दीपं प्रज्वालयेत्तत्र गणेशस्मृतिपूर्वकम्
One should light the lamp there, preceded by remembrance of Ganesha.
तण्डुलाष्टदले वापि विधिवत्स्थापयेद्धूटम्
Or, on an eight-petaled rice arrangement, one should properly place the dhūṭa.
जलाक्षतान्समादाय दीपं संकल्पयेत्ततः
Taking water and akṣatā, then one should consecrate the lamp.
प्रणवः पाशमाये च शिखा कार्ताक्षराणि च
The syllable praṇava, the noose, māyā, the śikhā, and the kartā letters.
बाहवे इति वर्णान्ते सहस्रपदमुच्चरेत्
At the end of the syllable 'bāhave', one should utter the thousand-petaled mantra.
आत्रेयायानुसूयान्ते गर्भरत्नाय तत्परम्
At the end of 'Ātreya', 'Anusūyā', and 'garbharatna', that supreme mantra.
दीपं गृहाण अमुकं रक्ष रक्ष पदं पुनः
Take the lamp, recite 'amukaṃ', and again utter 'protect, protect' and the mantra.
शत्रून् जहिद्वयं माया तारः स्वं बीजमात्मभूः
Destroy the enemies, dispel the two māyās, utter the syllable 'tāra', your own seed, and 'ātmabhūḥ'.
भिमुखेनामुकं रक्ष अमुकान्ते वरप्रद
Facing the lamp, recite 'amukaṃ', and at the end of 'amuka', utter 'granting boons'.
वेदादिकामचामुण्डाः स्वाहा तु पूसबिन्दुकौ
The Vedas, desires, and Cāmuṇḍā; 'svāhā' and the syllables 'pūsa' and 'bindu'.
दत्तात्रेयो मुनिर्मालामन्त्रस्य परिकीर्तितः
Dattātreya the sage is proclaimed as the garland-mantra's seer.
चामुण्डया षडङ्गानि चरेत्षड्दीर्घयुक्तया
With Cāmuṇḍā, one should perform the six limbs, using the six long syllables.
गोविन्दाढ्यो हली सेंदुश्चामुण्डाबीजमीरितम्
Govinda, Halī, Sendu, and the seed of Cāmuṇḍā are declared.
तारो ऽनन्तो बिन्दुयुक्तो मायास्वं वामनेत्रयुक्
The syllable 'tāra' is endless, joined with bindu, māyā, and one's own, with the eye of Vāmana.
ऋषिः पूर्वोदितोनुष्टुप्छन्दो ऽन्यत्पूर्ववत्पुनः
The seer is as previously stated; the meter is Anuṣṭubh, as before, and the rest is likewise as before.
एवं दीपप्रदानस्य कर्ताप्नोत्यखिले ऽप्सितम्
In this way, the one who offers a lamp attains all that is desired.
विप्रस्य दर्शनं तत्र शुभदं परिकीर्तितम्
The sight of a brāhmaṇa there is said to be auspicious.
आख्वोत्वोर्दर्शनं दुष्टं गवाश्वस्य सुखावहम्
The sight of a crow or an owl is inauspicious, but that of a cow or a horse brings happiness.
शब्दा भयदा कर्तुरुज्ज्वला सुखदा मता
Sounds that are bright and pleasing are considered to bring happiness to the performer, while frightening sounds are not.
कृते दीपे यदा पात्रं भग्नं दृश्यते दैवतः
If, when the lamp is made, the vessel of the deity is seen to be broken—
वर्त्यतरं यदा कुर्यात्कार्यं सिद्ध्येद्विलंबतः
If the wick is made too thick, the task will be accomplished only with delay.
अशुचिस्पर्शने व्याधिर्दीपनाशे तु चौरभीः
If touched by something impure, there will be disease; if the lamp is extinguished, there will be fear of thieves.
पात्रारंभे वसुपलैः कृतो दीपो ऽखिलेष्टदः
A lamp made at the beginning in a vessel of gold or silver grants all that is desired.
आसमाप्तेः प्रकुर्वीत ब्रह्मचर्यं च भूशयः
Until the completion, one should observe celibacy and sleep on the ground.
जपेत्सहस्रं प्रत्येकं मन्त्रराजं नवाक्षरम्
One should recite the king of mantras, the nine-syllabled one, a thousand times for each lamp.
एकपादेन दीपाग्रे स्थित्वा यो मन्त्रनायकम्
Standing on one foot before the lamp, whoever recites the chief mantra—
समाप्य शोभनदिने संभोज्य द्विजसत्तमान्
Having completed it on an auspicious day, one should feed the best of twice-born men.
कर्ता तु दक्षिणां दद्यात्पुष्कलां तोषहेतवे
The performer should give abundant gifts as a means of satisfaction.
गुर्वाज्ञया स्वयं कुर्याद्यदि वा कारये द्गुरुः
One should do it by the guru’s command, or the guru may have it done by another.
गुर्वाज्ञामन्तरा कुर्याद्यो दीपं स्वेष्टसिद्धये
Whoever makes the lamp for the fulfillment of their wishes without the guru’s command—
