आलंबनमनन्तस्य योगिनो ऽभ्यसतः स्मृतम्
The support for the infinite is remembered by the yogin who practices.
कुर्य्याञ्चित्तानुकारीणि प्रत्याहारपरायणः
One devoted to pratyāhāra should act in accordance with the mind.
इन्द्रियाणामवश्यैस्तैर्न योगी योगसाधकः
With senses uncontrolled, one is not a yogin nor a practitioner of yoga.
वशीकृतैस्ततः कुर्यात्स्थिरं चेतः शुभाश्रये
Once the senses are mastered, one should establish the mind firmly in an auspicious refuge.
यदाधारमशेषं तु हॄन्ति दोषसमुद्भवम्
Whatever is the complete support, it removes the arising of faults.
रूपं मूर्तममूर्तं च परं चापरमेव च
Form, both with and without shape, the supreme and the non-supreme as well.
ब्रह्माख्या कर्मसंज्ञा च तथा चैवोभयात्मिका
Known as Brahman, as action, and also as having both natures.
उभयात्मिका तथैवान्या त्रिविधा भावभावना
Likewise, another is of both natures; thus, contemplation is threefold.
कर्मभावनया चान्ये देवाद्याः स्थावराश्चराः
By contemplation of action, others—gods and so forth, immobile and mobile beings—exist.
अधिकारबोधयुक्तेषु विद्यते भावभावना
Contemplation exists in those endowed with understanding of their proper role.
विश्वमेतत्परं चान्यद्भेदभिन्नदृशां नृप
This entire universe is supreme, and also other, for those who see with distinction, O king.
वचसामात्मसंतोद्यं तज्ज्ञानं ब्रह्मसंज्ञितम्
Knowledge arising from the self through words is called knowledge of Brahman.
विश्वस्वरूपं वैरूप्यलक्षणं परमात्मनः
The form of the universe and its diversity are the characteristics of the Supreme Self.
ततः स्थूलं हरे रूपं चिन्त्यं यञ्चक्षुगोचरम्
Thereafter, one should contemplate the gross form of Hari, which is perceptible to the eye.
मरुतो वसवो रुद्रा भास्कारास्तारका ग्रहाः
The Maruts, Vasus, Rudras, the Sun, stars, and planets—
मनुष्याः पशवः शैलासमुद्राः सरितो द्रुमाः
Humans, animals, mountains, oceans, rivers, and trees—
प्रधानादिविशेषान्ताश्चेतनाञ्चेतनात्मकम्
From the primordial matter to the subtlest particulars, both conscious and unconscious beings—
मूर्त्तमेतद्धरे रूपं भावनात्रितयात्मकम्
All this is the embodied form of Hari, consisting of the threefold modes of existence.
परब्रह्मस्वरूपस्य विष्णोः शक्तिसमन्वितम्
It is endowed with the power of Viṣṇu, who is the very essence of the Supreme Brahman.
अविद्याकर्मसंज्ञान्या तृतीया शक्तिरिष्यते
A third power, known as ignorance and action, is also acknowledged.
असारभूते संसारे प्रोक्ता तत्र महामते
In this insubstantial world, O wise one, it is described as such.
तया तिरोहितत्वात्तु शक्तिः क्षेत्रज्ञ संज्ञिता
Because of being concealed by that power, it is called the field-knower (kṣetrajña).
अप्राणवत्सु खल्वल्पा स्थावरेषु ततो ऽधिका
In beings without life, it is indeed slight; in immovable beings, it is greater.
पतत्र्रिभ्यो मृगास्तेभ्यः स्वशक्त्या पशवो ऽधिकाः
Among birds and then among beasts, by its own power, animals are superior.
तेभ्यो ऽपि नागगन्धर्वयक्षाद्या देवता नृप
Even beyond them, O king, are nāgas, gandharvas, yakṣas, and other deities.
हिरण्यगर्भो ऽपि ततः पुंसः शक्त्युपलक्षितः
Then Hiraṇyagarbha too is recognized as endowed with this power among beings.
यतस्तच्छक्तियोगेन युक्तानि नभसा यथा
Because, by the union with that power, all things are sustained, just as by the sky.
अमृर्तं ब्रह्मणो रूपं यत्सदित्युच्यते बुधैः
The immortal form of Brahman, which the wise call 'sat' (being),
नहि स्वरूपरूपं वै रूपमन्यद्धरेर्महत्
Indeed, there is no other great form of Hari apart from his own essential form.
देवतिर्यङ्मनुष्यादिचेष्टावन्ति स्वलीलया
By his own play, he enacts the activities of gods, animals, and humans.
