Having returned home, I will give joyfully—O Lord, be gracious to me; in the same way, having come to their own house, one should do so for the ancestors.
Before offering the rice-balls, one should perform the śrāddha ritual according to rule; the ancestors are satisfied for a day of Brahmā.
O Śiva, giving at home brings eight times the merit of giving at a sacred place; and the lowly do not see the śrāddha performed by the twice-born.
Indeed, the śrāddha for the ancestors is to be performed in a secluded and protected place at home; if seen by the lowly, it is ruined and does not reach the ancestors.
Therefore, by every effort, one should perform the śrāddha in secret; it is said by the Self-born that this gives satisfaction to the ancestors.
That rite which is performed with devotion to Gaurī, and is known by the wise, is excellent; known in the mind as royal, it bestows fame upon people.
One who desires their own welfare should always give charity in secret; cooked food, when given openly, is seen by people on earth.
That which is given openly is seen only for satisfaction, but never here otherwise; when a single Brahmin is fed, a crore are considered fed.
There is no doubt in this matter, the ancient statement is true; in a sacred place, a Brahmin should never be tested in any way.
Manu declared that when someone seeking food arrives, one should offer them food—whether with saktu flour, balls of food, saṃyāva cakes, or with milk-rice.
This should be done, as seen by the sages, with piṇyāka cakes or with inguda fruit; food made from sesame cakes should always be given by devoted people.
A śrāddha should be performed there, omitting the offering of water and welcoming rites; vultures or crows do not take the offerings by sight.
That śrāddha performed at a sacred place is said to be the highest satisfaction for ancestors; it must be done with effort, and devotion alone is the cause here.
The ancestors are pleased by devotion, and when satisfied, they grant desires; they bestow sons, grandsons, wealth, grain, and whatever else the mind wishes.
When worshipped with devotion, the forefather joyfully gives to people; whether at the proper time or not, śrāddha should always be performed at a sacred place.
Whenever possible, one should always bathe and offer oblations to the ancestors; the giving of food balls must be performed, which is especially dear to the ancestors.
The ancestors indeed look upon their descendant who has arrived, filled with great hope, and they eagerly desire water from him.
Delay should never be made, nor should any obstacle be caused; their lineage will always remain unbroken throughout time.
The ancestors, desiring the giver of sons and the increase of śrāddha, never cause the interruption of lineage by him.
Therefore, śrāddha was formerly declared by the self-born one himself; whatever is to be done by twice-borns devoted to ancestors is of the highest merit.
Whether at a sacred place, field, home, during a transit, eclipse, solstice, equinox, or at one's birth star when afflicted—
These śrāddha times were declared long ago by the self-born; when śrāddha is performed, no bodily suffering arises for people.
Then, whatever evil is done by the son, all is abandoned; so that suffering does not arise from planets, thieves, kings, and so on.
All evil deeds are destroyed, and one attains auspicious progress in the next world; there is no doubt, just as Prajāpati has declared.
In the Krita Yuga, the sacred lakes (Pushkaras) were foremost; in the Treta, Naimisha was remembered; in the Dvapara, Kurukshetra; and in the Kali Yuga, one should resort to the Ganga.
It is difficult to dwell at Pushkara, and difficult to perform austerity there; whatever sin is committed elsewhere becomes light at that holy place.
No sin committed elsewhere is removed by any other holy place; but whoever remembers the Pushkaras at evening and morning with joined palms—
—becomes as if purified at all holy places, O descendant of Bharata; one who, with controlled senses, bathes at Pushkara in the evening and morning—
—obtains the fruit of all sacrifices and attains the world of Brahma; whether for twelve years, twelve days, a month, or even half a month—
—whoever resides always at Pushkara attains the highest state, surpassing even the worlds situated above the world of Brahma.
