तारका न हिता मासा मधूर्जशुचिपौषकाः
The stars are not favorable in the months of Māgha, Jyeṣṭha, Śuci, and Pauṣa.
कुलटा पापभोगेषु निन्द्यर्क्षे निन्द्यवासरे
An unchaste woman, indulging in sin, on censured stars and censured days—
सुवर्णगोतिलान्दद्यात्सर्वदोषापनुत्तये
One should give gold, cows, and sesame to remove all faults.
ओजराश्यंशगे चन्द्रे लग्ने पुङ्ग्रहवीक्षिते
When the Moon is in a sign of strength, and the ascendant is aspected by male planets—
पुत्रार्थी पुरुषशस्त्यक्त्वा पौष्णमूलाहिपित्र्यभम्
A man desiring a son should avoid the lunar mansions of Puṣya, Mūla, Āśleṣā, and Pitṛ.
मासे पुंसवनं कार्यं सीमन्तं च यथा तथा
In that month, the Puṃsavana rite should be performed, and likewise the Sīmantonnayana.
बलोपपन्ने दंपत्योश्चन्द्रताराबलान्विते
When both husband and wife possess strength, and the Moon and stars are endowed with power,
तीक्ष्णमिश्रार्कवर्ज्येषु पुंभांशेरात्रिनायके
when the fierce and mixed Sun is absent, and the night is ruled by a male planet,
शुभग्रहयुते दृष्टे पापदृष्टिविवर्जिते
when a benefic planet is present and visible, and malefic aspects are absent,
पापेषु सत्सु चन्द्रेत्यनिधनाद्यरिवर्जिते
when malefic planets are present but the Moon is free from death, adversity, and enemies,
सीमन्तिनीं वा तद्गर्भं बली हॄन्ति न संशयः
then, without doubt, a powerful one takes away the pregnant woman or her fetus.
जातकर्म प्रकर्तव्यं पितृपूजनपूर्वकम्
The birth ceremony must be performed, preceded by honoring the ancestors.
नामपूर्वं प्रशस्तं स्यान्मङ्गलैः सुसमीक्षितैः
A proper and auspicious name should be given, carefully considered for good omens.
अनस्तगे भृगावीज्ये तत्कार्ये चोत्तरायणे
When the Moon is not waning, in the asterism of Bṛhaspati, and during the northern course of the Sun, that rite should be performed.
चन्द्राताराबलोपेते दिवसे च शिशोः पितुः
On a day endowed with the strength of the Moon and stars, and that of the child's father,
षष्टे मास्यष्टमे वापि पुंसां स्त्रीणां तु पञ्चमे
for boys, in the sixth or eighth month; for girls, in the fifth month,
रिक्तां दिनक्षयं नन्दां द्वादशीमष्टमीमथ
on a day that is not empty, not the end of the lunar day, nor Nandā, nor the twelfth or eighth lunar day,
चरस्थिरमृदुक्षिप्रनक्षत्रे शुभनैधने
when the lunar mansion is movable, fixed, gentle, or ascending, and at an auspicious time of death,
पूर्वार्द्धे सौम्यखेटेन संयुक्ते वीक्षितेपि वा
in the first half, when joined with or seen by a benefic planet,
व्ययारिनिधनस्थे च चन्द्रे ऽन्नप्राशनं शुभम्
when the Moon is in the houses of loss, enemy, or death, the feeding of solid food is auspicious.
बालानां जन्मतश्चौलं स्वगृह्योक्तविधानतः
The shaving of the child's hair from birth should be done according to the procedure prescribed in one's own Gṛhya-sūtra.
अपर्वरिक्तातिथिषु शुक्रेज्यज्ञेन्दुवासरे
Not on parvan days, nor on empty lunar days, but on Fridays, during sacrifices, or on days ruled by the Moon,
चौलकर्मणि हस्तक्षार्र्त्रीणित्रीणि च विष्णुभात्
the rite of shaving the head should be performed on three nights, as prescribed by Viṣṇu.
शुभदं जन्मनक्षत्रमशुभं त्वन्यकर्मणि
The birth star is auspicious for the shaving ceremony, but inauspicious for other rites.
जन्माष्टमे न शीतांशौ षष्टाष्टान्त्यविवर्जिते
On the eighth day from birth, when the Moon is not in the sixth, eighth, or final lunar mansion,
अभ्यक्ते सन्ध्ययोर्नारे निशि भुक्त्वा न वाहवे
Not at twilight, nor at night, nor after eating, nor during a journey,
क्षौरकर्म महीपानां पञ्चमेपञ्चमे ऽहनि
The ritual of shaving for princes is to be performed every fifth day.
नृपविप्राज्ञया यज्ञे मरणे बन्धमोक्षणें
By the order of the king, a learned Brahmin, or a wise man, at a sacrifice, at death, or at release from bondage,
कर्तव्यं मङ्गलेष्वादौ मङ्गलाय क्षुरार्पणम्
