What sin was committed by him, for which this head was severed?
Indeed, my own death is certain, for the teacher was disguised as a disciple.
Wherever death is seen, there our death is also inevitable.
I will revive this Bhārgava, dear to Śaṅkara.
While the foremost of Brahmins was speaking thus, Gautama also died.
Learning of his killing in this way, Prahlāda and the other chiefs of the Daityas—
Then the strength of that wise Bāṇa was destroyed.
Honored by Gautama through the worship of Maheśa, the mighty one was worshipped.
Alas, how terrible, how exceedingly terrible! Many of Maheśa’s devotees have been slain.
Having resolved thus, he went to the imperishable Mandara mountain.
There, Śiva spoke these words to Brahmā and Hari, who were present.
Going, I will see, O Viṣṇu, all that has been done by him.
With Nandī, splendidly attired, holding a most beautiful parasol,
Having obtained the consent of Maheśa, Hari stood at the serpent's end.
With Śiva's approval, Brahmā too then mounted upon a swan.
Indra and all the other gods, each accompanied by their own vehicle,
Surrounded by countless multitudes, they went to Gautama's hermitage.
He revived his devotee by gazing from the left side.
Hearing those words, Gautama spoke with respect.
May I always have the ability to worship your emblem, O Lord.
This disciple of mine is greatly fortunate, free from faults of acceptance and rejection.
O Lord of gods, it is not to be smelled, not to be drunk, nor anything else.
He is called 'Śaṅkara's self'—mad, deformed in appearance.
O God, grant me this: immortality for the dead as well.
The Lord of the world entered the body by his own portion, through the wind.
By turns, the supreme Lord is called directly Viṣṇu, Śiva, the highest.
He acts according to my command, is devoted to Rāma, and worships the image.
This dwelling, spacious and well-established, has been made by you.
Having been worshipped, we shall depart to our own abodes thereafter.
O Lord, the petitioner asks for what is unfit; he does not see the fault.
