पूर्वं तु सर्वशाखं स्यात्पञ्चशाखं तथापरम्
First, there should be a vessel with all branches; then one with five branches.
पलाशश्चैव विज्ञेयाः स्रुवे चैव तथा स्रुचि
Palāśa wood is to be known for the sruva and likewise for the sruc.
विप्राणां चैतदाख्यातं ह्यन्येषामङ्गुलोनकम्
This is declared for Brāhmaṇas; for others, it is less by a finger-width.
दृष्टिदोषविनाशार्थं पात्राणां प्रोक्षणं स्मृतम्
Sprinkling the vessels is prescribed for the removal of visible defects.
तस्मिन्पूर्णीकृते विप्र यज्ञसंपूर्णता भवेत्
When it is filled, O Brāhmaṇa, the completion of the sacrifice is achieved.
पुष्कलानि तु चत्वारि पूर्णपात्रं विदुर्बुधाः
The wise know that four full vessels are abundant.
दत्ते तृप्तोभवेद्वह्निः शापं दद्याञ्च दारुणम्
When the offering is given, the fire becomes satisfied; otherwise, it may bestow a harsh curse.
प्राजापत्यं मुखं प्रोक्त कटिर्व्याहृतिभिः स्मृता
The mouth is called prājāpatya, and the waist is known by the sacred utterances.
तथा स्विष्टकृतं विप्र श्रोत्रे पूर्णाहुतिस्तथा
Similarly, O Brahmin, sviṣṭakṛta is in the ear, and pūrṇāhuti is likewise.
द्विशीर्षकं च षण्नेत्रं पिङ्गलं सप्तजिह्वकम्
It is two-headed, six-eyed, tawny-colored, and has seven tongues.
स्रुक्स्त्रुवौ चाक्षमाला च या शक्तिर्दक्षिणे करे
The ladle, the spoon, the rosary, and the power held in the right hand.
मेषारूढं चतुःशृङ्गं बालादित्यसमप्रभम्
Mounted on a ram, with four horns, shining like the young sun.
ज्ञात्वैवमग्निदेहं तु होमकर्मसमाचरेत्
Knowing thus the form of Agni, one should perform the ritual of offering.
जुहुयाद्यस्तु हस्तेन स विप्रो ब्रह्महा भवेत्
He who offers with his hand becomes a Brahmin who has slain Brahman.
सर्वकामसमृद्ध्यर्थं तिलाधिक्यं हविर्मतम्
For the fulfillment of all desires, an abundance of sesame is prescribed for the offering.
अभिचारे सूकरी स्यान्मृगी हंसी शुभात्मके
In sorcery, the offering should be of a sow, a deer, or a swan of auspicious nature.
मध्यमानामिकाङ्गुष्टैर्मृगी सुद्रा प्रकीर्तिता
The deer offering is declared to be made with the middle, ring, and thumb fingers.
दधिमध्वाज्यसंयुक्त ऋत्विग्भिर्जुहुयात्तिलैः
The priests should offer sesame mixed with curd, honey, and ghee.
कुशास्त्वनामिकासक्ताः कार्याः स्युः पुण्यकर्मणि
Kusha grass attached to the ring finger should be used in virtuous rites.
गणानामाधिपत्ये च रुद्रेण ब्रह्मणा तथा
For the lordship of the hosts, by Rudra and also by Brahma.
स्वमेव गाहतेत्यर्थं जलं मुण्डांश्च पश्यति
For the purpose of entering his own abode, he sees water and shaven-headed ones.
अन्त्यजैर्गर्द्दभैरुष्टैः सहैकत्रावतिष्टते
He dwells together with outcastes, donkeys, and camels.
व्रजन्नपि तथात्मानं मन्यते ऽनुगतं परैः विमना विफलारंभः संसीदत्यनिमित्ततः
Even while going, he thinks himself followed by others; disheartened, his undertakings fail, and he sinks without cause.
आचार्यत्वं श्रोत्रियश्च न शिष्यो ऽध्ययनं तथा
Neither the status of teacher nor that of a learned one, nor the student, nor study, is present.
गौरसर्ष पकल्केन स्वस्ति वाच्या द्विजैः शुभाः
With cow's ghee and mustard, let the Brahmins utter auspicious blessings.
मृत्तिकां रोचनां गन्धान् गुग्गुलुं चाशु निक्षिपेत्
One should promptly place clay, yellow pigment, fragrant substances, and guggulu incense.
चर्मण्यानुडुहे रक्ते स्थाप्यं भद्रासनं ततः
On a red hide of a castrated animal, the auspicious seat should then be set.
तेन त्वामभिषिञ्चामि पावमान्याः पुंनतु ते
With this, I anoint you; may the purifying waters cleanse you.
भगमिन्द्रश्च वायुश्च भगं सप्तर्षयो ददुः
Bhaga, Indra, and Vayu, along with the seven sages, have bestowed prosperity.
ललाटे कर्णयोरक्ष्णोरापस्तुदन्तु सर्वदा
May the waters always protect your forehead, ears, and eyes.
