तथात्मा प्रकृतेः संगादहंमानादिदूषितः
In the same way, the self, by contact with nature, is tainted by ego and other impurities.
तदेतत्कथितं बीजमविद्याया मया तव
Thus, I have explained to you the seed of ignorance.
क्लेशानां च क्षयकरं योगादन्यन्न विद्यते
Apart from yoga, there is nothing else that brings an end to afflictions.
खाण्डिक्यो ऽमृतवच्छ्रत्वा पुनराह तमीरयन्
Khāṇḍikya, like nectar, again spoke, inspiring him.
विज्ञातयो गशास्त्रार्थस्त्वमस्यां निमिसंततौ
You have understood the meaning of the scriptures in this brief moment.
यत्र स्थितो न च्यवते प्राप्य ब्रह्मलयं मुनिः
Where the sage, having attained absorption in Brahman, remains without falling away.
बन्धस्य विषयासंगि मुक्तेर्निर्विषयं तथा
Bondage is due to attachment to objects; liberation is free from objects.
चिन्तयेन्मुक्तये तेन ब्रह्मभूतं परेश्वरम्
For liberation, one should contemplate the Supreme Lord who has become Brahman.
विकार्यमात्मनः शक्त्या लोहमाकर्षको यथा
Just as iron is drawn by the power of a magnet, so too by the power of the self.
तस्या ब्रह्मणि संयोगो योग इत्यभिधीयते
The union of that self with Brahman is called yoga.
यस्य योगः स वै योगी मुमुक्षुरमिधीयते
He whose union is yoga is called a yogi, desiring liberation.
विनिष्यन्नसमाधिस्तु परब्रह्मोपलब्धिमान्
He who is established in samadhi attains realization of the Supreme Brahman.
जन्मान्तरैरभ्यसनान्मुक्तिः पूर्वस्य जायते
Liberation is attained from repeated practice across lifetimes.
प्राप्नोति योगी योगाग्निदग्धकर्मचयो ऽचिरात्
The yogi quickly attains union, his accumulated karma burned by the fire of yoga.
सेवेत योगी निष्कामो यिगितां स्वमनो नयन्
The yogi, free from desire, should practice, guiding his mind with discipline.
कुर्व्वीत ब्रह्मणि तथा परिस्मिन्प्रवणं मनः
He should direct his mind toward Brahman and the Supreme in this way.
विशिष्टफलदाः काम्या निष्कामानां विमुक्तिदाः
Desire-driven rituals grant superior results; for those without desire, they bestow liberation.
यमाख्यैर्नियमाख्यैश्च युञ्जीत नियतो यतिः
The disciplined ascetic should practice both what are called yamas and niyamas.
प्राणायामः स विज्ञेयः सबीजो ऽबीज एव च
Prāṇāyāma is to be understood as both with seed and without seed.
कुरुतः सद्विधानेन तृतीयः संयमात्तयोः
When performed properly, the third arises from the restraint of those two.
आलंबनमनन्तस्य योगिनो ऽभ्यसतः स्मृतम्
The support for the infinite is remembered by the yogin who practices.
कुर्य्याञ्चित्तानुकारीणि प्रत्याहारपरायणः
One devoted to pratyāhāra should act in accordance with the mind.
इन्द्रियाणामवश्यैस्तैर्न योगी योगसाधकः
With senses uncontrolled, one is not a yogin nor a practitioner of yoga.
वशीकृतैस्ततः कुर्यात्स्थिरं चेतः शुभाश्रये
Once the senses are mastered, one should establish the mind firmly in an auspicious refuge.
यदाधारमशेषं तु हॄन्ति दोषसमुद्भवम्
Whatever is the complete support, it removes the arising of faults.
रूपं मूर्तममूर्तं च परं चापरमेव च
Form, both with and without shape, the supreme and the non-supreme as well.
ब्रह्माख्या कर्मसंज्ञा च तथा चैवोभयात्मिका
Known as Brahman, as action, and also as having both natures.
उभयात्मिका तथैवान्या त्रिविधा भावभावना
Likewise, another is of both natures; thus, contemplation is threefold.
कर्मभावनया चान्ये देवाद्याः स्थावराश्चराः
By contemplation of action, others—gods and so forth, immobile and mobile beings—exist.
अधिकारबोधयुक्तेषु विद्यते भावभावना
Contemplation exists in those endowed with understanding of their proper role.
