One who initiates, who performs the consecration, who conducts the sacraments, O best of friends,
These are declared to be gurus, worthy of honor and to be respectfully saluted.
All these are indeed equal, O Sarave; tell me this properly.
Narrating the greatness of the guru, listening to it, and giving approval—
All these are always worthy of equal honor; there is no doubt about this.
Those who teach the Vedas and those who explain the mantras likewise,
The learned one who recites the Purāṇas imbued with righteousness,
The acts worthy of worshipping the gods, and the fruit of worshipping the deities,
The Purāṇas, O king, are the essence of the meanings of all the Vedas.
The person who makes an effort to cross the ocean of worldly existence,
All the dharmas have been declared in the Purāṇas, O king.
The Purāṇas, O wise one, are indeed for happiness in this world and the next.
His mind becomes pure, and he is ever devoted to righteousness.
O King, among devotees of Vishnu, discernment toward righteousness arises.
Those who desire the fruits of righteousness, wealth, pleasure, and liberation—
As for me, I am the one who, out of pride, spoke against the all-knowing sage Gautama.
Once, I went to perform worship of the Supreme Lord.
That Gautama, tranquil and of great wisdom, was a treasury of brilliance.
The god Shiva, teacher of the entire universe, whom I worshipped—
Whoever, knowingly or unknowingly, shows disrespect to the teacher—
But the person who serves the teacher with reverence—
By that curse, I was burned within by the fire of hunger.
As the best of Brahmins was speaking thus, in that banyan tree, during the night—
At that moment, a certain very righteous Brahmin arrived.
Carrying Ganga water on his shoulder, he was praising the Lord of the universe.
Seeing that sage arrive, those two— the piśāca and the rākṣasa—
Were unable to attack him, and the rākṣasas said this:
Because of the greatness of name-chanting, we rākṣasas have gone far away.
O Brahmin, the covering of the divine Name protects you from great danger.
By the glory of the infallible Lord, they attained supreme peace.
