व्यवसायादृते ब्रह्मन्नासादयति तत्पदम्
Without steadfast resolve, O Brahman, one does not attain that state.
नौत्सुक्यं नृत्यगीतेषु न राग उपजायते
No excitement arises in dance or song, nor does attachment arise.
पश्यामित्वां महाभाग तुल्यनिन्दात्मसंस्तुतिम्
O greatly fortunate one, I see you praising and blaming yourself equally.
आस्थितं परमं मार्गे अक्षयं चाप्यनामयम्
You have taken up the supreme path, which is imperishable and free from affliction.
तस्मिन्वै वर्तसे विप्रकिमन्यत्परिपृच्छसि
Indeed, you dwell in that; O sage, what else do you inquire about?
आत्मनात्मानमास्थाय दृष्ट्वा चात्मानमात्मना
Relying upon yourself, and perceiving yourself by yourself.
शैशिरं गिरिमासाद्य पाराशर्यं ददर्श च
Having reached the cool mountain, he also saw Parāśarya.
आरर्णेयो विशुद्धात्मा दिवाकरसमप्रभः
Ārarṇeya, pure in mind and radiant like the sun.
ततो निवेदयामास पितुः सर्वमुदारधीः
Then, the noble-minded one reported everything to his father.
तच्छत्वा वेदकर्तासौ प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना
Having heard this, that maker of the Vedas rejoiced inwardly.
समालिङ्ग्य सुतं व्यासः स्वपार्श्वस्थं चकार च
Vyāsa embraced his son and placed him at his side.
शैलशृङ्गाद्भुवं प्राप्ता याजनाध्यापने रताः
Those devoted to ritual and teaching descended from the mountain peak to the earth.
तूर्ष्णीं ध्यानपरो धीमानेकान्ते समुपाविशत्
Silent and absorbed in meditation, the wise one sat alone.
भो भो महर्षे बासिष्ठ ब्रह्मघोषो न वर्तते
O great sage Vasiṣṭha, the sound of Brahman does not resound.
ब्रह्मघोषैर्विरहितः पर्वतो ऽयं न शोभते
Deprived of the sounds of Brahman, this mountain does not shine.
वेदान्वेदविदा चैव सुप्रसन्नमनाः सदा
Always serene in mind, knowing the Vedas and their meaning.
शुकेन सह पुत्रेण वेदाभ्यासमथाकरोत्
He practiced the study of the Vedas together with his son Śuka.
वातो ऽतिमात्रं प्रववौ समुद्रानिलवीजितः
The wind blew exceedingly, stirred by the ocean breeze.
शुको वारितमात्रस्तु कौतूहलसमन्वितः
Śuka, though checked, was filled with curiosity.
आख्यातुमर्हति भवान्सर्वं वायोर्विचैष्टितम्
You ought to recount everything regarding the wind’s movements.
अनध्यायनिमित्तऽस्मिन्निदं वचनं मब्रवीत्
On account of this interruption to study, this statement was spoken.
तमसा रजसा चापि त्यक्तः सत्ये व्यवस्थितः
He, having abandoned darkness and passion, stands firmly in truth.
देवयानचरो विष्णोः पितृयानश्च तामसः
The path of the gods belongs to Viṣṇu; the path of the ancestors is of darkness.
पिथिव्यामन्तरिक्षे च यतः संयान्ति वायवः
On earth and in the atmosphere, wherever the winds go,
तत्र देवगणाः साध्याः समभूवन्महाबलाः
There, the hosts of gods called Sādhyas, mighty in strength, came into being.
उदानस्तस्य पुत्रो ऽभूव्द्यानस्तस्याभवत्सुतः
Udāna became his son, and Dyāna was born as his son.
अनपत्यो ऽभवत्प्राणो दुर्द्धर्षः शत्रुमर्दनः
Prāṇa, invincible and destroyer of enemies, was without offspring.
प्राणिनां सर्वतो वायुश्चेष्टा वर्तयते पृथक्
The wind, in all living beings, separately maintains their activities.
प्रेषयत्यभ्रसंघातान्धूमजांश्चोष्मजांस्तथा
He sends forth masses of clouds, as well as those born of smoke and heat.
अंबरे स्नेहमात्रेभ्यस्तडिद्भ्यश्चोत्तमद्युतिः
In the sky, from mere traces of moisture, and from lightning, he produces supreme brilliance.
