तस्य विष्णुः प्रसन्नात्मा तत्त्वैशअवर्यमनुत्तमम्
To him, Viṣṇu, with a gracious heart, granted supreme and true prosperity.
तस्माद्दैत्यपते मह्यं सर्वधर्मपरायण
Therefore, O lord of the Daityas, to me, devoted to all righteousness—
वैरोचनिस्ततो दृष्टः कलशं जलपूरितम्
Then Vairocani saw a jar filled with water.
विष्णुः सर्वगतोज्ञात्वा जलधारावरोधिनम्
Vishnu, who is all-pervading, knowing it to be an obstacle to the flow of water,
दर्भाग्रे ऽभून्महाशास्त्रं कोटिसूर्यसमप्रभम्

आयाय भार्गवसुरानसुरानेकचक्षुषा
He approached, seen by Bhargava, the gods, the asuras, and many others with their eyes.
बलिर्ददौ महाविष्णोर्महीं त्रिपदसंमिताम्
Bali gave to the great Vishnu the earth, measured by three steps.
अमिमीत महीं द्वाभ्यां पद्भ्यां विश्वतनुर्हरिः
Hari, whose form is the universe, measured the earth with two steps.
पादाङ्कुष्टाग्रनिर्भिन्नं ब्रह्माण्डं विभिदे द्विधा
With the tip of his big toe, he split the cosmic egg into two.
धौतविष्णुपदं तोयं निर्मलं लोकपावनम्
The water washed by Vishnu's foot became pure, cleansing the worlds.
तज्जलं पावनं श्रेष्ठं ब्रह्मादीन्पावयत्सुरान्
That water, most pure and excellent, purified the gods beginning with Brahma.
सत्पर्षिसेवितं चैव न्यपतन्मेरुमूर्द्धनि
Attended by true sages, it fell upon the summit of Meru.
ऋषयो मनवश्चैव ह्यस्तुवन्हर्षविह्वलाः
The sages and Manus, overcome with joy, praised him.
ब्रह्मात्मने ब्रह्मरतात्मबुद्धये नमो ऽस्तु ते ऽव्याहतकर्मशीलिने
Homage to you, whose soul is Brahman, whose mind delights in Brahman, whose actions are unimpeded.
सर्वात्मने जगन्मूर्त्ते प्रमाणातीत ते नमः
Homage to you, the soul of all, the form of the universe, beyond all measure.
विश्वतः शिरसे चैव विश्वतो गतये नमः
Homage to you, whose head is everywhere, whose movement is everywhere.
दत्त्वाभयं च मुमुदे देवदेवः सनातनः
Having granted fearlessness, the eternal Lord of gods rejoiced.
ददौ तद्वारपालश्च भक्तवश्यो बभूव ह
He gave that to the gatekeeper, and became subject to the devotion of his devotee.
किं भोज्यं कल्पयामास घोरे सर्पभयाकुले
What food shall we prepare in this place, filled with dreadful fear of serpents?
अपात्रे दीयते यच्च तद्धोरं भोगसाधनम्
Whatever is given to the unworthy becomes a terrible means of enjoyment.
तत्सर्वं तत्र भोगार्हमधः पातफलप्रदम्
All that, fit for enjoyment, there yields the fruit of a fall to the lower worlds.
दत्त्वाभयं च सर्वेषां सुराणां त्रिदिवं ददौ
Having granted safety to all the gods, he gave them heaven.
गन्धर्वैर्गीयमानश्च पुनर्वामनतां गतः
Praised in song by the Gandharvas, he again assumed a dwarf form.
परस्परे स्मितमुखाः प्रणेभुः पुरुषोत्तमम्
With smiling faces, they bowed to the Supreme Person.
मोहयन्निखिलं लोकं प्रपेदे तपसे वनम्
Deluding the entire world, he went to the forest for austerity.
यस्याः स्मरणमात्रेण मुच्यते सर्वपातकैः
By merely remembering her, one is freed from all sins.
देवालये नदीतीरे सो ऽश्वमेधफलं लभेत्
At a temple or riverbank, one attains the fruit of an Ashvamedha sacrifice.
अधुना लक्षणं ब्रूहि भ्रातर्मे दानपात्रघयोः
Now, brother, tell me the characteristics of a proper recipient for gifts.
तस्मै तानानि देयानि दत्तस्यानन्त्यमिच्छता
To him should those gifts be given, who desires the endless fruit of giving.
न कदापि क्षत्रविशो गृह्णीयातां प्रतिग्रहम्
A Kshatriya or a merchant should never accept gifts.
