Among the Mlecchas, among followers of Parvati, and among those who are base, foolish, impure, cursed, and wicked, Lakshmi herself would take up residence—this was the effect of a curse. Having pronounced this curse, Lakshmi then turned and cursed Indrani as well. It was declared that when Indra, stained by the terrible sin of Brahmin-killing, was seized and his wife, Indrani, plunged into misery, and when Nahusha took over the kingdom of the gods, Indrani would come before Lakshmi, pleading with her. Nahusha, intoxicated by power, boasted: “How will this foolish woman not approach me, who am now Indra? If I do not obtain Shachi (Indrani), I will destroy all the gods.” At that time, Indrani, terrified and lost, distressed in the house of the lord of speech, would dwell in misery, suffering from Lakshmi’s curse. In that moment of cosmic upheaval, all the wives of the gods were cursed; none would find joy in children. Day and night, they burned with sorrow, reviled as barren—even Gauri herself was not spared from the curse uttered by Savitri, the one of luminous complexion. But when Gauri was seen weeping, Vishnu was moved by compassion. He comforted her, saying, “Do not weep, wide-eyed one. Come here, ever-auspicious lady.” He invited her to enter the assembly, to don the sacred girdle and linen garment, to accept a vow, and assured her, “I bow to the feet of Brahma on your behalf.” Yet, Gauri replied, “I will not do your bidding. I will go where I do not hear any sound.” Saying this, she ascended and stood alone on a mountain. Vishnu followed, stood before her with joined palms, and praised her with deep devotion. He proclaimed, “She who is everywhere, present in all beings, manifest in all directions—whatever exists, whether manifest or unmanifest, cannot be seen without you. Yet, in these sacred places, she is visible to those who seek accomplishment. She is to be remembered by those desiring the earth. Hear me: Savitri, called Pushkara, is the foremost of holy places.
