विभूष्य भूषणैर्देवं पुनः स्नाप्यमहेश्वरम्
Having adorned the deity with ornaments, Maheshvara is to be bathed again.
वस्त्रं तथोपवीतं च गन्धद्रव्यकमेव च
Then cloth and sacred thread, and also fragrant substances.
तूष्णीमथोपचारं वा कालीयं पुष्पमेव च
Then, in silence, or with offerings, or with a Kali flower.
अनेकद्रव्यधूपं च गुग्गुलं केवलं तथा
And with incense of many substances, and also with pure guggul.
धूपं दत्वा यथाशक्ति कपिलाघृतदीपकान्
Having offered incense as one is able, and lamps of clarified butter from a tawny cow.
नैवेद्यमुपपन्नं च दत्वा पुष्पसमन्वितम्
Having offered suitable food, accompanied by flowers.
प्रदक्षिणनमस्कारौ पूजैवं हि समाप्यते
Circumambulation and prostration—thus the worship is completed.
गीतिर्वाद्यं पुराणं च नृत्यं हासोक्तिरेव च
Singing, instrumental music, recitation of Purana, dancing, and words of joy.
क्षमापनं चोद्रसनं प्रोक्तं पञ्चोपचारकम्
The acts of asking forgiveness and offering food are said to be the fivefold forms of worship.
उपवीत च कैकर्यं षोडशानुपचारकान्
The sacred thread and service are accompanied by sixteen forms of offering.
एकेनाह्ना समस्तानां पातकानां क्षयो भवेत्
By performing all these in a single day, the destruction of all sins takes place.
एवमेतत्कपिश्रेष्ठ युदुक्तं पूजनं मम
Thus, O best of monkeys, I have described to you the worship due to me.
आराधनं यथालिङ्गे विस्तरेण त्वयोदितम्
The method of propitiation, as pertains to the emblem, has been explained by you in detail.
ततः प्राह कपिश्रेष्ठो देवदेवमुमापतिम्
Then the chief of monkeys addressed the god of gods, the consort of Umā.
तां करोमि पुरा देव पश्चात्त्वत्पादपूजनम्
O God, I shall perform that first, and afterwards worship your feet.
सरसस्तीरमागत्य कृत्वा सैकतवेदिकाम्
Coming to the bank of the lake, he made an altar of sand.
प्रक्षाल्य पादौ हस्तौ च समाचम्य समाहितः
He washed his feet and hands, and, having purified himself, became composed.
देववेद्यामथो चक्रे पद्मं च सुमनोहरम्
Then he prepared the divine altar and a most beautiful lotus.
प्राणानायम्य संन्यस्य शुल्कध्यानसमन्वितः
Restraining his breath and withdrawing his senses, he was absorbed in meditation on the fee.
अथ देवार्यनं कर्त्तुं यत्नमास्थितवान्कपिः
Then the monkey undertook the effort to perform the worship of the god.
शिरः कमण्डलुगतं निधायाग्निनिमन्त्रितम्
Placing on his head water from the water-pot, sanctified by mantras to Agni,
अथ स्नापयितुं देवमादाय करसंपुटे
Then, to bathe the god, he took water in the hollow of his hands.
लिङ्गमात्रं करगतं दृष्ट्वा भीतिसमन्वितः
Seeing only the emblem in his hand, he was filled with fear.
यदेतत्पीठरहितं शिवलिङ्गं करस्थितम्
That Śiva-liṅga, without a pedestal, was resting in his hand.
अथ रुद्रं जपिष्यामि तदायति महेश्वरः
Then he resolved, 'I will recite the Rudra hymn,' and thus invoked Maheśvara.
यदा तु न समायातो महेशो ऽथ कपीश्वरः
But when Maheśa did not appear, then the lord of monkeys—
किमर्थं रुद्यते भद्र रुदिते कारणं वद
Why are you weeping, O blessed one? Tell me the reason for your tears.
पीठहीनमिदं लिङ्गं पश्य मे पापसंचयम्
See, this liṅga is without a pedestal; behold my accumulation of sin.
यदि नायाति पीठं ते लिङ्गे मा साहसं कुरु
If the pedestal does not come to your liṅga, do not act rashly.
पश्य दर्शय मे लिङ्गं पीठं चात्रागतं न वा
Look, show me the liṅga and whether the pedestal has arrived here or not.
