अनन्तपङ्क्तिपक्षीन्द्रा मुनिश्छन्दः सुरा मताः
Anantapaṅkti, Pakṣīndra, the sage Chandas, and the gods are considered.
ज्वलज्वल महामन्त्री स्वाहा हृदयमीरितम्
The great mantra 'Jvala Jvala' with 'svāhā' is declared for the heart.
शिरोमन्त्रो गरुडतः शिखे स्वाहा शिखा मनुः
The head mantra is from Garuḍa; for the topknot, the mantra is 'svāhā', and for the crest, the mantra is 'śikhā'.
प्रभेदययुगं पश्चाद्वित्रासय विमर्दय
Then, recite the pair of mantras for breaking through, for dispelling fear, and for crushing.
उग्ररूपधरान्ते तु सर्वविषहरेति च
At the end, with a fierce form, recite: 'Destroy all poison.'
भस्मीकुरु ततः स्वाहा नेत्रमन्त्रो ऽयमीरितः
Then, recite: 'Reduce to ashes, svāhā'—this is declared as the eye mantra.
शासनान्ते तथा हुं फट् स्वाहास्त्रमनुरीरितः
At the end of the command, recite: 'huṃ phaṭ svāhā'—this is the weapon mantra as declared.
पादे कटौ हृदि मुखे मूर्ध्निं वर्णान्प्रविन्यसेत्
One should arrange the syllables at the feet, the hips, the heart, the mouth, and the head.
चञ्च्वग्रप्रचलद्भुजङ्गमभयं पाण्योर्वरं बिभ्रतं पक्षोच्चारितसामगीतममलं श्रीपक्षिराजं भजे
I worship the glorious king of birds, whose beak's tip holds a moving serpent in check, who grants fearlessness with his hands, whose wings resound with the pure chanting of Sāma hymns.
पूजयेन्मातृकापीठे गरुडं वेदविग्रहम्
One should worship Garuḍa, the embodiment of the Veda, at the seat of the Mothers.
दृष्ट्वाङ्गं कर्णिकामध्ये नागान्यन्त्रेषु पूजयेत्
Having seen the form in the center of the pericarp, one should worship the serpents in the mechanisms.
देहान्ते लभते चापिश्रीविष्णोः परमं पदम्
At the end of the body, one attains the supreme abode of glorious Viṣṇu.
प्राप्तं भगवतः साक्षाच्छूलिनो युगलात्मकम्
The direct presence of the Lord, the wielder of the trident, was attained, manifesting as a pair.
इत्युक्तो नारदो विप्राः कुमारेण तु धीमता
Thus addressed by the wise Kumāra, Nārada spoke, O brāhmaṇas.
ततश्चिरं ध्यानपरो नारदो भगवत्प्रियः
Then, for a long time, Nārada, beloved of the Lord, devoted himself to meditation.
भगवन्सर्ववृत्तान्तः पूर्वकल्पसमुद्बवः
O Lord, you know all events, arising from the previous kalpa.
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य नारदस्य महात्मनः
Having heard the words of that great-souled Nārada,
शृणु विप्र प्रवक्ष्यामि यस्मिञ्जन्मनि शूलिनः
Hear, O brāhmaṇa, I will tell you in which birth the trident-holder—
अस्मात्सारस्वतात्कल्पात्पूर्वस्मिन्पञ्चविंशके
In the previous twenty-fifth kalpa, from this Sarasvatī kalpa—
तत्रैकदा त्वं कैलासं प्राप्तः कृष्णस्य योगिनः
There, once, you reached Kailāsa, the abode of the yogin Kṛṣṇa.
त्वया पृष्टो महादेवो रहस्यं स्वप्रकाशितम्
When you questioned, the great Lord revealed the secret openly.
ततस्तदन्ते तु पुनस्त्वया विज्ञापितो हरः
Then, at the end of that, you again made a request to Hara.
गोपीजनपदस्यान्ते वल्लभेति पदं ततः
At the end of the land of the gopīs, the word 'Vallabhā' was then uttered.
मन्त्रस्यास्य ऋषिः प्रोक्तो सुरभिश्छन्द एव च
The seer of this mantra is said to be Surabhi, and its meter as well.
प्रपन्नो ऽस्मीति तद्भक्तौ विनियोग उदाहृतः
The application in devotion is declared as: 'I have taken refuge.'
केवलं चिन्तनं सद्यो नित्यलीलाप्रकाशकम्
Mere contemplation at once reveals the eternal play.
आभ्यन्तरस्य धर्मस्य साधनं वच्मि सांप्रतम्
Now I shall speak of the means for the inner dharma.
कृपां तदीयां निजधर्मसंस्थो विभावयन्नात्मनि तोषयेद्गुरुम्
Established in one's own dharma, perceiving His mercy within, one should please the guru.
ऐहिकामुष्मिकीचिन्ताविधुरान् सिद्धिदायकान्
Free from anxieties about this world or the next, they grant success.
भर्त्सनादिकमेतेषां न कदाचिद्विचिन्तयेत्
One should never consider rebuke or the like for these.
