शब्दाः सिद्धा वैदिकास्तु लौकिकाश्चापि नारद
Words established, Vedic, and also worldly, O Nārada.
लघुमार्गेण शब्दानां साधूनां संनिरूपणम्
By the concise method, the determination of proper words.
प्रकृतिप्रत्ययादेशलोपागममुखैः कृतम्
Made by means of base, suffix, substitution, elision, and addition.
कात्स्न्येर्न वक्तुमानन्त्यात्को ऽपिशक्तो न नारद
Due to their entirety and infinitude, no one is able to speak them all, O Nārada.
यस्य विज्ञान मात्रेण धर्मसिद्धिर्भवेन्नृणाम्
By whose mere knowledge, the accomplishment of dharma arises for people.
गणितं जातकं विप्र संहितास्कन्धसंज्ञिताः
Calculation, horoscope, O Brāhmaṇa, and collections known as Skandha.
अनुयोगश्चन्द्रसूर्यग्रहणं तचोदस्याकम्
Inquiry, lunar and solar eclipses, and likewise the Udāsya.
जातके राशिभेदाश्च ग्रहयोनिश्च योनिजम्
In the horoscope, the divisions of signs, the origin of planets, and the birth-related.
कर्माजीवं चाष्टवर्गो राजयोगाश्च नाभसाः
Action, life, the eight groups, royal yogas, and celestial ones.
ग्रहभावफलं चैवाश्रययोगप्रकीर्णके
The result of planetary positions, and the mixed yogas of support.
नष्टजन्मविधानं च तथा द्रेष्काणलक्षणम्
The determination of lost birth, and likewise the characteristics of the Dreṣkāṇa.
तिथिवासरनक्षत्रयोगतिथ्यर्द्धसंज्ञकाः
The conjunctions of lunar day, day, star, and those known as half-tithi.
चन्द्रता राबलं चैव सर्वलग्रार्तवाह्वयः
The waxing and waning of the moon, and likewise the so-called seasons of all the lunar mansions.
चौलङ्कर्ण्ययणं मैञ्जी क्षुरिकाबन्धनं तथा
The first cutting of hair, the piercing of the ears, the tonsure, the tying of the knife, and so on.
यात्राप्रवेशनं सद्योवृष्टिः कर्मविलक्षणम्
The beginning of a journey, entering a place, sudden rain, and actions of a special kind.
एकं दश शतं चैव सहस्रायुतलक्षकम्
One, ten, a hundred, a thousand, ten thousand, and a hundred thousand.
निरवर्व च महापद्मं शङ्कुर्जलधिरेव च
The 'niravara', the 'mahāpadma', and likewise the 'shaṅku' and the ocean itself.
क्रमादुत्क्रमतो वापि योगः कार्योत्तरं तथा
Whether in order or out of order, the combination is to be made according to the result required.
शुद्धेद्धरोयद्गुणश्चभाज्यान्त्यात्तत्फलं मुने
When the divisor is pure, O sage, the quotient is to be multiplied by the last remainder, and that is the result.
अन्त्यात्तु विषमात्त्यक्त्वा कृतिं मूलंन्यसेत्पृथक्
But when the last is odd, leaving aside the odd, one should set the root separately.
तत्कृतिं च त्यजेद्विप्र मूलेन विभजेत्पुनः
And that product, O Brahmin, should be abandoned, and divided again by the root.
समत्र्यङ्कहतिः प्रोक्तो घनस्तत्रविधिः पदे
The operation called 'samatra' is declared; the rule for the solid is in the place.
विशोध्यं विषमादन्त्याद्धनं तन्मूलमुच्यते
The wealth must be purified by the odd from the last; that is called the root.
तत्कृतित्वेन निहतान्निघ्नीं चापि विशोधयेत्
By that product, one should purify what has been struck down, and also the 'nighnī'.
अन्योन्यहारनिहतौ हरांशौ तु समुच्छिदा
In the mutual taking and striking down, the shares are to be exactly cut off.
भागप्रभागे विज्ञेयं मुने शास्रार्थचिन्तकैः
The proportion in the shares should be understood, O sage, by those who reflect on the meaning of the science.
भागास्तलस्थहारेण हरं स्वांशाधिकेन तान्
By taking away the shares from the total, one should assign to them their own increased shares.
कार्यस्तुल्यहरां शानां योगश्चाप्यन्ततो मुने
When the shares are equal, the combination is to be made at the end, O sage.
अंशाहतिश्छेदघातहृद्भिन्नगुणने फलम्
The result comes from the operation of subtracting, cutting, striking, and multiplying the differing shares.
शेषः कार्यो भागहारे कर्तव्यो गुणनाविधिः
The remainder should be taken in the division of shares; the rule of multiplication must be applied.
