said, 'O Bhadramati, my purpose is fulfilled; my birth has become fruitful.'
Having spoken thus and duly honored him, Sughoṣa, intent on righteousness—
The earth is sacred, belonging to Viṣṇu; the earth is protected by Viṣṇu.
With this mantra, O lord of the Daityas, Sughoṣa gave that excellent Brāhmaṇa—
And that wise Brāhmaṇa, Bhadramati, requested the earth from him.
Sughoṣa, by the gift of land, was joined by a lineage of millions.
And Bhadramati, O Bali, obtained the prosperity he had desired.
In the same way, dwelling in the abode of Brahmā for tens of millions of ages—
Afterwards, attaining the earth, he was endowed with all prosperity.
Then Bhadramati, O Daitya, free from desire and devoted to Viṣṇu—
To him, Viṣṇu, with a gracious heart, granted supreme and true prosperity.
Therefore, O lord of the Daityas, to me, devoted to all righteousness—
Then Vairocani saw a jar filled with water.
Vishnu, who is all-pervading, knowing it to be an obstacle to the flow of water,
At the tip of the darbha grass appeared a great weapon, shining like ten million suns.
He approached, seen by Bhargava, the gods, the asuras, and many others with their eyes.
Bali gave to the great Vishnu the earth, measured by three steps.
Hari, whose form is the universe, measured the earth with two steps.
With the tip of his big toe, he split the cosmic egg into two.
The water washed by Vishnu's foot became pure, cleansing the worlds.
That water, most pure and excellent, purified the gods beginning with Brahma.
Attended by true sages, it fell upon the summit of Meru.
The sages and Manus, overcome with joy, praised him.
Homage to you, whose soul is Brahman, whose mind delights in Brahman, whose actions are unimpeded.
Homage to you, the soul of all, the form of the universe, beyond all measure.
Homage to you, whose head is everywhere, whose movement is everywhere.
Having granted fearlessness, the eternal Lord of gods rejoiced.
He gave that to the gatekeeper, and became subject to the devotion of his devotee.
What food shall we prepare in this place, filled with dreadful fear of serpents?
Whatever is given to the unworthy becomes a terrible means of enjoyment.
