वरं ददावपत्यार्थमौर्वो भार्गवमन्त्रवित्
Aurva, the Bhārgava knower of mantras, granted a boon for the sake of offspring.
केशितीं सुमतिं चैव इदमाह प्रहर्षयम्
He spoke these words, delighting Keśinī and Sumati.
अपत्यार्थं महाभागे वृणुतां च यथेप्सितम्
For the sake of offspring, O highly fortunate ones, choose whatever you desire.
केशिन्येकं सुतं वव्रे वंशसन्तानकारणम्
Keśinī chose one son, for the continuation of the lineage.
नाम्नासमञ्जाः केशिन्यास्तनयो मुनिसत्तम
The son of Keśinī, O best of sages, was named Samañja.
तं दृष्ट्वा सागराः सर्वे ह्यासन्दुर्वृत्तचेतसः
Seeing him, all the Sagaras became of wicked disposition.
चिन्तयामास विधिवत्पुत्रकर्म विगर्हिनम्
He began to ponder, according to rule, the condemned rite for sons.
कारुकैस्ताड्यते वह्णिरयःसंयोगमात्रतः
Fire is struck by smiths merely by contact with iron.
शास्त्रज्ञो गुणवान्धर्मी पितामहहिते रतः
He was learned in the scriptures, virtuous, righteous, and devoted to the welfare of his ancestors.
अनुष्टानवतां नित्यमन्तराया भवन्ति ते
Obstacles always arise for those who are engaged in observances.
बुभुजे तानि सर्वाणि निराकृत्य दिवौकसः
Having cast aside the gods, he enjoyed all those things.
भजन्ति सागरास्ता वै कचग्रहबलात्कृताः
Those very oceans, forced by the power of the Kacagraha, serve him.
भूषयन्ति स्वदेहानि मद्यपानपरायणाः
Devoted to drinking wine, they adorn their own bodies.
मित्रैश्च योद्रुमारब्धा बलिनो ऽत्यन्तपापिनः
Together with their friends, those exceedingly sinful and powerful ones began to uproot the yodruma trees.
विचारं परमं चक्रुरेतेषुं नाशहेतवे
They deliberated deeply about the means for their destruction.
कपिलं देवदेवेशं ययुः प्रच्छन्नरुपिणः
Disguised in hidden forms, they went to Kapila, lord of the gods and lords.
प्राणम्य दण्डवद्रूमौ तुष्टुवुव्रिदशास्ततः
Having bowed down, prostrating themselves like trees, the gods then praised him.
नररुपप्रतिच्छिन्नविष्णवे जिष्णवे नमः
Salutations to Viṣṇu, concealed in human form, the victorious one.
संसारारण्यदावाग्रे धर्मपालनसेतवे
Who is the bridge for protecting dharma at the edge of the blazing forest of worldly existence.
सागरैः पीडितानस्मांस्त्रायस्व शरणागतान्
Save us, who have taken refuge, from the oceans that torment us.
त एव लोकान्बाधन्ते नात्राश्वार्यं सुगेतमाः
Those very ones trouble the worlds; there is no hope for happiness here.
तं विद्यात्सर्वलोकेषु पापभोगरतं सुराः
Let the gods know him in all the worlds as one who delights in sinful enjoyments.
तं हन्ति दैवमेवाशु नात्र कार्या विचारणा
The divine must quickly destroy him; there should be no further deliberation here.
प्रणम्य तं यथान्यायं गता नाकं दिवौकसः
Having properly bowed to him, the gods went to heaven.
आरेभे हयमेधाख्यं यज्ञं कर्त्तुमनुत्तमम्
He undertook the supreme sacrifice known as the horse-sacrifice.
पाताले स्थापयामास कपिलो यत्र तिष्टति
Kapila placed him in the netherworld, where he himself abides.
अन्वेष्टुं बभ्रभुर्लोकान् भूरादींश्च सुविस्मिताः
Amazed, they searched the worlds, beginning with the earth.
चख्नुर्महीतलं सर्वमेकैको योजनं पृथक्
Each one separately dug up the entire surface of the earth, a yojana at a time.
तद्वारेण गताः सर्वे पातालं सगरात्मजाः
Through that opening, all the sons of Sagara entered the netherworld.
विचिन्वन्ति हयं तत्र मदोन्मत्ता विचेतसः
There, intoxicated and bewildered, they searched for the horse.
