अपराधसहस्राणि क्रियन्ते ऽहर्न्निशं मया
Thousands of offenses are committed by me day and night.
आवाहनं न जानामि न जानामि विसर्जनम्
I do not know how to invoke, nor do I know how to dismiss.
संप्रार्थ्यैवं ततो मन्त्री मूलान्ते श्लोकमुञ्चरेत्
Thus having prayed, the priest should recite the verse at the end of the root mantra.
यन्न ब्रह्मादयो देवा जानन्ति च सदाशिवः
That which even Brahma and the other gods do not know, nor does Sadashiva,
निधाय देवं सांगं च स्वीयदृत्सरसीरुहे
Having placed the deity, with its limbs, in the lotus of one’s own heart,
शङ्खचक्रशिलालिङ्गविघ्नसूर्यद्वयं तथा
The conch, discus, stone, linga, obstacles, and the two suns likewise,
अकालमृत्युहरणं सर्वव्याधिविनाशन्
The removal of untimely death, the destruction of all diseases,
सर्वपापक्षयकरं विष्णुपादोदकं शुभम्
The holy water from Vishnu’s feet brings about the destruction of all sins.
अग्राह्यं शिवनिर्माल्यं पत्रं पुष्पं फलं जलम्
Unaccepted are the remnants of Shiva, leaf, flower, fruit, and water.
पूजा पञ्चविधा तत्र कथिता नारदाखिलैः
The fivefold worship is thus described here by Narada in its entirety.
दौर्बोधी च क्रमादासां लक्षणानि शृणुषअव मे
Now listen from me to the characteristics of these obstacles, which are difficult to understand, in their proper order.
विलोक्य पूजां देवस्य मूर्तिं वा सूर्य्यमण्डलम्
Having seen the worship of the deity, or the image, or the solar disc,
रोगे निवृत्ते स्नात्वाथ नत्वा संपूञ्चेद्गुरुम्
When illness has ceased, one should bathe, then bow, and respectfully approach the teacher.
पूजाविच्छेददोषो मे मास्त्विति प्रार्थयेच्च तम्
One should also request him, saying, 'May the fault of interrupting worship not be mine.'
तेभ्यश्चाशिषमादाय देवं प्राग्वत्ततोर्ऽचयेत्
Having received blessings from them, one should then worship the deity as before.
सूतकं द्विविधं प्रोक्तं जाताख्यं मृतसंज्ञकम्
Impurity is said to be of two kinds: that called birth and that called death.
मनसैव यजेद्देवं मनसैव जपेन्मनुम्
One should worship the deity mentally, and recite the mantra mentally as well.
तेभ्यश्चाशिषमादाय ततो नित्यक्रमं चरेत्
Having received blessings from them, one should then perform the daily rites.
दुष्टेभ्यस्त्रासमापन्नो यथालब्धोपचारङ्कैः
If afflicted by wicked beings, one should use whatever means of worship are available.
पूजासाधनवस्तूनाम सामर्थ्ये तु सर्वतः
If one is able in all respects to obtain the materials for worship,
साधनाभाविनी ह्येषा दौर्बोधीं शृणु नारद
But if the means are lacking, hear now, O Nārada, about the obstacle that arises.
यथाज्ञानकृता सा तु दौर्बोधीति प्रकीर्तिता
That which is caused by ignorance is indeed called an obstacle.
देवपूजाविहीनो यः स गच्छेन्नरकं ध्रुवम्
He who neglects the worship of the deity surely goes to hell.
देवे निवेदितं पश्चाद्भुञ्जीत स्वगणैः स्वयम्
After offering to the deity, one may then partake of the food with one's own group.
पुराणमितिहासं च शृणुयात्स्वजनैः सह
One should listen to Purāṇas and ancient tales together with one's family.
न सांगशयिकं तस्य दुर्मतेर्जायते फलम्
No complete result arises for the wicked-minded from such conduct.
यान्समाराध्य विप्रेन्द्र साधको भुक्तिमुक्तिमान्
O best of Brāhmins, by worshipping whom does the practitioner attain enjoyment and liberation?
स्मृतिर्मांसेंदुमन्वाढ्या सा पुनश्चन्द्रशेखरा
That remembrance, rich in the essence of meat and soma, is again of the moon-crested one.
सर्वान्ते जनमुञ्चार्य ततो मे वशमानय
At the end of all, having recited the japa, then bring it under my control.
गणको ऽस्य मुनिश्छन्दो गायत्री वियुदादिका
The seer of this is Gaṇaka, the meter is Chandas, and the beginning is Gāyatrī.
