ओमित्युक्त्वाथ भगवांस्तूष्णींभूतो ऽभवद्ध्वरिः
Saying 'Om', the blessed Hari became silent.
अर्थयामि विनिष्कामं मम पूजाव्रतं तथा
I request, without desire, my worship and vow as well.
तच्छ्रत्वा शङ्करो देवः स्मित्वा प्राह वपीश्वरम्
Hearing this, Śaṅkara, the lord, smiled and spoke to the lord of the pond.
को गुरुः कश्च मन्त्रस्ते कीदृशं पूजन तथा
Who is your teacher, what is your mantra, and what kind of worship is it?
वेपमानसमस्ताङ्ग स्तोतुमेवं प्रचक्रमे
Trembling in all his limbs, he began to praise thus.
योरिने योगधात्रे च योगिनां गुरवे नमः
Salutations to you, the origin and sustainer of yoga, the guru of yogis.
वेदानां पतये तुभ्यं देवानां पतये नमः
Salutations to you, lord of the Vedas, lord of the gods.
अष्टमूर्ते नमस्तुभ्यं पशूनां पतये नमः
Salutations to you, O eight-formed one, lord of creatures.
सुभृङ्गराजधत्तूरद्रोणपुष्पप्रियस्य ते
To you, who delights in the flowers of dhattūra, droṇa, and the king of bees, salutations.
नमस्ते ऽस्तु नमस्ते ऽस्तु भूय एव नमोनमः
Salutations to you, salutations to you, again and again, salutations.
ततस्त्यक्त्वा भयं प्राह हनुमान् वाक्यकोविदः
Then, abandoning fear, Hanumān, skilled in speech, spoke.
दिवा संपादितैस्तैयैः पुष्पाद्यैरपि तादृशैः
By day, with those flowers and similar offerings, worship is performed.
सायङ्काले तु संप्राप्ते अशिरःस्नानमाचरेत्
When evening arrives, one should bathe without washing the head.
अथ भस्म समादाय आग्नेयं स्नानमाचरेत्
Then, taking ashes, one should perform the fire-rite bath.
पञ्चाक्षरेण मन्त्रेण नाम्ना वा येन केनचित्
With the five-syllabled mantra or by any name whatsoever,
ईशानः सर्वविद्यानामुक्त्वा शिरसिपातयेत्
Let one invoke Īśāna, the lord of all knowledge, and place it upon the head.
अघोरेभ्यो ऽथ घोरेभ्यो भस्म वक्षसि निक्षिपेत्
Then, uttering 'Aghorebhyo' and 'Ghorebhyo,' place the ashes upon the chest.
सद्योजातं प्रपद्यामि निक्षिपेदथ पादयोः
Having taken refuge in Sadyojāta, place it next upon the feet.
त्रैवर्णिकानामुदितऋ स्नानादिविधिरुत्तमः
For those of the three castes, this prescribed procedure for bathing and related rites is supreme.
शिवेति पदमुञ्चार्य भस्म संमन्त्रयेत्सुधीः
Reciting the word 'Śiva,' the wise should consecrate the ashes with mantra.
शङ्कराय मुखे प्रोक्तं सर्वज्ञाय हृदि क्षिपेत्
For Śaṅkara, utter it at the mouth; for the omniscient one, place it in the heart.
उच्चार्य पादयोः क्षिप्त्वा भस्म शुद्ध्वमतः परम्
Having pronounced it and placed the ashes upon the feet, thereafter one becomes purified.
प्रक्षाल्य हस्तावाचम्य दर्भपाणिः समाहितः
After washing the hands and rinsing the mouth, holding darbha grass, one should be attentive.
तदभावे तु दूर्वाः स्युस्तदभावे तु राजतम्
If that is unavailable, use dūrvā grass; if that too is lacking, use silver.
देववेदीमथो वापि कल्पितं स्थण्डिलं तु वा
Either the divine altar or a prepared sthaṇḍila may be used.
चातुर्वर्णकरं गैश्च श्वेतेनैकेन वा पुनः
A cāturvarṇa-kara may be made with cows, or with a single white one again.
उत्पलादिगदाशङ्खत्रिशूलडमरूंस्तथा
Lotus and other objects, mace, conch, trident, and drum likewise,
सर्वकामफलं वृक्षं कुलकं कोलकं तथा
A tree yielding all desired fruits, a kulaka, and a kolaka as well,
कोणे द्वादशकान्दोलापादुकाव्यजनानि च
In the corners, twelve swings, sandals, and fans also,
चूर्णैविरचयेद्वेद्यां धीमान्देवालये ऽपि वा
Let the wise arrange these on the altar with powders, or even in a temple.
