Padma Purana

विहाय मूर्च्छां संचित्य विष्णुं बाणैर्जघान सः । ततः क्रुद्धेन हरिणा स क्षितौ पातितो व्यसुः

Regaining consciousness after fainting, Kālanemi attacked Viṣṇu with arrows; then, angered, Hari cast him down to the earth, lifeless.

राजन्जघान संचिंत्य राहुं खड्गेन चंद्रमाः । राहुस्तु तं परित्यज्य तदा सूर्यमधावत

O King, the Moon, having considered, struck Rāhu with a sword; but Rāhu, leaving him aside, then rushed toward the Sun.

सहस्राशुं रणे जित्वा राहुश्चंद्रमधावत । जघान तं च खङ्गेन समरे रजनीपतिः

Rāhu, having conquered the Moon in battle, swiftly pursued him; but the Lord of Night struck Rāhu with a sword in the fight.

सैंहिकेयांगकाठिन्यात्खङ्गं चूर्णमभूत्तदा । जघान मुष्टिना गाढं कठिनेन विधुंतुदः

Because of the hardness of Siṃhikeya's body, the sword was shattered; then the Moon's foe struck him forcefully with his hard fist.

चंद्रमुत्थाप्य तं कंठे धृत्वा वेगान्महामृधे । गिलित्वा राहुणा चंद्रोप्युद्गीर्णश्च ततः पुनः

Lifting up the Moon, Rāhu seized him by the neck with great speed in the mighty conflict; swallowing him, Rāhu then spat him out again.

मृगं स्वचिह्नमुरसि निधाय विससर्ज ह । स उच्चैःश्रवसं गृह्य हयरत्नं विधुंतुदः

Placing his own mark, the deer, upon his chest, the Moon departed; the Moon's foe, seizing Uccaiḥśravas, the jewel among horses—

जालंधरांतिकं नीत्वा भक्त्या तस्मै न्यवेदयत् । दुर्वारणो रणे क्रुद्धस्तं यमं गदया हनत्

—led him to Jālandhara and, with devotion, presented him to him; but in the battle, the unstoppable and enraged one struck Yama with his mace.

निशितैर्मार्गणैर्भिन्नः शक्रपुत्रेण चाहवे । धृत्वा जयंतं संह्रादः परिघाघातमूर्च्छितम्

Pierced by sharp arrows from the son of Indra in the fight, Saṃhrāda seized Jayanta, who had been stunned by a blow from a club.

ऐरावतं समारुह्य ययौ जालंधरं प्रति । हतवांश्चैव गदया निह्रादं धनदो रणे

Mounting Airāvata, he went toward Jālandhara; and in battle, the Lord of Wealth struck down Nihrāda with his mace.

रुद्रास्त्रिशूलनिर्घातैर्निशुंभं जघ्नुरोजसा । निशुंभो बाणजालैश्च पीडयामास तानति

With the thunderous blows of Rudra's trident, Niśumbha was slain with might; but Niśumbha, in turn, tormented them with volleys of arrows.

शुंभासुरो देवगणान्पूरयामास मार्गणैः । मृत्युं मायामय मयो बद्ध्वा पाशैर्निनायतम्

Śumbha, the asura, overwhelmed the hosts of gods with arrows; Maya, the master of illusion, bound Death with nooses and led him away.

ददौ जालंधरायासौ पौलोम्ने सोऽपि सिंधवे । अब्धिना च मुखे क्षिप्तो लोको जीवतु निर्भयः

He gave Mṛtyu to Jālandhara; and the son of Pulomā gave him to the Ocean; cast into the mouth of the sea, the world could live without fear.

बद्ध्वा च नमुचिं पाशैर्वासवोऽपि रसातलम् । निन्ये विश्वस्य हंतारं अथ जालंधरो ययौ

Indra, too, bound Namuci with nooses and took him to the netherworld; then Jālandhara, the destroyer of the universe, advanced.

अथेंद्रबलयोर्युद्धमभूद्राजन्सुदारुणम् । बलांगरोचिषो भांति दिशो दश रवेरिव

Then, O King, a most terrible battle broke out between Indra and Balā; the radiance of Balā's limbs shone in all ten directions like the sun.

सर्वाण्यस्त्राणि शक्रस्य शीर्णान्यंगे बलस्य च । बलीयसा बलेनेंद्रो मुद्गरेण हतो हृदि

All of Indra's weapons were shattered, as were Balā's limbs; Indra, with superior strength, struck Balā in the heart with a mace.

ननादेंद्रस्ततो भीमं तच्छ्रुत्वा स बलोहसत् । हसतस्तस्य निश्चेरुर्मुखतो मौक्तिकानि च

Then Indra roared fearsomely; hearing this, Balā laughed, and as he laughed, pearls fell from his mouth.

तस्यांगस्याभिलाषेण न युद्धमकरोत्तदा । तुष्टाव वासवोऽत्यर्थं तं बलं बलसागरम्

Because of his desire for that body, he did not fight then; Indra, exceedingly pleased, praised Balā, the ocean of strength.

वरं वृणु सुरश्रेष्ठेत्युक्तः प्राह बलं प्रति । यदि तुष्टोऽसि दैत्येश स्वं वपुर्दातुमर्हसि

When he was told, 'Choose a boon, O best of gods,' Bala replied, 'If you are pleased, O lord of the Daityas, you should grant me your own body.'

तदिंद्र वचनं श्रुत्वा भित्त्वा शस्त्रैर्गृहाण माम् । इत्युवाच बलं सोऽपि किमदेयं महात्मनाम्

Hearing these words, Indra said, 'Strike me with weapons and seize me.' Bala too replied, 'What is un-givable for the great-souled?'

सस्मारितो मातलिना वज्रेणांगं जघान तत् । तेन वज्रप्रहारेण बलांगं तद्व्यशीर्यत

Reminded by Mātali, Indra struck Bala's body with the thunderbolt; by that blow of the thunderbolt, Bala's body was shattered.

बलांगस्यैकभागस्तु पपात कनकाचले । तुहिनाद्रौ द्वितीयस्तु तृतीयो गोनगेऽपतत्

One part of Bala's body fell on the golden mountain, the second on the snowy mountain, and the third fell on Mount Goṇaga.

चतुर्थो देवनद्यां च पंचमो मंदरे तथा । वज्राकरे पपातांशः षष्ठश्च विजयांगजः

The fourth part fell into the divine river, the fifth on Mount Mandara, and a portion fell on Vajrākara; the sixth became Vijayāṅgaja.

तस्य जातिविशुद्धस्य परिशुद्धेन कर्मणा । कायस्यावयवाः सर्वे रत्नबीजत्वमागताः

Because of his pure lineage and purified deeds, all the limbs of his body became the seeds of jewels.

वज्रादस्थिकणाः कीर्णाः षट्कोणा मणयोऽभवन् । अक्षिभ्यामिन्द्रनीला वै माणिक्यं श्रुतिसंभवम्

Fragments of bone from the thunderbolt became six-sided gems; from his eyes came sapphires, from his ears arose rubies.

क्षतजात्पद्मरागाः स्युः मेदसो मरकतास्तथा । प्रवालानि च जिह्वातो दंता मुक्तास्तथाभवन्

Padmarāga gems came from his blood, emeralds from his fat; coral from his tongue, and pearls arose from his teeth.

मज्जोद्भवं मरकतं गारुत्मतमभून्नसा । कांस्यं पुरीषं रजतं वीर्यं ताम्रं च मूत्रजम्

Emeralds born from his marrow became gārutmata at his nose; bronze from his feces, silver from his semen, and copper from his urine.

अंगस्योद्वर्तनाज्जातं पित्तलं ब्रह्मवीतिकाः । नादाद्वैदूर्यमुत्पन्नं रत्नं चारुतरं तथा

From the rubbing of his body was born brass, and brahmavītikā gems; from his sound arose cat's-eye and another beautiful jewel.

नखेभ्यः कनकोत्पत्ती रुधिराच्च रसोद्भवः । मेदसः स्फटिकं जातं प्रवालं मांससंभवम्

Gold originated from his nails, quicksilver from his blood; crystal was born from his fat, and coral from his flesh.

बलदेहोद्भवान्यासन्रत्नानि पृथिवीतले । पुण्योपचयसंपत्त्या भोक्ष्यंते विमलैर्जनैः

The jewels that arose from Bala's body came to be on the earth, to be enjoyed by pure people as the fruit of accumulated merit.
