स्वमेव गाहतेत्यर्थं जलं मुण्डांश्च पश्यति
For the purpose of entering his own abode, he sees water and shaven-headed ones.
अन्त्यजैर्गर्द्दभैरुष्टैः सहैकत्रावतिष्टते
He dwells together with outcastes, donkeys, and camels.
व्रजन्नपि तथात्मानं मन्यते ऽनुगतं परैः विमना विफलारंभः संसीदत्यनिमित्ततः
Even while going, he thinks himself followed by others; disheartened, his undertakings fail, and he sinks without cause.
आचार्यत्वं श्रोत्रियश्च न शिष्यो ऽध्ययनं तथा
Neither the status of teacher nor that of a learned one, nor the student, nor study, is present.
गौरसर्ष पकल्केन स्वस्ति वाच्या द्विजैः शुभाः
With cow's ghee and mustard, let the Brahmins utter auspicious blessings.
मृत्तिकां रोचनां गन्धान् गुग्गुलुं चाशु निक्षिपेत्
One should promptly place clay, yellow pigment, fragrant substances, and guggulu incense.
चर्मण्यानुडुहे रक्ते स्थाप्यं भद्रासनं ततः
On a red hide of a castrated animal, the auspicious seat should then be set.
तेन त्वामभिषिञ्चामि पावमान्याः पुंनतु ते
With this, I anoint you; may the purifying waters cleanse you.
भगमिन्द्रश्च वायुश्च भगं सप्तर्षयो ददुः
Bhaga, Indra, and Vayu, along with the seven sages, have bestowed prosperity.
ललाटे कर्णयोरक्ष्णोरापस्तुदन्तु सर्वदा
May the waters always protect your forehead, ears, and eyes.
जुहुयान्मूर्द्धनि कुशान्सव्यन परिगृह्य च
One should offer sacred grass on the head, holding it with the left hand.
कूष्माण्डो राजपुत्र श्चेत्यन्ते स्वाहासमान्वितैः
Recite 'Kūṣmāṇḍa', 'Rājaputra', and similar mantras, each accompanied by 'svāhā'.
दद्याञ्चतुष्पथे सूर्य्ये कुशानास्तीर्य्य सर्वतः
At a crossroads, facing the sun, spread sacred grass in all directions.
मत्स्यान्पक्वांस्तथैवामान्मांसमेतावदेवतु
Offer both cooked and uncooked fish, as well as meat, in the same manner.
मूलकं पूरिकापूपांस्तथैवोटस्रजो ऽपि च
Likewise, offer radish, fried cakes, sweet cakes, and also garlands of shoots.
एतान्सर्वानुपाहृत्य भूमौ कृत्वा ततः शिरः
Having brought all these, place them on the ground, and then bow your head.
दुर्वासर्षपपुष्पाणां दत्त्वार्घ्यं पूर्णमञ्जलिम्
Offer a full handful of water mixed with durva grass, mustard, and flowers.
पुत्रान्देहि धनं देहि सर्वान्कामांश्च देहि मे
Grant me sons, grant me wealth, grant me all my desires.
धूपैदर्पिश्चै नैवेद्यैर्गन्धमाल्यानुलेपनैः
With incense, lamps, offerings of food, fragrant garlands, and ointments,
ब्राह्मणान्भोजयेत्पश्चाद्वस्त्रयुगमं गुरोरपि
Afterwards, one should feed the Brahmins and also give a pair of garments to the teacher.
श्रीकामः शान्तिकामो वा पुष्टिवृद्ध्यायुर्वीर्य्यवान्
Whether desiring prosperity, peace, strength, growth, long life, or vigor,
राहुकेतू नवाप्येते नवाप्येते स्थापनीया ग्रहाः क्रमात्
Rahu, Ketu, and the nine planets—these nine should be established in order.
हेम्नो रजतादयसः सीसात्कार्या शुभाप्तये
Objects made of gold, silver, and other metals, as well as of lead, are to be used for the attainment of auspiciousness.
यथावर्णं प्रदेयानि वासांसि कुसुमानि च
Garments and flowers should be offered according to their appropriate colors.
कर्तव्या मन्त्रवन्तश्च चरवः प्रतिदैवतम्
Oblations accompanied by mantras should be performed for each respective deity.
उद्बुधअयस्वाति यदर्यस्तथैवान्नात्परिस्रुतः
The prescribed offerings are: udbudha, svāti, yadarya, and likewise rice that has flowed over.
शन्नोदेवीस्तथा काण्डात्केतुं कृण्वन्नकेतवः
One should also offer śanna, the goddess, and from the stalk, making a banner, as well as banners.
उदुंबरः शमी दूर्वा कुशाश्च समिधः क्रमात्
Uduṃbara, śamī, dūrvā, and kuśa are to be used as fuel sticks, in order.
होतव्या मधुसर्पिर्भ्यां दध्ना क्षीरेण वा पुनः
Offerings should be made with honey and clarified butter, or again with curd or milk.
दध्योदनं हविश्चूर्णं मांसं चित्रान्नमेव च
Curd-rice, powdered oblations, meat, and also various kinds of food are to be offered.
