निमन्त्रयीत पूर्वेद्युर्ब्राह्मणानात्मवान् शुचिः
He should invite the Brāhmaṇas the day before, being self-controlled and pure.
अपराह्ने समघभ्यर्च्य स्वागतेनागतांस्तु तान्
In the afternoon, after worshipping without fault, he should welcome those who have arrived.
विप्रान्दैवे यथाशक्ति पित्र्ये ऽयुग्मांस्तथैव च
Brāhmaṇas for divine rites as able, and for ancestral rites, those not paired likewise.
द्वौ द्वैवे प्राक् त्रयः पित्रघ्ये उदगेकैकमेव च
Two for each divine rite, three for ancestral offerings, and one for water rites.
पाणिप्रक्षालनं दत्त्वा विष्टरार्थं कुशानपि
After giving water for hand-washing, he should also give kuśa grass for seating.
यवैरन्वावकीर्याथ भाजने सपवित्रके
Then, he should sprinkle barley in the vessel together with the purifying ring.
यादिव्या इति मन्त्रेण हस्ते पाद्यं विनिःक्षिपेत्
With the mantra 'yā divyā', he should pour water for washing the feet into the hand.
अपसव्यं ततः तृत्वा पितॄणां सप्रदक्षिणम्
Then, having made it apasavya, he should circumambulate the ancestors with the right.
आवाह्य तदनुज्ञातो जपेदायन्तु नस्ततः
Having invoked them and received their consent, he should recite, 'May they come to us now.'
दत्त्वार्ध्यं सयवांस्तेषां पात्रे कृत्वा विधानतः
He should offer arghya with barley to them, placing it in the vessel according to the proper rule.
अग्नौ करिष्यन्नादाय पृच्छत्यन्नं घृतप्लुतम्
Intending to offer into the fire, he takes clarified butter-soaked food and asks for it.
हुतशेषं प्रदद्यात्तु भाजनेषु समाहितः
He should attentively distribute the remainder of the oblation into the vessels.
दत्त्वान्नं पृथिवीपात्रमिति पात्रा भिमन्त्रणम्
Having given the food, he should say, 'This is the vessel of the earth,' thus consecrating the vessel.
सव्याहृतिकां गायत्रीं मधुवाता इति त्यृचम्
He should recite the Gāyatrī with the vyāhṛtis and the Ṛc beginning 'madhuvātā'.
अग्नमिष्टं हविप्यं च दद्यादक्रोधनो ऽत्वरः
Without anger or haste, he should offer the oblation intended for Agni and the sacrificial food.
अन्नमादाय तृप्ताःस्थ शेषं चैवानुमान्य च
Having taken the food, when they are satisfied, and having received permission regarding the remainder,
सर्वमन्नमुपादाय सतिलं दक्षिणामुखः
He should take all the food, with sesame, facing south.
मातामहानामप्येवं दद्यादाचमनं ततः
In the same way, he should offer water for sipping to the maternal ancestors.
दत्त्वा च दक्षिणां शक्त्या स्वधाकारमुदाहरेत्
Having given the gift according to his ability, he should utter the svadhā formula.
ब्रूयुरस्तु स्वधेत्युक्ते भूमौ सिंचेत्ततो जलम्
When 'svadhā' is spoken, they should say 'may it be so,' and then he should pour water on the ground.
दातारोनो ऽभिवर्द्धन्तां वेदाः संततिरेव च
May the donors increase, and may the Vedas and lineage flourish.
इत्युक्तो क्ताः प्रिया वाचः प्रणिपत्य विसर्जयेत्
When thus addressed with kind words, he should bow and dismiss them.
यस्मिंस्ते संश्रवाः पूर्वमर्ध्यपात्रे निवेशिताः
In whichever vessel the arghya was first placed for them,
प्रदक्षिणमनुव्रज्य भुञ्जीत पितृसेवितम्
He should follow them in a circle and then partake of the food offered to the ancestors.
एवं प्रदक्षिणावृत्त्या वृद्धौ नान्दीमुखान्पितॄन्
In this way, by circumambulation, he should honor the Nāndīmukha ancestors in the rite for increase.
एकोद्दिष्टं देवहीनमेवार्ध्यैकपवित्रकम्
For a single ancestor, for one who is divine, he should offer arghya with a single pavitra.
उपतिषअटतामक्षय्यस्थाने विप्रविसर्जने
At the time of the unending rite, when the Brahmin is dismissed,
गन्धोदकं तिलैर्युक्तं कुर्यात्पात्रचतुष्टयम्
One should prepare four vessels of scented water mixed with sesame seeds.
ये समाना इति द्वाभ्यां शेषं पूर्ववदाचरेत्
For those who are equals, with two, the remainder should be performed as before.
अर्वाक्सपिण्डीकरणं यस्य संवत्सराद्भवेत्
For whom the sapinda-relationship arises within a year,
