कार्तिके मासि शुक्लायां पौर्णमास्यां विशेषतः। सर्वासु वा यजेदेवं पूर्णिमासु विधानतः
—especially during the full moon of the bright fortnight in Kartika month, or on any full moon, if he worships the god according to rule—
संक्रान्तौ च महाबाहो चन्द्रसूर्यग्रहेपि वा। यः पश्यति विभुं देवं पूजितं गुरुणा नृप
—or at the solstice, O mighty-armed one, or during an eclipse of the moon or sun, whoever sees the Lord, worshipped by the guru, O King—
तस्य सद्यो भवेत्तुष्टिः पापध्वंसश्च जायते। स मान्यो देवतानां च भवतीह नराधिप
He immediately attains satisfaction, and the destruction of sin occurs; he becomes honored among the gods and among men here.
ब्राह्मणक्षत्रियविशां भक्तानां तु परीक्षणम्। संवत्सरं गुरुः कुर्याज्जातिशौचक्रियादिभिः
The teacher should examine the devotion of Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas for a year, considering their lineage, purity, rituals, and so forth.
उपपन्नमिति ज्ञात्वा हृदये नावधारयेत्॥ तेपि भक्तियुता ध्यात्वा त्वाचार्यं परमेश्वरम्
Having discerned that they are suitable, he should not harbor doubt in his heart; those devoted ones, meditating, should regard the teacher as the Supreme Lord.
संवत्सरं गुरौ भक्तिं कुर्युर्विष्णौ यथा तथा। प्रसादयेयुश्च ततः पूर्णे संवत्सरे गुरुम्
For a year, they should serve the teacher with devotion, just as to Vishnu; then, at the end of the year, they should seek to please the teacher.
भगवंस्त्वत्प्रसादेन संसारार्णवतारणम्। परब्रह्मोपासनेन विरिंच्याराधनेन च
O Lord, by your grace, may we cross the ocean of worldly existence, by worship of the Supreme Brahman and by veneration of Brahma.
सहस्रशीर्षजप्येन मण्डलब्राह्मणेन च। ध्यानेन स्यात्तथास्माकमुपदेशः प्रदीयताम्
Through recitation of the Sahasrashirsha, the Mandala Brahmana, and meditation likewise, may instruction be given to us.
इच्छामो वैदिकीं लक्ष्मीं विशेषेण प्रसीदताम्। अभ्यर्थितो गुरुस्त्वेवं मेधावी तैस्तदा ततः
We desire Vedic prosperity in particular; being thus requested, the wise teacher at that time—
यथाविधि समभ्यर्चेद्ब्रह्माणं विष्णुमग्रतः। ते बद्धनेत्राः स्वाप्यास्तु कार्तिकस्य चतुर्दशीम्1.34.
Worships Brahma according to the prescribed method, with Vishnu at the forefront; they, with restrained senses, should fast on the fourteenth day of Kartika.
ब्राह्मे मुहूर्ते चोत्त्थाय बद्धपद्मासनास्तु ते। ध्यात्वा गुरुं सहस्रारे श्वेतवस्त्रोपवीतकम्
Rising at the Brahma-muhurta, they should sit in the bound lotus posture; meditating on the teacher at the thousand-petaled lotus, clad in white cloth and sacred thread.
श्वेतमाल्यांबरधरं श्वेतगंधानुलेपनम्। निर्गम्य च बहिर्नद्यां कुर्युर्नित्यमतन्द्रिताः
Wearing white garlands and garments, anointed with white sandal paste, going outside to the river, they should perform their daily duties with diligence.
क्षीरवृक्षोत्थमाचार्यो दापयेद्दन्तधावनम्। ते च तं भक्षयेयुर्हि नदीं गत्वा समुद्रगाम्
The teacher should provide them with a tooth-cleaning stick from a milky tree; after chewing it, they should go to the river that flows to the ocean.
इतरद्वा तटाकं वा गृहे वापि विधानतः। तद्भक्षयेयुर्मंत्रेण मंत्रितं परमेष्ठिनः
Or, according to rule, to another river, a pond, or at home; they should chew it, reciting the mantra consecrated by the Supreme Lord.
आपोहिष्ठेति मंत्रेण सप्तकृत्वोभिमंत्रितं। देवस्य त्वेति वै जप्त्वा युंजानेति करे न्यसेत्
With the mantra 'āpohiṣṭha,' having consecrated it seven times, reciting 'of the god, indeed,' one should place it in the hand, saying 'let it be applied.'
इरावत्येति प्रक्षाल्य ब्रह्मोदनेति वै मुखे। भक्षयित्वा क्षिपेद्दूरं पतितं च निरीक्षयेत्
Washing with 'irāvatī,' and reciting 'brahmodana' at the mouth, after chewing, one should throw it far away and observe where it falls.
सम्मुखं प्राङ्मुखं वापि विदिशं चापि वा गतम्। संमुखे देवतालब्धिर्मंत्रसिद्धिश्च जायते
If it falls facing forward, eastward, or in any auspicious direction, there is attainment of the deity and success of the mantra.
पराङ्मुखे दंतकाष्ठे सर्वे देवाः पराङ्मुखाः। उत्तरेण गते तस्मिन्सिद्धिर्भवति वा न वा
If the tooth-stick faces away, all the gods turn away; if it goes north, success may or may not occur.
दक्षिणेन भवेन्मृत्युर्गुरोस्तस्य न संशयः। प्रेक्ष्याशुभं स्वपेद्भूमौ देवदेवस्य सन्निधौ
If it goes south, there is death for the teacher, without doubt; seeing an inauspicious sign, one should sleep on the ground in the presence of the Lord of gods.
स्वप्नान्दृष्ट्वा गुरोरग्रे श्रावयेयुर्विचक्षणाः। ततः शुभाशुभं तत्र लक्षयेत्परमो गुरुः
Having seen dreams before the teacher, the wise should recount them; then the supreme teacher should discern what is auspicious or inauspicious therein.
पौर्णमास्यामथ स्नात्वा ततो देवालयं व्रजेत्। गुरुश्च मंडलं भूमौ कल्पितायां तु वर्तयेत्
Then, having bathed on the full moon day, one should go to the temple; the teacher should arrange the maṇḍala on the prepared ground.
लक्षणैर्विविधैर्भूमिं लक्षयित्वा विधानतः। षोडशारं लिखेत्पद्मं नवधारमथापि वा
Having marked the ground with various auspicious signs according to the rules, one should draw a lotus with sixteen petals, or with nine channels.
अष्टपत्रमथो वापि लिखित्त्वा दर्शयेद्बुधः। नेत्रबंधं तु कुर्वीत सितवस्त्रेण यत्नतः
Or, having drawn an eight-petaled lotus, the wise should display it; one should carefully bind the eyes with a white cloth.
वर्णानुक्रमतः शिष्यान्पुष्पहस्तान्प्रवेशयेत्। नवनाभं यदा कुर्यान्मंडलं वर्णकैर्बुधः
According to the order of the syllables, the teacher should admit the disciples, each holding flowers; when the wise one makes the maṇḍala with nine centers, he should use colored powders.
इंद्राणीपूर्वकं देवमिंद्रमैंद्र्यां तु पूजयेत्। लोकपालैः समं तद्वदग्निं संपूजयेन्नृप
He should worship the deity Indra first, then Indrāṇī, and then the other deities in order; together with the guardians of the directions, O King, he should also worship Agni in the same way.
दिशि वह्नेर्यमं याम्यां नैऋत्यां चैव निर्ऋतिम्। वरुणं वारुणाशायां वायुं वायव्यगोचरे
In the direction of fire, Yama; in the southern direction, Nirṛti; Varuṇa in the western direction; and Vāyu in the northwestern region.
धनदं चोत्तरे न्यस्य रुद्रमीशानगोचरे। कमंडलुं पूर्वतो हि स्रुचं वै दक्षिणे तथा
He should place Dhanada in the north, Rudra in the northeastern region; a water pot in the east, and a ladle in the south.
हंसं वै पश्चिमायां तु उत्तरायां स्रुवं तथा। आग्नेय्यां च ब्रसीं दद्यान्नैर्ऋत्यां पादुके तथा
A swan in the west, and a spoon in the north; in the southeast, a fire-pan should be placed, and in the southwest, sandals.
वायव्यां योगपट्टं च ऐशान्यां च गलंतिकाम्। विष्णुस्तु पूर्वतः पूज्यो दक्षिणे चापि शंकरः
In the northwest, a yoga-belt, and in the northeast, a garland; Viṣṇu should be worshipped in the east, and Śaṃkara in the south.
पश्चिमे तु रविर्देव ऋषयश्चोत्तरे तथा। मध्ये स्वयं पद्मजन्मा सावित्री दक्षिणे तथा
In the west, the god Ravi should be worshipped, and in the north, the sages; in the center, the lotus-born himself, and Sāvitrī in the south.
