तत्सर्वं तत्र भोगार्हमधः पातफलप्रदम्
All that, fit for enjoyment, there yields the fruit of a fall to the lower worlds.
दत्त्वाभयं च सर्वेषां सुराणां त्रिदिवं ददौ

देवालये नदीतीरे सो ऽश्वमेधफलं लभेत्
At a temple or riverbank, one attains the fruit of an Ashvamedha sacrifice.
अधुना लक्षणं ब्रूहि भ्रातर्मे दानपात्रघयोः
Now, brother, tell me the characteristics of a proper recipient for gifts.
तस्मै तानानि देयानि दत्तस्यानन्त्यमिच्छता
To him should those gifts be given, who desires the endless fruit of giving.
न कदापि क्षत्रविशो गृह्णीयातां प्रतिग्रहम्

परोपतापिनश्चापि दत्तं भवति निष्फलम्

धावको वा भवेत्तेषां दत्तं भवति निष्फलम्
Even if he is their servant, a gift to such a person becomes fruitless.
अभक्ष्य भक्षकस्यापि दत्तं भवति निष्फलम्
A gift to one who eats forbidden food also becomes fruitless.
पैंश्वलान्नभुजश्चापि दत्तं भवति निष्फलम्
A gift to one who eats food from a funeral offering also becomes fruitless.
दुष्प्रतिग्रहदग्धस्य दत्तं भवति निष्फलम्
A gift given to one corrupted by wrongful acceptance becomes fruitless.
सध्याभोजिन एवापिदत्तं भवति निष्फलम्
Even a gift given to one who eats immediately after receiving is rendered fruitless.
कुण्डस्य चापि गोलस्य दत्तं भवति निष्फलम्
A gift given to a bald man or a hunchback also becomes fruitless.
स्त्रीजितस्यातिदुष्टस्य दत्तं भवित निष्फलम्
A gift given to one conquered by women or exceedingly wicked will become fruitless.
चौरस्य पिशुनस्यापि दत्तं भवति निष्फलम्
A gift given to a thief or a slanderer also becomes fruitless.
सत्कर्मनिरतायापि देयं यत्नेन नारद
O Nārada, a gift should be given with effort even to one devoted to good deeds.

The loss of gifts, enjoyment, and wealth is said to occur in three ways.
धनं धर्मफलं विप्र धर्मो माधवतुष्टिकृत्
O brāhmaṇa, wealth is the fruit of dharma, and dharma brings satisfaction to Mādhava.
