मातरः सर्वभूतानामापो देव्यः पुनन्तु माम्
Mothers of all beings, O divine waters, purify me.
क्षालयन्ति च तां स्पर्शादापो देव्यः पुनन्तु माम्
By their touch they cleanse; O divine waters, purify me.
ललाटे कर्णयोरक्ष्णोरापस्तद्धन्तु वो नमः
On the forehead, ears, and eyes—may the waters remove that; homage to you.
सन्तोषः क्षान्तिरास्तिक्यं विद्या भवतु वो नमः
Contentment, forbearance, faith, and knowledge—may these be yours; homage to you.
पिबेद्धिरुद्धं नो कुर्यादेषां तु नियतो विधिः
He should not drink it while holding the breath; this is the prescribed rule for them.
स्वेष्टदेवं समुद्वास्य मन्त्री मार्तण्डमण्डले
Having invoked his chosen deity, the chanter in the solar circle—
वाससी परिधायाथ कुर्यात्सन्ध्यादिकं सुधीः
Having put on clean garments, the wise person should then perform the sandhyā and related rites.
अथवा भस्मना स्नातो रजोभिश्चैव वाक्षमः
Alternatively, one who has bathed with ashes or with dust and is self-controlled—
केशवेन तथा नारायणेन माधवेन च
—with the names Keśava, Nārāyaṇa, and Mādhava—
मधुसूदनत्रिविक्रमाभ्यामोष्ठौ च मार्जयेत्
—should cleanse the lips with the names Madhusūdana and Trivikrama.
हृषीकेशपद्मनाभाभ्यां स्पृशेञ्चरणौ ततः
Then, with the names Hṛṣīkeśa and Padmanābha, one should touch the feet.
वासुदेवेन प्रद्युम्नेन स्पृशेन्नासिके ततः
Next, with the names Vāsudeva and Pradyumna, one should touch the nostrils.
अधोक्षजनृसिंहाभ्यां श्रवणे संस्पृशेत्तथा
Likewise, with the names Adhokṣaja and Nṛsiṃha, one should touch the ears.
हरिणा विष्णुनांसौ च वैष्णवाचमनं त्विदम्
With the names Hari and Viṣṇu, this is called Vaiṣṇava ācāmana.
मुखे नसोः प्रदेशिन्यानामया नेत्रकर्णयोः
At the mouth, nostrils, index fingers, eyes, and ears—
आत्मविद्याशिवैस्तत्त्वैः स्वाहान्तैः शैवमीरितम्
—with the principles of self-knowledge and Śiva, ending with 'svāhā,' the Śaiva rite is declared.
आत्मविद्यासिवैरेव शैवं स्वाहावसानिकैः
With the principles of self-knowledge and Śiva alone, and endings such as 'svāhā' and 'vasāna,' the Śaiva rite is performed.
वाग्लज्जाश्रीमुखैः प्रोक्तं द्विजाचमनमर्थदम्
The ācāmana for twice-borns, which brings benefit, is prescribed with the words for speech, modesty, and prosperity.
नन्दकं हृदये शङ्खचक्रे चैव भुजद्वये
One should meditate on Nandaka at the heart, and the conch and discus on both arms.
कर्णमूले पार्श्वयोश्च पृष्टे नाभौ ककुद्यपि
At the root of the ears, on both sides, on the back, at the navel, and even on the hump (of the back)—
अग्निहोत्रोद्भवं भस्म गृहीत्वा त्र्यंबकेण तु
Taking ash produced from the agnihotra, with the name Tryambaka—
क्रमात्तत्पुरुषाघोरसद्योजातादिनामभिः
—and successively with the names Tatpuruṣa, Aghora, Sadyojāta, and others—
शैवं शाक्तस्त्रिकोणा भं नारीवद्वा समाचरेत्
The Śaiva or Śākta should perform the triangle mark, or as is proper for a woman.
आचम्य विधिवन्मन्त्री तीर्थान्यावाह्य पूर्ववत्
Having performed ācāmana according to rule, the mantrin should invoke the sacred waters as before.
सप्तधा तज्जलेनाथ मूर्द्धानमभिषेचयेत्
Then, O Lord, one should consecrate the head with that water seven times.
आदाय वामहस्तेंऽबु दक्षेणाच्छाद्य पाणिना
Taking water in the left hand, and covering it with the right palm,
मूलेन तस्मात् श्चोतद्भिर्बिन्दुभिस्तत्त्वमुद्रया
With drops falling from the root, using the gesture of truth,
कृत्वा तदक्षरं मन्त्री नासिकान्तिकमानयेत्
Having made that syllable, the officiant should bring it near the tip of the nose.
प्रक्षाल्यान्तर्गतं तेन कल्मषं तज्जलं पुनः
By means of that, he should wash away the inner impurity; then, again, with that water,
क्षिपेदस्त्रेण तत्पश्चात्कल्पिते कुलिशोपले
He should cast it away with a weapon, afterwards, upon a prepared thunderbolt-stone.
