शक्तितो ऽपि यथा लाभं सत्कृत्य विधिपूर्वकम्
According to one's ability and as obtained, these should be offered with respect and in accordance with the prescribed rules.
कृष्णागौरायसं छाग एता वै दक्षिणाः स्मृताः
Black iron, gold, and a goat are considered as the prescribed gifts.
ब्रह्मन्नेषां वरो दत्तः पूजिताः पूजयिष्यथः
O Brahmin, the best among these has been given; those who are worshipped, you should worship.
भावाभावौ च जगतस्तस्मात्पूज्यतमा ग्रहाः
Because existence and non-existence in the world depend on them, the planets are most worthy of worship.
महागणपतेश्चैव कुर्वन्सिद्धिमवान्पुयात्
By worshipping Mahāgaṇapati, one attains success and is purified.
कर्मणां सफलत्वं च श्रियं वाप्नोत्यनुत्तमाम्
He attains the fulfillment of actions and unsurpassed prosperity.
कुप्यन्ति मातरस्तस्य प्रत्यूहं कुर्वते तथा
If this is neglected, the Mothers become angry and create obstacles.
गौर्याद्या मातरः पूज्या माङ्गल्येषु शुभार्थिभिः
Gaurī and the other Mothers should be worshipped by those desiring auspiciousness at ceremonies for good fortune.
देवसेना स्वधा स्वाहा मातृका वैधृतिर्धृतिः
Devasenā, Svadhā, Svāhā, the Mothers, Vaidhṛti, and Dhṛti—
गणेशेनाधिका ह्येता वृद्धौ पूज्यास्तु षोहश
These are especially honored by Gaṇeśa and, when increased, should be worshipped together.
अक्षतांश्चैव पुष्पाणि धूपं दीपं फलानि च
Unbroken grains, flowers, incense, lamps, and fruits.
नीराजनं दक्षिणां च क्रमाद्दद्याञ्च तुष्टये
One should offer arati and a gift in order, for satisfaction.
अमावस्याष्टका वृद्धिः कृष्णपक्षायनद्वयम्
The new moon, the aṣṭakā, increase, and the two dark fortnights.
व्यतीपातो गजच्छाया ग्रहणं चन्द्रसूर्ययोः
Vyatipāta, elephant's shadow, and eclipses of the moon and sun.
अग्र्याः सर्वेषु वेदेषु श्रोत्रियो ब्रह्मविद्युवा
Foremost among all in the Vedas is the learned youth versed in Brahman.
स्वस्रीय ऋत्विग्जामाता याज्यश्वशुरमातुलाः
One's sister's son, officiating priest, son-in-law, sacrificer's father-in-law, and maternal uncle.
कर्मनिष्टास्तपोनिष्टाः पञ्चाग्निब्रह्मचारिणः
Those devoted to ritual, those devoted to austerity, the five-fire sacrificers, and celibates.
रोगी न्यूनातिरिक्ताङ्गः काणः पौनर्भवस्तथा
The sick, those with deficient or excessive limbs, the one-eyed, and the remarried.
भृतकाध्यापकः क्लीबः कन्यादूष्यभिशस्तकः
The hired teacher, the impotent, the one who defiles a maiden, and the one who is cursed.
मातृपितृगुरुत्यागी कुण्डाशी वृषलात्मजः
One who abandons mother, father, or teacher; one who eats from a pit; and the son of a śūdra.
निमन्त्रयीत पूर्वेद्युर्ब्राह्मणानात्मवान् शुचिः
He should invite the Brāhmaṇas the day before, being self-controlled and pure.
अपराह्ने समघभ्यर्च्य स्वागतेनागतांस्तु तान्
In the afternoon, after worshipping without fault, he should welcome those who have arrived.
विप्रान्दैवे यथाशक्ति पित्र्ये ऽयुग्मांस्तथैव च
Brāhmaṇas for divine rites as able, and for ancestral rites, those not paired likewise.
द्वौ द्वैवे प्राक् त्रयः पित्रघ्ये उदगेकैकमेव च
Two for each divine rite, three for ancestral offerings, and one for water rites.
पाणिप्रक्षालनं दत्त्वा विष्टरार्थं कुशानपि
After giving water for hand-washing, he should also give kuśa grass for seating.
यवैरन्वावकीर्याथ भाजने सपवित्रके
Then, he should sprinkle barley in the vessel together with the purifying ring.
यादिव्या इति मन्त्रेण हस्ते पाद्यं विनिःक्षिपेत्
With the mantra 'yā divyā', he should pour water for washing the feet into the hand.
अपसव्यं ततः तृत्वा पितॄणां सप्रदक्षिणम्
Then, having made it apasavya, he should circumambulate the ancestors with the right.
आवाह्य तदनुज्ञातो जपेदायन्तु नस्ततः
Having invoked them and received their consent, he should recite, 'May they come to us now.'
दत्त्वार्ध्यं सयवांस्तेषां पात्रे कृत्वा विधानतः
He should offer arghya with barley to them, placing it in the vessel according to the proper rule.
