आशिषो वाचनं कार्यं पुण्यं पुण्याङ्गनादिभिः
Blessings should be spoken, and merit accrued, by women of virtue and others.
तत्र मृदततस्तीक्ष्णा गृहीत्वा पुनरागतः
There, having taken clay and then a sharp instrument, one should return again.
अनेकबीजसंयुक्तं तोयं पुष्पाभिशोभितम्
Water mixed with many seeds, adorned with flowers,
राज्ञा मेकादशे मैञ्जीबन्धनं द्वादशे विशाम्
For a king, the tying of the tuft is on the eleventh day; for others, on the twelfth.
उपवीती यतः श्रीमान्कार्यं तत्रोपनायनम्
When he is invested with the sacred thread and is prosperous, the initiation should be performed there.
यथोक्तवत्सरे कार्यमनुक्ते नोपनायनम्
The initiation should be performed in the prescribed year; if not prescribed, it should not be done.
वेदानामधिपा जीवशुक्रभौमबुधाः क्रमात्
The lords of the Vedas are, in order: the Moon, Venus, Mars, and Mercury.
मुख्यं साधारणं तेषां तपोमासादिपञ्चसु
Among them, the principal and common times are the five months beginning with Tapas.
विधिज्ञश्चार्थवांश्चैत्रे वेदवेदाङ्गपारगः
One who knows the rites, is learned, and has mastered the Vedas and Vedāṅgas, should perform it in the month of Caitra.
उपनीतो बलाढ्यश्च ज्येष्ठे विधिविदां वरः
He who is initiated and endowed with strength and wealth, the best among those who know the rites, should do so in Jyeṣṭha.
त्रयोदशी च दशमी सप्तमी व्रतबन्धने
The thirteenth, tenth, and seventh lunar days are for the tying of the vow.
कृथष्णे द्वित्रीषुसंख्याश्च तिथ्यो ऽन्या ह्यतिनिन्दिताः
Other lunar days, except the second, third, and sixth, are highly censured.
विष्णुत्रयांश्विमित्राब्जयोनिभान्युपनायने
At the initiation, the portions of Vishnu, the three, Mitra, and the lotus-born are considered.
अष्टादशं समुदयं त्रयोविंशं विनाशनम्
The eighteenth is the collection, and the twenty-third is the destruction.
आचार्यसौम्यकाव्यानां वाराः शस्ताः शशीनयोः
The days for the teachers and gentle poets are auspicious during the waxing and waning of the moon.
त्रिधा विभज्य दिवसं तत्रादौ कर्म दैविकम्
Dividing the day into three parts, at the beginning, the divine rites are performed.
स्वनीचगे तदंशे वा स्वारिभे वा तदंशके
When in its own debilitation, or in its own portion, or in the portion of its enemy.
स्वाधिशत्रुगृहस्थे वा तदंशस्थे ऽथ वा व्रती
Or when situated in the house of its own adversary, or in its own portion, or in the portion of the ascetic.
स्वोच्चसंस्थे तदंशे वा स्वराशौ राशिगे गणे
When established in its own exaltation, or in its own portion, or in its own sign, or in the group of signs.
अतीव धनवांश्चैव वेदवेदाङ्गपारगः
He becomes exceedingly wealthy and accomplished in the Vedas and their branches.
व्रती विशुद्धे निधने वेदशास्त्रविशारदः
The ascetic, when pure at the end, is an expert in the Vedas and scriptures.
गुरौ भृगौ वा शाखेशे विद्याधनसमन्वितः
When with the teacher, or with Bhrigu, or with the lord of the branch, he is endowed with knowledge and wealth.
शआखाधिपतिलग्नं च दुर्लभं त्रितयं व्रते
The conjunction with the branch-lord at the ascetic's ascendant is rare in threefold asceticism.
पापांशगे वा दरिद्रो नित्यदुःखितः
When in the portion of sin, he is poor and always afflicted with sorrow.
तदा व्रती वेदशास्त्रधनधान्यसमृद्धिमान्
Then the ascetic is endowed with Vedic knowledge, wealth, and abundant grain.
लग्ने तु निधने सौम्यैः संयुते वा निरीक्षिते
When at the ascendant or at the end, joined or observed by gentle ones.
स्थानादिबलसंपूर्णैश्चतुर्भिर्वा शुभान्वितैः
Or with four, complete in position and strength, and accompanied by auspicious ones.
राशयः सकलाः श्रेष्ठाः शुभग्रहयुतेक्षिताः
All the signs are excellent when observed by auspicious planets.
न कदाचित्कर्कटांशशुभेक्षितयुतो ऽपि वा
Never, even when joined with the auspicious aspect of Cancer's portion.
एवंविधे लग्नगते नवांशे व्रतमीरितम्
In this way, when the ascendant is in the ninth portion, the ascetic vow is declared.
