Thus, with these many mantras, Śrīnivāsa, Lord of the universe, who desires the peace of devotees, should be worshipped with care.
Then, taking a handful of damana, with the root mantra, one should offer the damana to Śrī, Śrī Viṣṇu, and the other gods; then, with fragrance and the rest, a great festival should be held with worship, singing, instrumental music, and dance. Having placed a pot of water before the gods, water play should be performed at the feet of the deity on that day. Then, one should worship one’s own teacher with garments, ornaments, and wealth, with faith. Then, together with Vaiṣṇava relatives, one should eat.
Mahādeva said: Then, whoever worships Viṣṇu with a cluster of damana, when the Lord of the universe is worshipped, I am always worshipped as well.
Even a slayer of a brāhmaṇa, a thief of gold, a drinker of wine, or an eater of flesh is freed from sin, O goddess, by seeing the damana festival.
Thus, O goddess, by those excellent Vaiṣṇavas who worship damana, all holy places are accomplished by their worship of the cluster.
By that, the study of the Vedas is accomplished, and also the study of the śāstras; the agnihotra is accomplished by worshipping Hari with the cluster.
That family, whether Brahmin, Kshatriya, Shudra, Vaishya, or any other, is to be regarded as truly great and blessed, and even more so if it is prosperous.
In whichever family the festival of Damanaka is observed, that family is indeed blessed, and truly blessed is the one who worships Vishnu.
O Goddess, when the festival of Damanaka arrives in the spring, one who worships with Damanaka attains the merit equal to giving a thousand cows.
Whoever worships the Lord Garuda-bannered with jasmine flowers in spring, with supreme devotion, becomes eligible for liberation.
Marukā and Damanaka flowers immediately bring satisfaction to Hari; therefore, the best of Vaishnavas should perform this worship.
By worshiping Vishnu in this way, one accomplishes the merit of giving a thousand cows, of giving a maiden in marriage, and of giving the earth itself.
Whoever, at the arrival of spring, takes even a single sprig of Damanaka and worships the Lord of the gods,
O mountain-born one, I do not know the measure of that merit; such a person, becoming four-armed, enjoys righteousness, wealth, and desires in this world and the next, and attains the Vaishnava abode.
Thus ends the eighty-fourth chapter, entitled 'The Great Festival of Damanaka,' in the Uttarakhaṇḍa of the glorious Padma Mahāpurāṇa, in the section of fifty-five thousand verses.
Sūta said: Now the greatness of the month of Kārtika will be described. Once, a sage came to Dvārakā, desiring to see Krishna, bringing divine flowers that had arisen from the wish-fulfilling tree.
Krishna welcomed Nārada with honor, offering him water for washing the feet and hands, and a seat, saying, 'Here is arghya, here is water for your feet.'
Nārada presented those flowers to Krishna, and Krishna distributed them among his sixteen thousand wives.
Forgetting Satyabhāmā, the Lord gave those flowers to all the others; then Satyabhāmā, angered, entered the chamber of wrath.
Understanding this, Krishna went there with a composed mind, honored Satyabhāmā, and remembered Garuḍa in his mind.
As soon as he was remembered, Garuḍa arrived and stood before him; mounting swiftly, the Lord said to his beloved,
'O Satyā, do not be angry; for your sake, even opposing the gods and their king, I will plant the wish-fulfilling tree in your courtyard.'
'O greatly fortunate one, forgive my offense regarding the wish-fulfilling tree.' Thus making this promise, Krishna, together with Satyabhāmā—
Swiftly went to the world of the gods, where the god Indra was; having been asked for the wish-fulfilling tree, the Lord received an answer.
This divine tree is not fit to be obtained by you on earth, O Lord; then, enraged, the mighty-armed one uprooted the tree from its roots.
With great force, he swiftly placed it upon his vehicle; then the valiant bearer of the thunderbolt, raising his weapon with speed—
Struck Garuḍa, saying, 'Abandon the wish-fulfilling tree!'; then the feathered one, out of respect for the thunderbolt, released one feather in haste and departed.
By that blow of the thunderbolt, three birds came forth: the peacock, the mongoose, and the partridge.
The black one went to Dvārāvatī; arriving, he placed it in Satyabhāmā’s house. At that very moment, Nārada arrived, greatly honored by Satyabhāmā.
Satyabhāmā said: 'Such is this wish-fulfilling tree, and such is the Lord, its master. How may one obtain them, life after life? Please tell me this.'
