पञ्चाङ्गशुद्धिराहित्यं दोषस्त्वाद्यः प्रकीर्तितः
The absence of purity in the five limbs (pañcāṅga) is declared as the first fault.
तृतीयः पापषड्वर्गो भृगुः षष्टः कुजो ऽष्टमः
The third is the group of six malefic influences; Venus in the sixth, Mars in the eighth.
दंपत्योरष्टमं लग्नं राशिर्विषघटी तथा
The ascendant in the eighth from either spouse, or the sign associated with poison, are also faults.
ग्रहणोत्पातभं क्रूरविद्धर्क्षं क्रूरसंयुतम्
An eclipse, an evil omen, a cruelly aspected sign, or conjunction with malefics are faults as well.
तिथिवारर्क्षयोगानां करणस्य च मेलनम्
The combination of lunar day, weekday, constellation, yoga, and karaṇa is also to be considered.
यस्मिन्पञ्चाङ्गदोषो ऽस्ति तस्मिंल्लग्ने निरर्थकम्
If there is a fault in any of the five limbs, the ascendant at that time is fruitless.
लग्नलग्नांशकौ स्वस्वपतिना वीक्षितौ युतौ
If the ascendant and its corresponding division are aspected or joined by their respective lords,
वरस्य मृत्युः स्यात्ताभ्यां सप्तसप्तोदयांशकौ
Death of the groom may result if both the seventh and its corresponding division are so aspected.
त्याज्याः सूर्यस्य संक्रान्तेः पूर्वतः परतस्तथा
The period before and after the Sun's ingress should be avoided.
षड्वर्गः शुभदः श्रेष्ठो विवाहसथापनादिषु
The sixfold division that bestows auspiciousness is excellent for marriage, installation, and similar rites.
उच्चगे शुभसंयुक्ते तल्लग्नं सर्वदा त्यजेत्
Even if the ascendant is exalted and joined with benefics, that ascendant should always be avoided.
शुभत्रययुतं लग्नं न त्यजेत्तुङ्गगो यदि
An ascendant joined with three benefics should not be avoided, unless it is in exaltation.
गण्डान्तं मृत्युदं जन्मयात्रोद्वाहव्रतादिषु
The end of the Gaṇḍānta period brings death; it is present at birth, journey, marriage, vows, and similar occasions.
गण्डातंमन्तरालं स्याद्धटिकार्द्धं मृतिप्रदम्
The interval up to the end of Gaṇḍānta, amounting to half a ghaṭikā, causes death.
तदग्निमेष्वाद्यपादा भानां गण्डातसंज्ञकाः
Those lunar mansions beginning with Agni and ending with Apāda are known as Gaṇḍānta.
लग्नाभिमुखयोः पापग्रहयोरृजुवक्रयोः
When malefic planets, whether direct or retrograde, face the ascendant,
कर्तरीयोगदुष्टं यल्लग्नं तत्परिवर्जयेत्
If the ascendant is afflicted by the Kartarī-yoga, that ascendant should be avoided.
षडष्टरिष्फगे चन्द्रे लग्नदोषः स्वसंज्ञकः
When the Moon is in the sixth or eighth house, it is called a defect of the ascendant, bearing its own name.
उच्चगे नीचगे वापि मित्रभे शत्रुराशिगे
Whether exalted, debilitated, in a friendly sign, or in an enemy's sign,
शशाङ्के ग्रहसंयुक्ते दोषः संग्रहसंज्ञकः
If the Moon is joined with a planet, the defect is called by the name of that planet.
सूर्येण संयुते चन्द्रे दारिद्यं भवति स्फुटम्
When the Moon is conjoined with the Sun, poverty certainly arises.
दौर्भाग्यं गुरुणा युक्ते सापत्यं भार्गवेण तु
When joined with Jupiter, misfortune occurs; with Venus, loss of offspring results.
केतुना संयुते चन्द्रे नित्यं कष्टं दरिद्रता
When the Moon is joined with Ketu, there is always suffering and poverty.
शुभग्रहयुते चन्द्रे स्वोच्चस्थे मित्रराशिगे
When the Moon is joined with benefic planets, or is exalted, or in a friendly sign,
स्वोच्चगो वा स्वर्क्षगो वा मित्र क्षेत्रगतोपि वा
Whether exalted, in its own sign, or in a friend's sign or house,
दंपत्योरष्टमं लग्नमष्टमो राशिरेव च
The eighth ascendant or the eighth sign from the ascendant of the couple,
स राशिः शुभसंयुक्तो लग्नं वा शुभसंयुतम्
If that sign is joined with benefics, or the ascendant is joined with benefics,
दंपत्योर्द्वादशं लग्नं राशिर्वा यदि लग्नगः
If the twelfth ascendant or sign from the ascendant of the couple is occupied by the ascendant,
जन्मराश्युदयश्चैव जन्मलग्नोदयः शुभः
The birth sign and the rising sign, as well as the birth ascendant and its rising, are auspicious.
खमार्गणा वेदपक्षाः खरामा वेदमार्गणाः
