resounding like the ocean, with its base in the depths of the netherworld, stretched out by the bonds of the lord of serpents, and filled with flocks of birds.
शीलानाहार्यगंधाढ्यं सर्वलोकमहाद्रुमम्। अव्यक्तानंदसलिलं व्यक्ताहंकारफेनिलम्॥१.४०.
Rich with the fragrance of steadfastness, the great tree of all worlds, its waters are the unmanifested bliss, its foam the manifest ego.
महाभूतकरौघौघं ग्रहनक्षत्रबुद्बुदम्। विमानवाहनैर्व्याप्तं तोयदाडम्बराकुलम्॥१.४०.
A mass of the streams of the great elements, with planets and stars as bubbles, filled with celestial vehicles, crowded with the tumult of clouds.
जंतुमत्स्यगणाकीर्णं शैलशंखकुलैर्युतम्। त्रैगुण्यविषयावर्तं सर्वलोकतिमिंगिलम्॥१.४०.
Teeming with hosts of creatures and fish, joined by mountains and conch-shell clusters, a whirlpool of the three qualities, the devourer of all worlds.
वीरवृक्षलतागुल्मं भुजगोत्सृष्टशैवलम्। द्वादशार्कमहाद्वीपं रुद्रैकादशपत्तनम्॥१.४०.
With heroic trees, vines, and thickets, seaweed cast by serpents, the great continent of twelve suns, and the eleven cities of Rudra.
वस्वष्टपर्वतोपेतं त्रैलोक्यांभो महोदधिम्। संध्यासंध्योर्मिसलिलमापूर्णानिलशोभितम्॥१.४०.
Adorned with the eight mountains of the Vasus, the great ocean of the waters of the three worlds, mingled with the waters of dusk and dawn, splendid with the fullness of wind.
दैत्ययक्षगणग्रामं रक्षोगणझषाकुलम्। पितामहमहावीर्यं स्वर्गस्त्रीरत्नसंकुलम्॥१.४०.
A village of Daityas and Yakshas, crowded with the fish of Rakshasa hosts, endowed with the great power of the Grandfather, filled with the jewel-like women of heaven.
श्री कीर्ति कांतिलक्ष्मीभिर्नदीभिश्च समाकुलम्। कालयोगमहावर्षप्रलयोत्पत्तिवेगितम्॥१.४०.
Filled with Śrī, fame, splendor, and fortune, and with rivers, impelled by the great showers of time, yoga, creation, and dissolution.
सत्संयोगमहापारं नारायणमहार्णवम्। देवातिदेवं वरदं भक्तानां भक्तवत्सलम्॥१.४०.
The great ocean of Nārāyaṇa, the supreme union of the good, the god above the gods, the bestower of boons, beloved of devotees.
अनुग्रहकरं देवं प्रशांतिकरणं शुभम्। हर्यश्वरथसंयुक्त सुपर्णध्वजशोभिते॥१.४०.
The god who grants favor, who brings peace and auspiciousness, adorned with the chariot of Haryaśva and the banner of Garuḍa.
चंद्रार्कचक्ररचित उदाराक्षवृतांतरे। अनंतरश्मिसंयुक्ते दुर्दर्शे मेरुकूबरे॥१.४०.
Fashioned with the discs of the moon and sun, surrounded by noble-eyed ones, joined with endless rays, difficult to behold, on the summit of Meru.
तारकाचित्रकुसुमे ग्रहनक्षत्रबंधुरे। भयेष्वभयदे व्योम्नि देवदैत्यापराजिते॥१.४०.
Adorned with star-patterned flowers, shining with planets and stars, giver of fearlessness in dangers, unconquered by gods or demons in the sky.
हर्यश्वरथसंयुक्तमुक्ताशोभासमन्वितम्। ददृशुस्ते स्थितं देवं दिव्यलोकमये रथे॥१.४०.
They saw that god, standing upon a divine chariot pervading the heavenly worlds, joined with the chariot of Haryaśva and adorned with the radiance of pearls.
ते कृतांजलयः सर्वे देवा इंद्रपुरोगमाः। जयशब्दं पुरस्कृत्य शरण्यं शरणं गताः॥१.४०.
All the gods, led by Indra, with hands joined in reverence, approached the refuge, offering shouts of victory.
एतेषां च गिरः श्रुत्वा स विष्णुर्देवदैवतः। मनश्चक्रे विनाशाय दानवानां महामृधे॥१.४०.
Hearing their words, Viṣṇu, the god of gods, resolved in his mind to destroy the Dānavas in the great battle.
