असूयाविसृष्टमनसस्तस्य राज्ञः परैः सह
The mind of that king, released by envy, along with others—
हैहयैस्तालजङ्घैश्च रिपुभिः स पराजितः
was defeated by the Haihayas, Tāla-jaṅghas, and other enemies.
अवाप परमां तुष्टिं तत्र दृष्ट्वा महत्सरः
There, seeing the great lake, he attained supreme satisfaction.
सरोगतविहङ्गास्ते लीनाश्चित्रमिदं महत्
All the birds afflicted by disease hid themselves; this is a great wonder.
विशन्तस्त्वरया वासमित्यूचुस्ते विहङ्गमाः
The birds, entering swiftly, said, 'Let us dwell here.'
पीत्वा जलं च सुखदं वृक्षमूलमुपाश्रितः
Having drunk the pleasant water, they took shelter at the root of a tree.
दुर्गुणान्विगणय्यास्यधिग्धिगित्यब्रुवन्प्रजाः
Counting the faults, the people said, 'Fie! Fie!' and departed.
सर्वसंपत्समायुक्तो ऽप्यगुणीनिन्दितो जनैः
Though endowed with all prosperity, one is reviled by people for faults.
संतुष्टिं परमां याता दवथौ विगते यथा
They attained supreme contentment, just as when fever has departed.
निहत्य कर्म च यशो लोके द्वजवरोत्तम
Having destroyed actions and fame in the world, O best of twice-born,
नास्ति निन्दासमं पापं नास्ति मोहसमासवः
There is no sin equal to slander, nor any delusion like intoxication.
नास्ति रागसमः पाशो नास्ति सङ्गसमं विषम्
There is no snare like attachment, nor any poison like association.
जीर्णाङ्गोमनसस्तापाद् वृद्धभावादभूदसौ
Due to the affliction of old age in body and mind, he became aged.
स बाहुर्व्याधिना ग्रस्ते ममार मुनिसत्तम
That noble sage died when his arm was consumed by disease.
चिरं विलप्य बहुधा सहगन्तुं मनो दधे
After lamenting for a long time in many ways, she resolved in her mind to follow him.
समारोप्य तन्पूरुढं स्वयं समुपचक्रमे
Placing his body on the funeral pyre, she herself began the rites.
एतद्विज्ञातवान्सर्वं परमेण समाधिना
He knew all this through supreme meditation.
गतासूया महात्नानः पश्यन्तिज्ञान चक्षुषा
The great souls, free from envy, see with the eye of knowledge.
संप्रात्पस्तत्र साध्वी च यत्र बाहुप्रिया स्थिता
That virtuous woman also arrived there, where her beloved Bāhu was present.
प्रोवाच धर्ममूलानि वाक्यानि मुनिसत्तमः
The noble sage spoke words rooted in righteousness.
तवोदरे चक्रवर्ती शनुहन्ता हि तिष्टति
Within your womb abides a universal monarch, a slayer of enemies.
रजस्वला राजसुतेनारोहति चिन्ताशुभो
A woman in her period, mounting the pyre with the king’s son, is seized by anxious thoughts.
दाम्भिनोनिन्दकस्यापि भ्रूणघ्रस्य न निष्कृतिः
There is no expiation even for a hypocrite, a reviler, or a destroyer of the unborn.
विश्वासघातकस्यापि निष्कृतिर्नास्ति सुव्रते
O virtuous one, there is no expiation for a betrayer of trust either.
यदेतद्दुःखमुत्पन्नं तत्सर्वं शान्तिमेष्यति
All this sorrow that has arisen will surely come to peace.
विललापातिदुःखार्ता समुह्यधवपत्कुजौ
Overwhelmed by intense grief, she wailed, embracing her husband’s feet.
मारोदीराज ननये श्रियमग्र्ये गमिष्यसि
Do not weep, O queen; you will attain supreme prosperity.
तस्माच्छोकं परित्यज्य कुरु कालोचिता क्रि पाम्
Therefore, abandoning grief, perform the actions appropriate for the time.
दुर्वृत्ते वा सुवृत्ते वा मृत्योःसर्वत्रतुल्यता
Whether one is wicked or virtuous, death is the same for all.
नगरे वा तथामन्ये दैन्यमत्रातिरिच्यते
Whether in the city or elsewhere, misery here is excessive.
